Re: The 112th Congress - A Congress divided shall not cry!

This whole thing falls apart when he exempts the firefighters and police officers. They're literally about the only people working in government that you *don't* want striking as a union and protecting their crappy workers.

Yeah, that's not an obvious effort to punish those who don't support your Republican party.

Wait, hold on. You say we don't want them striking. That's why they were exempted, so they don't strike. I don't get it?

Plus, guess who the largest police union in the state supported in November? (Hint: Not Walker.) Guess who the largest fire union in the state supported? (Hint: Again, not Walker). If it was an effort to punish those who didn't support him, why wouldn't he punish those who didn't support him?

But I agree with you in general I think. I totally would have included those unions in the bill as well. Can't win 'em all.

Re: The 112th Congress - A Congress divided shall not cry!

Right, but I'd argue, with your $6 billion deficit, that you certainly haven't quite hit upon that "right model".

TX has a multi-billion-dollar deficit as well, and it's got to be about diametrically opposite the MN model, so we certainly haven't quite hit upon that "right model" either. What, pray tell, is the right model?

I don't understand. How can Texas with all those low taxes have a deficit? They must be swimming in jobs.

Plus a tax hike that would make even Kepler blush.

I dunno. I'm pretty brazen when it comes to tax hikes. ;)

Oh, I don't know. I think both the low tax and the high(er) tax models can be successful if done properly. I wasn't trying to demean any states approach. Just saying things in Minnesota aren't as hunky dory as 5mn was painting them. He said all it required was a "moderate" tax hike. I don't know if you solve $6 billion in debt with a "moderate" hike.

Re: The 112th Congress - A Congress divided shall not cry!

The Assembly has convened in Wisconsin this morning, the Senate still short of a quorom.

In the Assembly, Dems (all wearing orange for some reason) are getting to make speeches and amendments. Some of the highlights:

Rep. Clark (D) has amendment to grant high school students who skipped class a civics credit toward their graduation
(Because these kids just scream civics credit).

Rep. Sinicki (D) rises to honors those in the MidEast who are watching the proceedings on Al Jazeera
Seriously.

Jesus...I don't have words for how stupid that is. Who the hell are these people?

Even with its relatively high taxes (including little tourism, oil or excess govt support), being 'fly over land' and having about the worst weather in the country...

The state has the number 1 city and 5 of the top 20 cities per quality of life this year, the best pop growth in the great lakes region...and the most Fortune 500 companies per capita in the country.

All governments need to find ways to cut their budget...but Minnesota has a relatively outstanding recipe for success.

A recipe that Tim Pawlenty tried to systematically destroy while he was in office. Now he wants to bring that erosion to the Federal level.

Re: The 112th Congress - A Congress divided shall not cry!

Meanwhile, in the US Congress, Jeff Flake talks about the $100 billion of cuts in the GOP budget:

We’re proposing $100 billion in cuts — kind of. It’s a little funny math. That’s a rounding error when it comes to the overall budget and deficit.

And they actually aren't proposing $100 billion in cuts.

From Congressman Ryan:
Pursuant to House Rules H.Res. 5 and spending reduction resolution H.Res. 38, the Budget Committee Chairman will file an allocation to set 2011 discretionary budget authority (BA) at $1,055 billion, which will produce savings of $74 billion compared to the President’s request.

Hmmm. Request?

However, there’s much less to this than meets the eye. Notice that Ryan is comparing his chosen budget baseline “to the President’s request.” However, President Obama’s 2011 budget request was never acted upon by Congress, which instead chose to enact a continuing resolution funding the government at the 2010 level. So Ryan’s $74 billion in cuts are, in reality, closer to $30-35 billion, since part of his savings come from cutting spending increases that were never made.

I can cut budgets that don't exist too. I'm not going to buy the Golden Gate Bridge. I just saved money!

Re: The 112th Congress - A Congress divided shall not cry!

New Tone?

House Republicans and Democrats started Friday morning's debate over whether to defund last year's healthcare law, and as part of this debate sparred over whether members should be allowed to call that law "ObamaCare."

After two House Republicans called it "ObamaCare," Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-Fla.) asked the chairman whether these "disparaging" remarks should be allowed on the House floor.

"That is a disparaging reference to the president of the United States; it is meant as a disparaging reference to the president of the United States, and it is clearly in violation of the House rules against that," she said.

And when all is said and done, who's proposing to spend more?

Meanwhile, Jesse Jackson has decided to grace Madison with his presence. Russ Feingold said to be coming in later this afternoon. It's like a regular rejected politicians convention down here.

I do believe you are having a "Bob Gray on immigration" moment. :)

With apologies to Stan Mack, this conversation guaranteed actually overheard in my (Virginia) office break room today:

"So what's with those big protests going on in Minnesota?"

"I didn't think it was Minnesota. It was Illinois or something."

"Whatever."
