The 2009 Division 2 Football thread - Or How I Still HATE Minnesota-Duluth!!

Re: The 2009 Division 2 Football thread - Or How I Still HATE Minnesota-Duluth!!

Slightly overlooked here, but UNO is going Bowling. Granted, its just to the Kanza Bowl in Topeka, KS, which pits the best team in the MIAA against the best team in the LSC, that both don't make the playoffs, but it does give you a few extra weeks to practice, and start figuring out things for next year's campaign. All in all, you're doing better than everybody else who's sitting at home with all of their gear turned in.

Any who, the playoff scores....

Fayetteville State 13
California (20) 42
- About what I expected here. The CIAA just ain't that good, and Cal has been to a few rodeo's before.

Edinboro 31
East Stroudsburg 16
- Special teams came up big for the Scots in this upset win.

West Alabama 24
Albany State (21) 22
- Was an intriguing match-up. Albany State was the second best program in the SIAC, and West Alabama only got into the playoffs with a shocking upset of North Alabama the week before, and from what I've seen of the math, it was DAMMN!! close to them still not making it in. If only Tuskegee participated in the playoffs... But I digress.

UNC Pembroke (15) 13
Arkansas Tech (22) 41
- Pembroke is still pretty much a start up program that's playing as a D2 independent and should be congratulated just on making it to the playoffs. The Wonder Boys of Tech still make short work of the Braves.

Abilene Christian (16) 24
Midwestern State (8) 21
-Another case of Special team paying off here.

Final OT
Hillsdale (13) 27
Minnesota State (10) 24
- A field goal in Overtime was the difference in this game. Guess we won't get to see the MSU-UMD Gridiron battle that a lot of NSIC fans wanted to see this year.

Saginaw Valley (9) 20
Nebraska-Kearney (6) 35
- A tale of two halves for Saginaw Valley. Controlled most of the first half, but didn't do much offensively in the second half, and the wheels came off the wagon in the 4th for the Cardinals.

Final OT2
Tarleton State (12) 57
Texas A&M-Kingsville (17) 56
- Nope, thats not a basketball score, thats a football score. More evidence that they don't play Defense down there in the LSC. Also of note, Tarleton State kicked a 64 yard field goal to force the first OT.

Re: The 2009 Division 2 Football thread - Or How I Still HATE Minnesota-Duluth!!

This weekends games.

12:00 pm

West Alabama At Carson-Newman (7)
- Its midnight Cinderella. West Alabama's luck runs out here when they go to Mossy Creek.

12:00 pm

Hillsdale (13) At Grand Valley (4)
- Hillsdale is the first conference team to beat GVSU since 2004. REVENGE!!! will be the order of the day here.

12:00 pm

California (20) At Shippensburg (18)
- Ship is the young upstart team that's new to the playoffs, while Cal is a lot more playoff seasoned. Ship beat Cal 42-35 in the PSAC championship game. Revenge, while most illogical, will be on the Vulcan's minds as well.
12:00 pm

Edinboro At West Liberty (11)
- We find out if West Liberty is legit or just the beneficiaries of playing in the weak WVIAC.

1:00 pm

Nebraska-Kearney (6) At Minnesota-Duluth (3)
- Antelopes don't roam this far north. Odim gets another chance to distance impress the Harlin Hill votes while Joique Bell of Wayne State is at home getting ready for the NFL draft.

1:00 pm

Arkansas Tech (22) At North Alabama (5)
- Terry Bowden takes the Lions of North Alabama into the playoffs and they look to have 4 home games in the playoffs. UNA won 42 - 17 earlier in the year when these two squads played.
1:00 pm

Abilene Christian (16) At Northwest Missouri (2)
- These two squads will have faced each other 4 times in 2 years this weekend, thanks to playoff runs and a home and home non-conference series of games. Quite the little rivalry they've developed in a hurry.

3:00 pm

Tarleton State (12) At Central Washington (1)
- The Texans of Tarleton take a long flight up to Washington to take on the last undefeated squad in Division 2. CWU is an early favorite to make it to the Championship game this year.

Re: The 2009 Division 2 Football thread - Or How I Still HATE Minnesota-Duluth!!

Nine Harlon Hill Finalists announced.

Its supposed to have been just 8, but apparently, there was some sort of tie in region 3 and Odim from UMD, Bell from Wayne State, and Iceik from Grand Valley State. Somehow there was a tie for second place apparently. Bell and Odim weren't that big of a surprise, but Iceik is. He's good, but he's just never quite had that Wow factor that Bell has, or that just try to stop him that Odim brings either. Bell and Odim are considered the favorites to win, but having Iceik there could really gum things up for either kid, as Iciek would split a lot of votes right now. Bell's considered the front-runner for it, and probably deserves it the most, but with his team out of the playoffs, he can only hope for somebody like Odim having less than pedestrian days.

I thought scores like that existed in NCAA '10

Nope, they're real, and the fallout/aftermath of threads about the games can be funny as hell!! :D Like Holy Cross over Minnesota funny. :D

Re: The 2009 Division 2 Football thread - Or How I Still HATE Minnesota-Duluth!!

Well, it looks like I'm all set to get to Duluth this saturday. Now it just becomes a question of how many Duluth fans will show up to the game and have a beer with me. ;) :D

Any idea how much tickets are for the UMD/Grand Valley game? I've looked on the UMD website and can't find any info on prices. Ticket office is closed today so unfortunately that's no help.

I ordered some earlier this week, and the reserved were $10 I think (or maybe $12 tops)

Any national tv for any of these games yet? Or do they just televise the championship game?

GV-UMD was one of the local stations in Duluth, along with Grand Rapids as well.

Kinda odd how they're broadcasting the semifinals next week. GVSU hosts Carson-Newman on ESPN at 3:30 and then Northwest Missouri State hosts California (PA) at 8:30 on CBS College Sports. Personally, even with as crappy as a job as ESPN can do with broadcasting a game they don't have any interests in broadcasting, (Lacrosse anyone?), more often than not, you're not going to find CBS college Sports on at the average sports bar.

Hats off to the Bulldogs there. They really do have something going on there. GVSU is going to have to start thinking of you guys in the same way we once thought about North Dakota. The team we gotta be better than to win a National Championship.

Re: The 2009 Division 2 Football thread - Or How I Still HATE Minnesota-Duluth!!

Woooo!!! Go Carson-Newman... East Tennessee represent :D

Re: The 2009 Division 2 Football thread - Or How I Still HATE Minnesota-Duluth!!

Why is GVSU hosting this game?

Well, GVSU has the overall record, and has the better facilities to broadcast the game from for ESPN. It was pretty likely that either UMD or GVSU would host CN if they won. Also, there is some speculation that ESPN wanted the game at GVSU so then they could send the crew that was doing the MAC Championship game on Friday at Ford Field to Allendale on Saturday.
