Technology (Not Science)

CrowdStrike is a security ops endpoint management platform. Its agent software is installed on your local machine and reports back to a central host server. Monitoring/spying is one of its functions, yes. It continuously monitors your computer for and responds to "threats", whether that is scanning files for malware, or blocking you from accessing websites that your company doesn't want you visiting from your work computer, or preventing you from plugging in a thumb drive to install malware and/or make off with proprietary info. It can also be leveraged by your organization's Sec Ops team for logging and responding to security incidents.

Luckily I was able to overcome the issue very quickly, but right now I can't use my banking app for instance.

Thanks for the background.

Given that it's basically Security, it makes sense why my technology ignorant self never really came around and learned anything on it.

FWIW, we had this at my company for many years (never knew if it was CS or not, but they filtered pages), and USCHO.com and the forums were never blocked or even questioned. Somehow this board was real competitive research. :)

When did Apple decide to become just like every other tech giant and become so very difficult?

It used to be that iTunes would manage everything for your iphone on a computer. That's no longer done. You have to have an app for music and then an app to manage the device. And now that they are new, all of the old downloads go away, and you have to start over.

Apple used to be so very simple and intuitive, but now it seems that it's pushing you to use their cloud for everything. And that music should be via their subscriptions. As if they don't make enough money selling people new iphones every few years because they become obsolete and unsupported so very quickly (let alone them sabotaging them to reduce the performance).

People used to complain about car obsolescence, but the average age of a car is over 11 years old now, and that's with ~15-20M new cars sold every single year. I could not imagine my '73 and '99 cars being like computers. Neither existed when the iphone first came out, and they are up to how many? And they still work. Can't say that for my apple devices. Or any of my computers.

I am very confused by this. Are you talking about old mp3s on your computer?

No, new ones. I just got a new one yesterday.

I want to have a copy that is more safe than just putting it on my phone, so I download it here, and then put it on my phone. But now it's super complicated to put things on your computer to on your phone.

Why download any music and not just leave it in the cloud?

It wasn't in the cloud in the first place. It was a different site that I needed to download it from. Second, what about the CD's that I would need to download (my entire library isn't ripped). And third- I totally don't trust "the cloud" as a storage for my stuff. What if the whole cloudstrike debacle covered that, too? Or that someone decided to pull the plug where your stuff is stored?

IMHO, the cloud is a terrible idea for my storage. For many reasons.

Why?

Also just get Spotify. I dl 1,000 or more cds in 2013 and haven't played any of it for years outside a handful of times.

Spotify doesn’t have the two albums I got as a membership. While I don’t listen to the cd s themselves, I listen to them all of the time on my phone.

And you don’t get Spotify/amazon music/pandora when you don’t have service.

Make your own cloud storage?

I have put a lot of faith into Google for photos and documents, but even I'm thinking of how to make my own cloud backups.

You need to get out more. There are many places where they are remote enough that you have almost no service.

And unless I have the drives in my possession, I don’t really control them. So my computer is where I download/upload stuff. Don’t trust any of the tech with my stuff.

You don't even need to get that remote. When I drive between Rochester and Watkins Glen, I hit some dead spots. I know because if I'm listening to iHeart radio, it cuts out during those parts.

I meant out of Chicago. Get aparch back to the UP, LOL. I have so very many holes in service in the UP, it's not even funny. We like listening to jazz while eating, and normally it's pandora/spotify/amazon music- but the requirements of service increase from left to right. And plenty of times I have to use what's on my phone.

Which really makes relying on some random server wherever in the world less than useful.

I just spent a week 20 minutes east of Spooner, WI and had no service. The cabin had Wi-Fi, but it didn’t reach far.

Im not complaining, btw. Being unreachable out on the lake was great.

You can dl from Spotify to your device. I do it with podcasts, audio books and I have just enough music for the very rare situations when I don't have service. Plus I have a thumb drive in my car with over 1,000 songs on it.
