Technology (Not Science)

There are numbers between 8 and 11.
What? You have to be shi—ing me!

My greater concern is that my computer is so old that it lacks the absolute to update web browsers. When trying to update Chrome, Edge, or Firefox, my computer fails with an alert that the computer lacks the processing power to complete the updates. And it turns out that many sites, especially those I need, require browsers updated to version X.x in order for pages to load correctly.

The last time I bought a personal laptop, in hindsight I probably should've bought a Surface Pro. I ended up with a custom Sager with way more Nvidia GPU than I need these days, because at the time MS Flightsim 2020 had been announced and I had thought I was going to get back into playing that. 5 years later, it sits installed and is never played. I should've just started putting that money towards an actual pilot's license.

They're dropping a new version next year. Logged a ton of hours in it via XBox SeriesX and Game Pass Ultimate.

Oh for Christ sakes

my new laptop (which is a touch screen) has green squiggly lines all over pics and videos. I just opened it yesterday

looks like I’m going to micro center in the morning

Now I have a Lenovo slim. More storage space and better processor for $300 less.

the surface screen was hosed out of the box and they had no more left in store, so it was get something else or wait a month

The new PCs my company issues us are Lenovo. We’ve had way too many issues with the last two rounds of HPs.

Only had one major issue with HP's zbook lineup since I started using them about 12 years ago. Still not sure if that was a mobo issue or an HP dock issue.

Over the weekend I installed Ubuntu on a Virtual Box on my Windows PC. Everything works perfectly. I am over the moon. Now to blow the dust off my shell skills and learn Python.

After making Amy first personal laptop purchase in about 12 years or so. Waiting in the cashier line at Microcenter is a very pungent experience. So much weed.

I just bought a Lenovo IdeaPad 5. It has the hybrid laptop/touchscreen, which my wife wanted. I don’t see the need for the touchscreen, but I just went with it.

I'm in need of advice here...

My parents (75 years old) are seeking out a technology upgrade... They are on a desktop (Mom) that is about 12 years old and a laptop (Dad) that is 7 years old, both Windows. Both systems are facing the end of support/updates and both of my parents have grown sick of Windows in general. They realize/accept that a step is needed here.

Overall neither one is super keen on everything becoming "digital". But they realize that paying bills via checks is becoming more of a hindrance and they are sort of realizing that many of their "security" concerns are outdated and don't necessarily apply (big factor was sitting down and showing them how I am paperless with all my bills, utilities, etc.).

So I'm thinking this is a good time to make a jump over to Apple for them. Currently thinking MacBook Air for my Mom and a iPad Pro for my Dad. I like the idea that they can connect my Mom's phone and the new pieces under one account and have them all linked together. This seems like a super easy way to share things amongst them.

The other concern is that my Dad is currently starting to show some signs of slipping mentally. He's currently the one who manages all their retirement accounts, banking, etc. They share all the decisions and discussions on this. My Mom just doesn't have specific log-in info to Fidelity or wherever else they have their stuff managed. So as far as Usernames & Passwords, the Password Management system is a key selling point here in the case of a "sudden" event. My Mom or Dad would have access to everything if needed.

Just kind of seeing if anyone else has taken this step with senior friends/family and how they have (gently) brought them onboard with current technology. Neither parent is digitally incompetent. They are just lagging behind about 2 generations of tech.

Thoughts/comments/concerns?

The only think I can say is that in terms of ease of use, Apple is a strong choice. Add in their security measures, even better.

I would 100% recommend making either an entire switch to apple or stay with windows/android, because having to use both tends to be more frustrating for all involved as they try to use a windows command on an apple product or vice versa.

Some of it depends on how willing they are to learn, though. My parents have a windows computer that's going on a decade old at this point, and they can generally do stuff by rote memorization on it (everytime something changes they freak out - they are also extremely non-tech savvy). They've switched to Apple phones (and my mom has an apple tablet) and they can do ok on them but often have questions I can't answer (because I'm an android user) and when I tell them to ask my brother and his wife (because they're apple users), I don't think that happens because I'm supposed to be the tech support person in the family.

We moved my mom to an iPad and it works for her needs.

My dad has always been a tech wiz and moving to apple might actually kill him.
