Terrible tragedy. I've been to that Safeway before.:(

Re: The 112th Congress - A Congress divided shall not cry!

NPR now reporting she has died.

Very tentative reports that the shooter called out names of his targets.

Seriously, what the hell?

One of the callers to the Service Employees International Union said, "I suggest you tell your people to calm down, act like American citizens, and stop trying to repress people's First Amendment rights... That, or you all are gonna come up against the Second Amendment.

And today she did.

Wikipedia showed that she died, but that was edited out before I even clicked the link. MSNBC and Reuters have reported that she and six others are dead.

Her last Tweet:

Rep_Giffords Gabrielle Giffords
My 1st Congress on Your Corner starts now. Please stop by to let me know what is on your mind or tweet me later.

Edit2: KOLD says her death is not confirmed.

Edit3: They say she is surgery. CNN and others report that she has passed away.

From Gawker:

We spoke to an eyewitness, Steven Rayle, who was on the scene at the time of the shooting and helped to hold the suspect down while waiting for police. Here's what he said:

The event was very informal: Gifford had set up a table outside the Safeway and about 20-30 people were gathered to talk to her. The gunman, who may have come from inside the Safeway, walked up and shot Gifford in the head first. According to Rayle, who is a former ER doctor, Gifford was able to move her hands after being shot.

After shooting Gifford, the gunman opened fire indiscriminately for a few seconds, firing 20-30 rounds and hitting a number of people, including a kid no older than 10 years old. Rayle hid behind a concrete pole and pretended to be dead. When the gunman apparently ran out of ammunition he attempted to flee, but a member of Gifford's staff tackled him. Rayle helped hold the gunman down while waiting for the sheriff to arrive, about 15-to-20 minutes later. The EMS came about 30 minutes later. Rayle said he was "stunned" by how long it took medical help to arrive.

The gunman was young, mid-to-late 20s, white, clean-shaven with short hair and wearing dark clothing and said nothing during the shooting or while being held down, although he struggled at first. He didn't look like a businessman, but more of a "fringe character," Rayle said. The sheriff's department arrived, arrested the gunman and cordoned off the parking lot.

15 minutes for law enforcement and 30 minutes for paramedics?! This isn't the middle of nowhere! Tucson's a fairly large city!

Re: The 112th Congress - A Congress divided shall not cry!

KOLD in Tucson just reported she's in surgery, but many other media outlets as well as KOLD from those other sources have reported she has died.

Re: The 112th Congress - A Congress divided shall not cry!

CNN and Fox reporting she has died. Terribly sad... :(

Re: The 112th Congress - A Congress divided shall not cry!

So... a news station attempting to learn the backstory behind a news story? That's shocking?

How is anything she did or did not do in any way relevant to someone shooting her in the head?

Re: The 112th Congress - A Congress divided shall not cry!

KOLD says someone at University Hospital says she is in surgery.

Well, there's a difference between relevant and justifying.

Not a thing in the world justifies it.

However, if you're looking for motiviations for the shooter, I'd say the things she did are quite relevant, wouldn't you think? Now, poor journalism to speculate about it so close to it happening? I'd probably agree. But the phrasing in your original post was over the top.

You are confusing relevancy with justification. It's completely relevant to the story and impossible to justify.

Oh I'm sorry. I remember now after Ronald Reagan was shot, Walter Cronkite asked what he had done to **** off John Hinckley. My bad.

CNN was asking the same questions and offering speculation as well. Don't pretend this is a right/left issue.

Oh yeah, Sarah Palin must have just bought a round for everyone. You're pathetic. Just as pathetic as Palin.

No one said that.

But perhaps this kind of overheated rhetoric is both counterproductive and potentially dangerous. Perhaps we'd all be better off if everyone took it down a notch.
