Re: Sweet Release: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread Part I

Also as is somewhat usual, Cal lost to Cranbrook in the state tournament. Look them up if you don't know them. They supply way more than their share of D1 players.
Yeah, I scrimmaged them a once on their campus when I played D1 and they still beat us.

Re: Sweet Release: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread Part I

Anyone want to start a petition that the MTU Pep Band should be the official band of the 2010 Frozen Four? It's going to need some good ole fashioned rowdiness to compete with the Tigers' opening weekend crowds.

Re: Sweet Release: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread Part I

UPDATE: Mikael Lickteig says he doesn't actually hate the Huskies Pep Band, he just joined his friend's group.

We say he needs better friends. :p

Yes I am chatting with him about it...
Can't argue with that assessment...I'd love to see him and Stoner get more ice time

In other news, I think MTU is looking for one more defenseman for 2010, here is my list of likely candidates (All from BCHL)
Jared Eng
Garrett Noonan
Peter MacIntosh
Sean Robertson
Adam Hout
Bo Dolan

I would expect to hear something in the next few weeks.
I was wrong, the player in question wasn't even on my list. It doesn't matter anyway since he committed elsewhere. :(

Re: Sweet Release: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread Part I

If he wants to be taken seriously he should get out of DIII Michigan hockey. Seriously. Try to get into the USHL or BCHL or ANYTHING else.

More like if Tech wants him to take them serious they should get a new coach. Seriously. With State, and the Peterborough Petes already expressing interest prior to his sophomore year, I highly doubt he's too concerned about Tech taking him seriously.

Does this university conduct exit interviews with the players? When you can't get his former players to vouch for him, how in the **** are you going to convince future players to come? Who do they think they are fooling with this act? It's absurdity! Five out of seven seasons of 8 wins or less, the last two a combined total of 11 wins! If there isn't a change, the current administration obviously completely don't give a **** about MTU Hockey. And if they don't care the slim support is going to get a lot slimmer. Not making a drastic change at this point will put the program lower than the depths that Watters brought it to.

I would honestly think the biggest reason Russell won't be fired is because there is over $200k left on his contract and MTU can't afford to eat that. You want to pay for the buyout?

Are Escanaba and Cadillac supposed to be good? :p

No. Not by any measure. My senior year of HS, our hockey team had a season like you guys just had, but we still lit up Cadillac like a freaking Christmas tree.

I got to pick up at least one NCAA Trophy during my college career...

His two years are less than what some of these coaches make a year. This program can't afford not to buy him out in my opinion. I sure hope they are looking at all possible options including requesting permission to use the hockey fund to pay him off.

Does this quote sound familiar from recently fired Ohio State Coach John Markell:

“I love the character of the team,” Markell said. “I liked the way we bounced back. We were resilient. I really liked our second half. I thought we really matured as a team and were finally reaping the benefits of having a mature goaltender, solid goaltending, scoring goals. We were good on specialty teams. We were competing very, very hard. We always reacted the right way.”

Re: Sweet Release: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread Part I

The band gonna be there at the FF?
That is a big no. They were not invited this year, my guess is because of money. The only bands will be UMN, UND, and UMD and one of the last two named will not be around after the play-in game. Potentially the championship game could even be held without ANY pep bands.

No badgers because of the Basketball tournament?

This happened in 2005 (DU/CC) and was one of the driving reasons behind inviting us in the first place

Re: Sweet Release: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread Part I

I'm thinking Tech needs to take a serious look at Ben Johnson from Calumet.
And no, I'm not just saying that because I went to the same school as him.

I posted that in another thread. I think your right. Looks like he has alot of raw hockey talent, nose for the puck, plus speed. I believe he is only a sophomore. Watched him play against downstate Cranbrook, even the downstate announcers were commenting about him. Plus if he signed on at Tech some of those rabid Calumet hockey fans would come down to the Mac to see him play. (Might help in filling the place). Maybe Crawford could come along with him. He's always had a winning program up there and they skate hard for him.:D
