Thanks for the Memories (WARNING: Long)

Re: Thanks for the Memories (WARNING: Long)

Great post, Bob. :)

If you thought Agganis was nice...you should check out some of the arenas further west. ;)

Good luck to Mike in whatever his future after SLU holds!

Re: Thanks for the Memories (WARNING: Long)

good luck to Mike going forward, and I'll catch you on TSN on my directv during center ice games.

and thanks for sharing. ;)

Re: Thanks for the Memories (WARNING: Long)

Thank you for taking the time to post this as I am glad I took the time to read it.Probably the best post I have ever read on here. Thanks again.

Re: Thanks for the Memories (WARNING: Long)

Amen, Sir.

You've been one of my favorite hockey journalists through the years, as I've always appreciated the level-headed way you approach the sport and the fact you have always been more than willing to give college hockey it's due.

Excellent post, and as a longtime (but still fairly young) college hockey fan, you captured a lot of what makes this game so great. It's more than the sport itself, it's the people surrounding the sport, that make it such a huge and fulfilling part of our lives.

Re: Thanks for the Memories (WARNING: Long)

Thanks Bob... just steer them kids down south and mention us a few times on TV. I think that's all we can ask for. Clearly you've seen what we have to offer. I know there's a sharp NCAA/MJ divide on both sides of the border and hopefully this serves to ease some of those tensions because in the end, ideally, its about serving the best interest for these kids as much as it is producing high level junior/amateur hockey. I know these guys want to play hockey as long as possible and we can see that in the distances traveled and the costs paid... particular for non-scholarship athletes. I hope in general that this stands as a higher-profile tale of players taking the longer path by which they ensure their education and finding success. I would like to think your experience will resonate at some level to help the players (and future students) take the NCAA route.

Echoing some of the others. I certainly appreciate it and I hope I can say that "we" appreciate it when you and your media/analyst brethren get down to the personal level on these boards. I'm certainly glad that we have sincere folks like yourself involved in this game and I'm glad you've enjoyed your ride via your son. Your input will certainly be valued around here and hopefully you don't become a stranger to these circles.

All that being said... when will we get you on Canadian National TV in a SLU jersey? ;)

Re: Thanks for the Memories (WARNING: Long)

Bob:

You are the world's most respected hockey journalist for a reason - your hockey intellect, insight, connections and judgement are by-products of your passion and experience in application. But what really sets you apart is more intangible -- your heart - a love of the game that is best exemplified by seeing the game through the eyes of your son and sharing that journey with the rest of us through your many media outlets, including this message board.

Without sounding like a sycophant, your 'thank you' is a testament to the game itself, and why we all love it. We find in hockey a family, an escape, opportunity, camraderie, history, tradition, culture and most of all - community. Thanks for being part of our community - we hope to see you around as much as you'd like to be here!

Re: Thanks for the Memories (WARNING: Long)

This is exactly why SLU fans are so proud of our program, win or lose. It's all about people: good kids, good students, good families, and a great education. Nobody's perfect, but in the long run our team and our university have their priorities straight and their focus right where it ought to be. We think St. Lawrence is a pretty special place because of it.

For Saints fans, it's nice to read an essay like this one because it epitomizes everything we all love about our own team and our own school. But it's equally nice to be reminded that there are lots of other great people having wonderful experiences at other schools all over the country because of college hockey.

Re: Thanks for the Memories (WARNING: Long)

Beautiful post Bob, very poetic. We can see how fortunate you felt to be a part of a great program, and the glimmer of sadness that you feel now that it's over. Having graduated from Cornell 18 years ago and Michigan 13 years ago, the passion still remains.........I'll bet you find your way to a few SLU games and stay in touch as best you can.

Best of luck to your son at Albany, I hope it works out for him.

Re: Thanks for the Memories (WARNING: Long)

Let me just say, as a person who likes to dallop in flame wars here and there :D, this was a great change of pace.

Great post, thank you so much for sharing you experiences, thoughts, opinions, proving us wrong and just being one of the "guys" on this board....because if you didn't know that really makes me and I'm sure many others, feel special that someone so well known and respectly wants to just chat and talk with us simple "fans."

I seriously hope you continue to drop by the forum (even if it be once or twice a year) because you make this place just that much more fun, because of your great insights, thoughts and experiences.

Thanks, Bob. Goodluck you your son, Mike. And please don't be a stranger.

Re: Thanks for the Memories (WARNING: Long)

Wow - just did a double take when I saw that Bob has made only 99 posts on this forum. Has any other user ever contributed so much in so few posts?

It is a true pleasure to have you on the forum, Bob, and many of us share a tiny piece of your sadness that your involvement in college hockey may wane a little bit in the future. Thank you for sharing your insights and expertise with us these past 4 years!

TimU, Bob's post is exactly why I said it was great to play you guys over the years (as a UVM alum and current fan). SLU = Great teams, great coach. Class all the way around.

Re: Thanks for the Memories (WARNING: Long)

Bob, what a great post!

Your colleagues at TSN must have seen your pride and delight at your son's college hockey career. It certainly is a different perspective from the reporter and analyst. College hockey is a family of devoted players, families, coaches, fans, alums. And you showed us the paricipation and pride of the players' families.

The best to both you and your son

Re: Thanks for the Memories (WARNING: Long)

As they like to say when one minute remains in the period ... THANK YOU!!!

Wonderful post and all the best to you and your family.

Re: Thanks for the Memories (WARNING: Long)

That's one of the best posts I have ever read on this board. I just can't add anything else, other than to say, GOD, I love this game.:)

Having just read Bob's post a fourth time (and I will read it many more times because it's incredible), I echo your comments. We are lucky that Mike decided to play college hockey. He and his family will be missed.

I thought it was "And Clarkson still sucks!"

??:p ;)
Clarkson Hockey -- nowhere to go but up!!!

We could have had him, but another bad decision in the recruiting department.

I go through what Bob went through next March. I can't be as eloquent, but it's going to hurt just as much!!!
