Syracuse Women Ice Hockey

Re: Syracuse Women Ice Hockey

Typically one cannot transfer more than 2-years worth of credits (ie, half the credits required for a degree regardless of length of time) to the school from which one intends to graduate, for obvious reasons -- not sure if that applied in your son's case or not. That's potentially a different issue from courses, typically introductory/survey in nature, taken during one's first year being transferrable or not.

Not saying it's impossible; maybe it's an issue between US schools and Canadian ones. If it's two US schools it seems a bit dubious on the surface. Obviously, there's more to the story than I know (and should know).

In my son's case he was transferring from a school in Wisconsin to a school on the east coast, and was going to be a Junior, but because all of his credits didn't transfer, he was basically a sophomore again. College English was definitely a class that did not transfer and he had to petition to clep out of retaking a class he had already passed with an A as a freshman in the first school. Both schools are recognized schools with solid academics, so to the point, yes, it is possible for all credits to not transfer between schools…reasons why vary I am sure, but in our sons case, it really made no sense.

Re: Syracuse Women Ice Hockey

I can see credits not transferring…our son was a first semester Junior when he transferred and lost almost a whole years worth of credits, even though many of those classes were A's and B's, including College english and advance foreign language. He had to petition to CLEP out of repeating freshman english at his new university. He petitioned to have many of his credits reinstated without any luck. So it does happen and we got to be on the hook for another year of college because of it

While I am sad that this happened to your son, I'm glad my D isn't the only one this has happened to. It's not "shenigans" or "bull****" or whatever other name one comes up with for this unfortunate situation, but it does happen for a number of different reasons, not necessarily poor grades...and it sucks.

Re: Syracuse Women Ice Hockey

What about students who attend graduate school back in Canada after they get their BA in the States? Have you heard of many students having problems with credit this way?

I have known several who were educated in US schools go on to take various grad degrees in Canada. I guess it's up to the school you apply to whether they wish to recognize your undergrad qualifications...and how they decide to upgrade or downgrade the marks on your transcript as input to that particular admission decision. I don't really know much about that. But since MBA degree programs proliferate back home(and are a huge profit centre for most universities), there's probably not much to worry about...someone will happily take your money to enrol, regardless of where your undergrad is from.

Re: Syracuse Women Ice Hockey

Same reason as the other two players who have tranferred already ..... only they know why nobody else does....

Re: Syracuse Women Ice Hockey

Is to me or does it seem like there are lot more kids that transfer these days than before? I don't know if it's the culture where if the kid doesn't get ice time or whatever else, that their first thought is to jump ship and start over somewhere else, but I thought the whole reason these girls should be going to school is for the education. It just seems like there are more and more transfers these days and as a parent, I find it disappointing. Unless there are major, major extenuating circumstances, I would expect my daughter to stick it out and become a stronger person and if the hockey is not going well, then she should be there for the education aspect first. Again, I could be way off base but it's a trend that I've noticed not just at the D1 level but the DIII level and I'm just wondering if I haven't been paying attention or something has changed within the hockey realm. I am old :)

In my view, you are correct on all accounts. "Ya gotta win" is the theme. Most of these kid's and their parents are used to it. :)

It's not always the student's choice. Sometimes coaches take away scholarships (db pf, for example) for reasons other than performance or grades and the student has no other option but to transfer, even if that is not their preference. Some kids can pull a GPA suffice for an AD's honor roll, finish up in the top 10 for points and scoring, and the coach can do whatever he desires and tell that student...bummer...transfer....and so that's what the kid does...not by choice....

Yes, I agree pucko. I'd be curious to know how the women's D1/D3 transfers compare to the men's. In regards to the high number of women's transfers, in my opinion, I think it's because NCAA/CIS hockey is their nhl. After college or university, for most of the players their careers are done. I think for those that put hockey first, they are going to transfer to a school to get more ice time, better chance to win, etc....

At any rate, I would certainly tell my kid to stick it out and complete his/her degree.

Yes of course.... so in the case of Syracuse, the transers were both? Player's decison and coach's decison?

Not sure of the current students transferring, but in my D's case, it was purely the coach's decision.

Re: Syracuse Women Ice Hockey

SU plays like the Flyers of the 1970s... To quote their coach, "she's our enforcer out there" . Really? Hahaha.

Re: Syracuse Women Ice Hockey

it seems to me the coaches can not recruit or develope how many players are leaving this year? after talking to girls who play u-19 they are telling me no one wants to play there. this team had to go to overtime to beat l.u.there are d-3 teams that beat l.u. does that mean those d-3 teams can beat s.u.

The top echelon of D-III teams...IE: Norwich, Middlebury, Amherst, RIT, Plattsburgh, Elmira etc. would hold their own against the lower level D-I teams more often that not.

Re: Syracuse Women Ice Hockey

I don't have a horse in this race but ...

One week ago, SU was down by 1 against #2 Cornell going into the third period with shots on goal 19 to 16. Two weeks ago SU ties #4 Mercyhurst. I'm not sure SU is ready to be relegated to the ECAC West.

IMO, a family should think long and hard before passing on a $50K scholarship to a great school.

First post and it's bashing the SU program...hmm, I'd forgotten why I stopped visiting this thread.
