Re: Sweet Release: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread Part I

First team all-state for Division 1 in 2010, Honorable Mention for Division 1 in 2009...not bad
Best player (I'm assuming) from the 95th ranked team in the country. Not too bad. Somewhat equivalent to Totino Grace, Duluth Marshall, St. Cloud Tech, St. Cloud Cathedral, Chaska and Hibbing were this year. Not good, but he could develop into a decent player.

edit: still ranked higher than St. Francis and Mr. Benik :p
Also ranked higher than Delano, for those that know that reference.

speaking Delano...It lists Calumet as 162...on par with Delano, Mounds-Westonka, and New Prague...

That is probably about right, that is the group where Calumet should fit into.

edit: does anyone know if this Detroit Catholic Central school plays anyone decent out-of-state? or is their ranking inflated by pounding on MI schools? They're ranked pretty high, and I haven't heard much of them.

Its in my signature line...I hate to say it but I agree with the bold part...I might even say it has to be closer to 2007-2008 season for him to keep his job.

This is setting up very similar to the 1999-2000 -> 2000-2001 seasons.

Russell managed one more win and one more tie in 2 less games than Watters did in 99-2000. If Russell doesn't get off to a good start, he is probably gone before GLI.

I definitely agree that the closer the team gets to fifteen wins, as well as the closer they are to being .500 going into the GLI, the better for Russell's job security. Making the championship game at the GLI would also help.

Since the Pep isn't going to be at the Final Five, they should send them there to St. Joseph, Missouri. Emporia is the closest team to St. Joseph, and they would be a Home Court Advantage there in Missery.

The pep band is going to Missouri, it was pretty much scheduled after winter break. Suzanne said if the team makes it that far, will you be willing to travel? And of course the pep band said yes.

The pep band also went to Missouri my freshman year (2007-2008) for the 2008 Elite Eight, (They may have also gone last year) and I was with them, and it was quite a fun road trip even though we lost in the first game.

Also according the email from the Pep Band Director, the band will stay for as long as the team is winning. Which means the band could potentially miss every day of class next week. (University sanctioned absences of course) Apparently they're leaving Sunday night or monday morning and coming back as late as Saturday

DCC played Culver Academy in Indiana twice and Won 4-2, Tied 4-4...looks like they only lost once this season to Trenton?

Culver has 2 kids on Heisenberg 2011 list, so thats not too bad. I'm still unconvinced that they or the NJ team that is high would be able to keep it within 3-4 goals against Minnetonka, Edina, Hill-Murray or even Eden Prairie and Breck.

Culver sucked this year though...so I don't know...Minnetonka barely kept it within 3-4 goals against Edina you know ;) I bet the NJ school and DCC could keep up and make a good run at state if they played a metro schedule all year long...

I don't profess to know a lot about MHSAA hockey, but I'm generally aware that Trenton and DCC are usually pretty good. Minnesota's best teams would probably beat either of them 8 or 9 times out of 10, but I doubt they'd be outclassed.

Detroit Catholic Central is a goliath in MHSAA. I only played them once but they crushed us, being that we sucked that year. But yeah, they still wouldn't have a chance against a top 5 or even 10 AA Minnesota team. A funny quote from an ex-Hill Murray player about the issue was something very close to:

"We played a Michigan team once and kicked their *** but ****, you don't fight with them, that's all Michigan teams like to do and they will kill you."

Minnesota high school hockey is very much focused on speed and skill, not as much on fighting and more physical play, especially up north. So I can see where that quote would ring true. Its funny that the quote came from a Hill-Murray player, since just a couple years ago when Roseau was the defending champs, undefeated, ranked #1 came down to the big city, they met Hill and Hill just hit the crap out of them (especially Ness) and it completely took Roseau out of the game. Hill went on to win it all, now 2 of their players from that team are Tech commits.

The MDHL All-Star team that played in the Elite League tournament had five Catholic Central kids on it, and the Minnesota team with Holl, Prochno, Hesketh, Gardiner from Minnetonka, and Fulton and Morin from Breck, along with some other top players from around the Twin Cities needed a little hometown officiating to beat them by a goal.

But they won. ;)

It also had Sturos ;)

Re: Sweet Release: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread Part I

On another topic, I think we should use this ranking system for NCAA tourney selection instead of the PWR or Krach. :D

http://www.ushsho.com/d1mrank.htm

WCHA - 6
CCHA - 5
CHA - 2
ECAC - 1
HE - 1
AH - 1

13 "west" teams
3 "east" teams (and Air Force could still get the AH autobid)

Re: Sweet Release: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread Part I

So, the Foopers floor hockey team (me, PB, Flashy, Yager, Boosh, rmk, and various others) played a crazy game yesterday. Started out up 1-0, down 5-1 with 5 to go (sound familiar?), but then we did what Tech couldn't do, came back and won 6-5. The real kicker? 4 of the 5 PK goals were scored by BUNGERRRRRRR!!!!

Ohhh... he told me Bungerrrrrrr was playing hockey with his team, he never mentioned it was a floor hockey team. (Then again, he also never mentioned he was playing floor hockey...) Now it makes a bit more sense.

From Chris Heisenberg's list: Reid Sturos-F 3/14/10 Brighton HS 8-8-92

I wonder if he's related to my old roommates... they're one of those crazy Finnish "banger" families so there's a solid possibility.
