This goes back to what I said earlier, either in this thread or the Obama thread:

Shared sacrifice.

Every single one of us is going to have to give something up. There can't be any sacred cows for this to work. However, you can't just unilaterally go after (insert your favorite group here). You want to take a hard line in dealing with the union? Want them to pay more for their benefits, fine. Those things can be negotiated. Unilaterally trying to bust the unions is not the answer.

So, say you ask them for that. They tell you to screw off. Both sides are firmly planted. What then?

Make sure their budget doesn't get touched, leave them alone, they're overworked and underpaid.

LOL

Watch out for the unintended consequences. Mark my words that if the right wins this round then the private sector will get even less than they do now in the market. Part of the reason private sector employees even get what they get is because private companies have to compete with the public sector. If that stops EVERYONE will have massive wage deflation.
