Yesterday Djokovic announced he had been granted a special exemption to play in the Aussie Open since he isn’t vaccinated.

Overnight the Australian government channeled their inner Lee Corso and said “not so fast, my friend.” While on the flight to Australia the government found that his visa application selected a visa type that does not apply to those who have received Covid exemptions.

Now there appears to be a fight between different agencies on if he can get in with a sponsorship for his visa, or if he’s even allowed in at all.

I have no knowledge about this but from being married to a guvvy for 20 years I bet I know what happened, because it's happened here. This is pure internecine warfare among bureaucrats -- some are process driven and some are in the way of a VIP blowtorch. I gotta say, the former category are the toughest and most stubborn people on the planet. If we ever really need a to hold a strategic hill, fuck the Marines, send a couple of GS 12 logistics officers. If you innocuously screwed up you won't get what you want but they'll be nice. But there aren't enough gods in the heavens to save you if you're deliberately trying to break the rules.

I hope he’s denied entry, he’s such a twat

I'm reflexively appalled by ignorant anti-vaxxers. I'm happy that he's likely bounced from this event due to his idiotic stance on the issue.

But, he's an amazing talent... Only *slightly* arguably the GOAT, and the Open will suffer via his absence.

Thought I read that Australians are pretty by and large pissed about lockdowns that they've had for months here and there where they haven't seen family for eons and rich ****ers like Novak getting free passes everywhere. Thus free political points by revoking his entrance.

Joker now says he’s exempt because he got Covid in mid December.

so…given that he didn’t know he would get Covid, and he knew the vax rules- did he not plan on playing? Or did he just plan on getting an exemption somehow and getting a posotive pcr test was the key.

i feel like his chances of winning just went up even though I hope he has to swim home tomorrow

Djokovic vs Nadal, #1 vs #5, defending champ vs the King of Clay, and it's relegated to Peacock.

Plus most of the tournament has been stuck on Tennis Channel.

The French Open is the redheaded stepchild of the tennis majors.

It takes place at a real bad time for sports both in the US and in Europe. US has NBA and NHL playoffs and Europe has the end of the soccer seasons with all the title races, relegation playoffs, and cup finals (plus the EuroLeague basketball finals and the IIHF World Championships).

Too bad, too. Nadal came back from 5-2 in the fourth set to win 7-6 and take the match. Would’ve been nice to have it on NBC or flex to USA.

Nadal to the final after a retirement by Zverev due to a nasty ankle injury.

If the match had gone the distance it would’ve had a chance to set the non-Isner/Mahut record for match length. They were at 3:13 and still in the second set tiebreak.

Tsistipas launches a ball into the crowd, Kyrgios (rightfully) asks to see the supervisor as to why Tsistipas wasn't defaulted.

People on the internet: "Kyrgios is a terrible whiner!"

(In fairness, they're both being a-holes right now)

Nadal onto the quarters to keep the calendar slam alive.

He’ll take on Fritz next, the last American in the men’s singles. Only one American too on the women’s side with Anisimova.

Serena announces she’s retiring after the US Open.

A long shot, but if she wins she’d tie the grand slam record, tie the grand slam final record, and break the grand slam quarter final record.

Serena, Lewis, and Tiger will all be gone in a few years. Rich white people breath a sigh of relief.
