  • The USCHO Fan Forum has migrated to a new plaform, xenForo. Most of the function of the forum should work in familiar ways. Please note that you can switch between light and dark modes by clicking on the gear icon in the upper right of the main menu bar. We are hoping that this new platform will prove to be faster and more reliable. Please feel free to explore its features.

Technology (Not Science)

AI generated video has gone from "too many fingers, weird artifacting, weird clipping in motion," to "uncanny valley" awfully quickly.

There was a thread of videos generated by AI and if you had showed me any of them without telling me they were AI, I would have MAYBE been able to recognize one of them immediately. The others I might have picked out with enough time.

This is really bad in every sense. We’ve used visual evidence, especially video, as a sort of hard truth for as long as we’ve been sentient. We as animals and society are not prepared for how bad things will break when we can’t trust what we see.

This shit desperately needs regulation and I really don’t know how to stop it. Especially galling is the deepfake porn. That kind of shit should have really serious penalties.

turkish air 787 on final at dtw.jpg

Took 4 years, but finally spotted a Turkish 787 on final to DTW from my backyard about an hour ago. Depending on winds aloft, our house is often near the final approach path for Rwys 21L/R and 22L/R. I am about 15 miles out from DTW as the crow flies, so I'm WAGing that this plane was 5-6 miles direct-line from my vantage point.

Why is this sorta-grainy pic in the technology thread? Because I captured it on a whim using my Galaxy S24 Ultra's 10MP telephoto camera on 30x zoom. I had assumed it was a Delta A330neo coming back from Europe, until I managed to grab this closer look. I was pleasantly surprised by image quality good enough to make out the tail insignia from that far out. Now obviously, if I had a DLSR with a $1500+ telescopic lens and some much better photography skills, I'm sure I could've had a much better quality shot. ;)
