Sweet Release: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread Part I

Re: Sweet Release: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread Part I

Someone needs to figure out why dominant teams like Denver and North Dakota just fold when they get to the NCAA's now. A week earlier, North Dakota would have hung 7 on Ylae.
Obviously the WCHA just sucks...

Denver, I don't get at all. Cheverie just collapsed in the F5, and didn't look that sharp (despite only giving up 2) against RIT.

UND had injury troubles (and suspension troubles) all year. I think they surprised even their own fans at the end with that strong finish.

Usually, UND just has to worry about BC. I think next year, they will be a force to be reckoned with.

As for MTU, given your defensive rep, and with the younger goalies you have, all you need is to able to score a couple goals, and I could see a 7th-8th place finish easily. Yeah, it's not home-ice for the F5, but it's a start.

Not during the regular season, that is why it is weird that those teams fold like that. Especially when Gwoz and tBird led teams have gone out and won before at that level (well, tBird has at least gotten to the frozen 4). At least Wisconsin didn't forget how to win, now they'll probably win it all. Not sure how I feel about that. Much better than Michigan, I guess.

Re: Sweet Release: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread Part I

So I guess we'd just have to resign Jamie and grin and bear it for a few more years.

If Batty's going the wrong way and knows it, he may welcome that Godfather offer.
Personally, I still think that Jamie can turn the program around. He had it going in the right direction, he needs to figure out what worked then and get back to it.

I don't think Tech has the money for a top-flight or even midlevel coach in two years, so Jamie may get the nod because he'll work cheap. He'd be better served by pulling a couple miracles out of his arse though, otherwise he'll be out and some other new guy (probably a non-Techie) will be in for a shift. As for Batty, he'll either come back in 2-3 years as an assistant under Jamie, or 15 years as head coach or heir apparent.

While I understand the predicament you guys are in (love the coach, but dang, we want wins; see also: tDon), I could see taking a chance on an unknown, because it can't get much worse, can it?

Re: Sweet Release: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread Part I

BPH and I discussed this idea:

Make a Godfather offer to Mike Batovanja to be an assistant coach, with the promise of advancement. Get him a new trainer and a good recruiter (kick Tok here?) After Russell's contract runs out, kick him upstairs a la Culhane and make Batty the head coach. Give McKay his old assistant job back and sign someone on as a second assistant (Bunger?)

I've said the same about Batty for awhile now, I honestly think he could be quite a good coach, he has the fire, he was what motivated the 06-07 team for sure, he has been made captain of every team he has ever been on and he even coached a game for his team after Tech when their head coach was suspended for a game, I really think he could do it.

My other thought is the Tech grad that is teh coach in St, Louis right now, I believe he is an interim coach and Tech could possibly try and lure him back to his alma matter. The other choice is U of M's coach in waiting, who knows when Red Berenson will retire so if Tech offered the coach in waiting, a Tech grad, a job now he may take it. These are all obviously pretty much million to 1 shots, but hey, that's still better than our chances of a National Championship.

Herein lies the rub. Where is the line of "it can't get worse if we hire a new coach?"

We realize that the revolving door of coaching is part of the reason we're in this mess. This has led us to believe it's worth keeping Jamie just because he's probably done better than most other coaches in his situation could have done.

Letting Jamie go means another four or so years for certain in the cellar while we rebuild the recruiting network, install new systems, etc. Keeping Jamie is a sure thing...but how big is that sure thing?

It's like choosing between the bankroll with a $100 bill on the outside in Monty Hall's hand or Curtain #1. Inside the bankroll could be more hundreds...or singles. Behind the curtain could be a '78 Chrysler LeBaron...or 2000 pounds of cheddar cheese. The sure thing is not so sure.

Exactly. Recruiting is a vicious circle. You have a couple good years? Recruiting is easier, and it feeds itself. Same if you have a couple bad years. You can't recruit worth crap.

I have a feeling Jamie has until the end of his contract. Fair or not, that means no buyout/etc, and win or lose, it gives the school an excuse to renew the contract/get a new coach, depending.

That seems to be the prevailing wisdom, as Tech, much like the state of Michigan, is broke. We won't be able to afford eating Jamie's contract.

I wish Tech had the money to lure a coach away from a big school or even someone like Scott Owens or Bob Motzko, they have sone well at smaller schools, I am sure they could at least get Tech's program to be a middle of the pack WCHA team.

I think Tech's best shot, which could also kill them in the long run due to the lure of more money/bigger school, is to get lucky on a wunderkind of a coach that is completely unknown/rookie to coaching.

Agreed, but like you said, we would probably only have him here 4-6 seasons before he moved onto greener pastures at a larger school. I think a good example of that is Brian Kelly, he started at GVSU, won a few championships there, went to CMU, got the team decent, got hired at Cincy to replace Dantonio, has a few good years then ends up at one of the biggest jobs in college sports, the head coach at Notre Dame. The sad thing is I would see a wunderkind coach using Tech as their CMU/Cincy.

Too. Much. Tech. Hockey. Talk... I cannot repel hockey talk of that magnitude!

This is what we're discussing regarding former player Mike Batovanja. Batty was arguably the "heart" guy of that 2006-07 team that went to the F5. He was all over the ice, sacrificing his body, and he was able to fire up the team when they were down. That, more than anything, is what Tech needs out of a potential coach.

Isn't that what Tech as going for, in hiring Jamie though? It just hasn't worked out that way.

I'll trust ya, since obviously you guys know more about your history than I do. I learn something new everytime we have hockey day at Shirtless'/bbdl's. :o

And maybe someone like that will be happy where he's at, like the Serratores, etc. and never leave.

As has been mentioned, it's not only who is currently there, it's who's out there that could be better that you can actually get?

Yes and no, since he had coached for a while as a Cornell assistant. This was an obvious next step for him, though it would have been nice if he'd had an assistant job in the WCHA or a head coaching job in USHL.
