Men's Final:
#1 Rafa Nadal vs #2 Novak Djokovich

Re: Tennis anyone?

Sharapova is having a very hard time holding her serve, and it's going to cost her the final.

Re: Tennis anyone?

Wow, that was one of the more impressive performances I've seen in a while. First GS final, at Wimbledon, up against a three-time GS champ, and she was just unflappable. Got broken a couple times in that second set and I figured we'd see a Novatna-style breakdown. But she simply broke back each time. Very impressive.

And the muted, respectful celebration was a throwback to 25 years ago, when players won Grand Slams and didn't feel the need to re-create a number from A Chorus Line on the court following match point. (Yes, players used to just pump their fists, look to their box, and shake hands at the net. See Lendl, Evert, et al.)

Re: Tennis anyone?

Yeah, he rolled right through the 3rd.

Djokovic serving for the championship.

Re: Tennis anyone?

Djokovic is #1 now. Then again, he would have achieved that ranking regardless of today's outcome.

Wimbledon's U.S. TV coverage moves into 21st century

Wimbledon's U.S. TV coverage moves into 21st century

In some ways it’s sad to see NBC lose this signature sporting event, but it’s good to see tape-delayed sports coverage becoming a thing of the past.

Simultaneous coverage on ESPN and ESPN2 from the second Monday through Wednesday is a very, very good thing as well.

ESPN will broadcast Wimbledon from start to finish beginning with next year's tournament, the network and the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club announced Tuesday. The agreement will run for 12 years.

In acquiring the U.S. television rights, ESPN will present the tournament, including the men's and women's singles finals, across a variety of platforms -- and all of the coverage will be shown live.

Matches will air on ESPN and ESPN2 simultaneously the second Monday through Wednesday. This will allow for expanded coverage of the fourth round and live telecasts of all quarterfinals.

ESPN will televise the semifinals and finals; ESPN on ABC will broadcast a three-hour highlights show on the middle Sunday of the tournament, and will re-air the finals on a same-day basis at 3 p.m. ET.

ESPN2 has covered the early rounds of the tournament, plus one each of the men's and women's semifinals, since 2003. Matches also will be available on ESPN3.com and the Watch ESPN mobile app. There also will be selected delayed coverage on ABC on weekend afternoons.

"We are proud to have been a partner of The All England Club the past nine years and are thrilled to be given continuing responsibility for honoring Wimbledon's rich tradition," George Bodenheimer, president, ESPN and ABC Sports, said. "Over the next 12 years, we'll work closely together to move coverage of this great event forward with live coverage on television and using all the latest technologies and screens."

Sports Business Journal reported the decision Sunday, following the men's final. NBC issued a statement saying: "While we would have liked to have continued our relationship, we were simply outbid."

The deal officially was signed Tuesday. Through 2023, the television schedule will increase to more than 140 hours, including full live national coverage of the semifinals and finals. ESPN3.com's schedule will expand to 750 hours, also with the semifinals and finals presented live.

"We are delighted to be extending our partnership with ESPN, in a move which will consolidate our U.S. media rights under the auspices of a single partner," Ian Ritchie, chief executive of The All England Lawn Tennis Club, said in a statement. "This new agreement will bring increased live coverage of The Championships and ensure that the huge international audience for Wimbledon can now enjoy all the drama and colour of the fortnight through a sustained narrative delivered with clarity, continuity and consistency across a wide range of platforms."

NBC covered Wimbledon for 43 years. It has televised the men's and women's finals live for the past 32 years, but the network was criticized for tape-delaying some coverage of the quarterfinals and semifinals.

Re: Tennis anyone?

I hope DirecTV will still be able to carry the live feeds of ITV coverage. I like being able to watch a match from start to finish, without a bunch of commercials and inane studio banter. I also like watching matches even if some analyst in Bristol thinks I should be watching ESPN's favorites.

Re: Tennis anyone?

It's getting late in this tourney and I hadn't noticed any discussion. I may have missed something. Bryans escaped from 5-2 down in the final-set tiebreak tonight. Azarenka-Clijsters going on now.

Re: Tennis anyone?

Djokovic just defeated Murray in a grueling five-setter and will face Nadal early Sunday morning.

Sharapova-Azarenka is the women's final early tomorrow.

Re: Tennis anyone?

ESPN was determined to make Novak's girlfriend a star (not that there's anything wrong with that)

Re: Tennis anyone?

Djokovic prevails in a 5 set classic against Nadal.

When Nadal trailed 3-4 / 0-40 in the 4th, I figured he was done - but he fought back, forced a tie-breaker, won that, and led through the 5th set until Djokovic broke him at 5-all.

It actually felt like Nadal would win in the 5th because Djokovic's legs looked dead.

Also, this was the longest major final ever in the open era at 5hrs 53min per ESPN2.

Re: Tennis anyone?

If you aren't watching Barty v Kvitová you're doing it wrong. Fantastic match so far. Multiple 20+ rally points, two consecutive games that went 16 points each. Barty just won the first set 8-6 in the tiebreak after falling behind 1-3 and saving a set point at 5-6. The first set was a 69 minute marathon. Ash Barty is #1 in the world and seeking to be the first Australian woman in the semis of the Australian Open since 1984.

I wasn't able to watch past the 3rd set, but Sandgren put up a hell of a fight it looks like.

Seven match points, including up 3-6 in the fourth set tiebreak and Federer saved them all. It was a walk over in the fifth. Sandgren had nothing left. Federer should have lost in the round of 16. He was down 8-4 in the fifth set tiebreak and then won six consecutive points.

"McCoco" finally lost to the 2 seeds. Don't know anything about McNally, but Coco Gauff is the future of the game. She might be the #1 player in the world before she graduates high school. We're all failures in comparison. :D
