Re: Sweet Release: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread Part I

Hey, when do we find out about this senior class award stuff? I can't find any info on when they award it.

Re: Sweet Release: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread Part I

Heard both assistants are gone. If so it's not enough as it's to little to late. They need a clean sweep.

If true I don't see why. I would place more blame on the head coach, we seem to be able to get players that showed talent prior to coming to Tech, it is our inability to keep developing that talent that's the problem and I think that is the head coaches fault. Also, where did you hear this news? Just wondering as there's nothing on
Tech's site about it.

Also, I just don't get what happened from 06-07 to now. That year we honestly had the best conditioned and hardest working team in the WCHA if not the country. We watched them beat teams like Denver, North Dakota, Wisconsin and Colorado College that year, all great teams yet we played harder and skated longer. Not much has changed since that season, the assistants are the same, the strength and conditioning is the same, everything is the same yet the team looks tired and lifeless half the time. I honestly think that coach of the year award that went to Russell that year should have gone to Batty, I think he was the number 1 reason for that teams success, his drive, his energy and his balls out attitude did more for the team than Jamie Russell has done sadly.

I don't know about that. The talent level is just not there to compete in the WCHA, primarily offensive skill to score some goals. I can't believe we can't even recruit one NHL draft pick to come play here.

If this is true I question what kind of assistants we can hire if they see that Jamie probably has one year to prove himself, even though he has 2 years left on his contract.

Re: Sweet Release: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread Part I

Tok seemed like he had a good nose for recruits, shame he had to go along with Mikesch. Forced out or left for greener pastures?

.

I agree about Tok, and Bangen better be gone, the team has lacked so much conditioning the past 2 years that its sad.

We have gotten a lot of players that were at the top or close to the top in scoring in their previous leagues, guys like Lickteig, Schooley, or Gwilliam and St. Louis, yet they come here and sit the bench or at best score ~10 goals a season. I know we don't have any NHL draft picks, but other schools do more with the same, like UAA or Mankato, they are close to our level but have been much more successful. I honestly don't know what can be done but something has to be tried.

Re: Sweet Release: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread Part I

BPH and I discussed this idea:

Make a Godfather offer to Mike Batovanja to be an assistant coach, with the promise of advancement. Get him a new trainer and a good recruiter (kick Tok here?) After Russell's contract runs out, kick him upstairs a la Culhane and make Batty the head coach. Give McKay his old assistant job back and sign someone on as a second assistant (Bunger?)

There are a few standout things about Tech that make it tough for recruiting.

1. Academics. It's a tough school, from all that I've heard. Yes, other schools like the Ivies/etc also are tough on academics, but they might have a bit more "name recognition" since the students who go to these schools probably figure on getting a degree, rather than an NHL contract, for the most part.

2. Location. The UP is quite desolate, and there is a noted lack of media coverage. Not to sound like I'm high on my horse or anything, but MN doesn't send out a crew there too often when we play at Tech, and I'd say 75% or more of our games are televised. That's saying something. It's closer than DU/CC, and we send crews there. Some students don't want/can't handle that type of setting.

3. Various little things. High gap between male/female populace. They're college kids. And guess what? They like the night life. Now, I love the DT/etc as much as the next person, but I also would like a non-sausage party, to put it bluntly. ;)

The city isn't a big city. This kind of ties into Point 2, but even Bemidji is close to some larger cities. Houghton has Marquette, I guess, but after that? Isn't it 3+ hours at the least for another city that size or so? And knowing smaller cities (even college towns), there is an "outsider" sort of thing going on in most of them.

4. Finally, and this is more a result of the first 3 points, and is contributed to by the larger schools (since they can afford it), the recent history of Tech hockey. Sure, someone may be a top liner at Tech, but who's gonna notice when the team keeps losing? I bet more than a few players would rather take a spot on the 2nd/3rd line at a Michigan/MN/DU/WI/BC/BU/etc and have a better shot at winning that NHL lottery.

Way too little coaching experience with that plan. You're saying that Batty would be the head coach in 2 years, when he has no experience coaching at all at this level. I don't like that idea. Hiring Batty as an assistant might not be a bad idea (though I'd like it better if he had some assistant experience at the USHL level first), but the head coaching job in 2 years, no way.

Figured that, just made sense with Russell's contract.

How long would it take?

First of all, Batty has to decide to start coaching and stop playing. I believe that he is still playing in some minor pro league, but I don't remember for sure. Then I'd say 2-3 years as an assistant at the USHL level and I think that he could be given a shot at Tech as an assistant. I still wouldn't put it out of the question that he'd be given a shot as an assistant at Tech without the USHL experience, especially if Jamie is still head coach.

So I guess we'd just have to resign Jamie and grin and bear it for a few more years.

If Batty's going the wrong way and knows it, he may welcome that Godfather offer.

Personally, I still think that Jamie can turn the program around. He had it going in the right direction, he needs to figure out what worked then and get back to it.

This. You guys made it to the F5 recently, and had high hopes for that next season.

Plus, with all these early departures for the NHL due to the max salary.....there's more of a chance to succeed than ever. See: BSU, RIT, UNH, etc.

Last year seemed to be a fluke. This year's "upsets" made a lot of people take notice. If it happens again next year....that's a trend, folks.

Re: Sweet Release: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread Part I

This thread is mostly about hockey. Am I missing something? Or are Tech threads opposite of all other threads?

:p

Someone needs to figure out why dominant teams like Denver and North Dakota just fold when they get to the NCAA's now. A week earlier, North Dakota would have hung 7 on Ylae.
