Sweet Release: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread Part I

If it's true that the assistants are gone, then good. The assistants are responsible for player development and lately on at least on the offensive side we've been a black hole for talent.

Re: Sweet Release: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread Part I

No one actually has a source. This entire conversation started because JSR heard from someone that it happened.

I'm not putting much stock in any of it until I see an article or headline that says it happened.

Ah, I know FM has wanted Mikesch gone all season so I thought he might have got his wish

Shirtless and I have talked about this at some point too. I agree with the decision to can Mikesch, if it did in fact happen. I would be a little disappointed if Tok is gone as well, but with not knowing what is going on behind the scenes I won't complain.

Re: Sweet Release: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread Part I

Not during the regular season, that is why it is weird that those teams fold like that. Especially when Gwoz and tBird led teams have gone out and won before at that level (well, tBird has at least gotten to the frozen 4). At least Wisconsin didn't forget how to win, now they'll probably win it all. Not sure how I feel about that. Much better than Michigan, I guess.

Michigan played horrible the majority of the year. The last month was unbelievable. The fact that they finally pulled their act together and looked like the best team in the country, only to kind of get screwed in the end was heartbreaking.

But they did a lot better then anybody was expecting based on their performance during the regular season, not to mention a lot better then the Basketball and football teams. I think if it was any other school people would be appreciative just for how far they went.

But of course it's Michigan, and losing is just hard at Michigan.

I've said the same about Batty for awhile now, I honestly think he could be quite a good coach, he has the fire, he was what motivated the 06-07 team for sure, he has been made captain of every team he has ever been on and he even coached a game for his team after Tech when their head coach was suspended for a game, I really think he could do it.

My other thought is the Tech grad that is teh coach in St, Louis right now, I believe he is an interim coach and Tech could possibly try and lure him back to his alma matter. The other choice is U of M's coach in waiting, who knows when Red Berenson will retire so if Tech offered the coach in waiting, a Tech grad, a job now he may take it. These are all obviously pretty much million to 1 shots, but hey, that's still better than our chances of a National Championship.

Getting Mel Pearson from Michigan would be huge. That would be an instant shot for recruiting, since he would bring strong ties to the US development team and a lot of programs downstate. More importantly he brings a new relationship with U of M, which may even include a NC series or two which would be kind of big in terms of recruiting also.

Most importantly he may even go for it. Especially considering that we can convince him that he can take the job at Tech and still decide to take over for Red when ever he retires.

Who wants to start the e-mail campaign.

melvinp@umich.edu

He's sold on the state. It's a matter of a job. ;)

I hear there's a job opening up broadcasting Gopher games.

Mel Pearson is not coming back to MTU. He is the Michigan Coach whenever Red retires which is probably sooner than later. Ron Rolston might come but I don't see that either. Davis Payne probably isn't going back to the College ranks...sorry guys.

Re: Sweet Release: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread Part I

It's very frustrating to see a school that doesn't offer athletic scholarships (RIT) can be so much more successful than one that does (MTU). I'm sure the RIT players are getting some academic aid, but that just makes Tech's staff look completely incompetent. How is the staff missing out on these guys? They are paying to go to a school to play hockey, while the recruits Tech's staff has brought in just don't cut it. It's a very sad state that the Tech hockey program is currently in. And the excuses that Houghton is too remote and the school is too hard is a bunch of bull. It was out of the way in the glory days as well, but they were able to bring in "players" then.

Your first 2 posts don't give me much hope for you being a decent poster. Ever.

Maybe we should complain about all the great players the Ivy league schools have too huh? They don't get athletic scholarships either. Why doesn't MTU have Arcobello, Kearney, Greening, Gallagher, Estoclet, Buvinow, etc. To compare a 2 game run by school from the AHA to season long struggle in the WCHA is laughable. Granted RIT still has a chance to win it all by going through Denver, New Hampshire, Wisconsin and either Miami or Boston College, they haven't yet and even if they do it still doesn't mean they would have finished higher than MTU through the meat grinder that is the WCHA.

I'm almost sure Red is heading out the door within the next 5 years. Which makes taking a job at Tech just to go back to Michigan absolutely pointless. But it's a good thought, if somebody had it like 5 years ago.

Which brings me back to an idea I had about a year ago. Hire Batty as an assistant coach. Between Jamie and Batty this team would play better I am almost sure of it. Now somebody just needs to convince Batty that this is the best career move for him.

If I'm not mistaken, I was told that Mel Pearson wouldn't think of returning after Rick Yeo chose Watters.

If Tech finds themselves in a really bad spot, they can always hire me. I know absolutely nothing about developing talent. But I'm sure I can find ways to manipulate and motivate the players to play their life and/or pride depends on it.
