Sweet Release: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread Part I

Re: Sweet Release: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread Part I

Some of my friends told me that Carmelita's South opened this winter in the Pearl Street Mall, though I didn't look too carefully when I was up there last weekend. The original is still open in Calumet.

Yup. The old BK would be gold - McDonalds or another location in downtown, silver. :o I've heard that the City doesn't want a restaurant near Franklin Square for some reason, but I don't know if that's fact or just speculation.
You'd think anything would be better than an old abandoned BK building.

While the BK location is much better, I liked the setup of the McDonalds better. It wasn't so cookie-cutter like the BK was. It is still well located, between the DT and the Dog/KBC.

You have a point, though it's not easily handicap-accessible. Then again, neither is Houghton. :o Unfortunately, I'm forever creeped out by that building, ever since it was a combination magic shop and naughty lingerie business.

Luckily, because that was McD's for so many years when I was younger, I still have that picture in my mind.

Better crack than the clap. ;)

Border Grill is tasty stuff, and I'd love to have one in Ho-ton. I can't see it helping Carmelita's South though, even though they're aiming for somewhat different price points and dining styles.

Carmelita's South was OK. I'd like to go there again once they're a bit more set up, or try the original Carmelita's.

BG is amazing. I don't go there that often, but it is freaking good.

Original Carmelita's is absolute deliciousness.
BG is also absolute deliciousness.

On a lighter note, Derek Kitti scored the game-winning goal for the Calumet Wolverines in the GLHL championship game this weekend.

He also has a hat trick in the game before.

Meh... I played in that league for two seasons with Mosinee. There were some talented players, but also way too many guys who thought Slap Shot was their life story and if they just got in one more fight, the pro scouts would jump out of the stands and sign them to a pro contract. Rule #1 in the GLHL - You better have your head up because if you don't there's a good chance your going to wake up later that evening in the locker room wondering what truck hit you.

There were a few Tech washouts playing for Calumet and Portage Lake (Storm, Moilanen, Van Tassel, etc) when I was in the league as well. But it was always the running joke to line up across from them during a face off (knowing full well who they were) and see a Tech helmet or a pair of Tech gloves and ask them:
"Hey did you go to Michigan Tech?"
"Yeah, so what?"
"Oh yeah really, me too... but stayed when times got tough and actually graduated."

A few times that ended with a stick in the back of the ankle... fun times.

PS After watching BSU last year, and RIT this year make their runs to the FF, I'm starting to question my theory that there is more glory in simply being a member of the premier league in NCAA hockey vs some mild success (or luck) every few years as a member a crap league . Discuss...

It's true. Carmelita's is really excellent for being so far away from, you know, Mexico. :o

Seriously - it's one of the best Mexican restaurants I've ever eaten at, and there's a large and very good Mexican restaurant community in the Twin Cities.

Sure, but Kitti isn't a Tech washout - he did actually graduate and had a respectable senior season for a guy who isn't much of a scorer in a serious league like the WCHA.

Re: Sweet Release: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread Part I

ST approves of the non-hockey talk that was brought up in this thread. :D

Carry on.

Re: Sweet Release: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread Part I

I love Pizza Works. And Carmelita's. We won't be getting any of the big chains anytime soon - not enough population. What I'd really really really like to see in Houghton is a Tim Horton's. Don't see that happening though.

So Tok is gone? is that confirmed?

Re: Sweet Release: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread Part I

For a spring hockey fix, the Gibson Cup is tons of fun to watch.
There's also a ton of history in these teams. PL being the descendant of the first pro hockey team, and the Cup being the 3rd oldest trophy behind Stanley and McNaughton. It's worth watching every year.

Re: Sweet Release: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread Part I

So, any confirmation of whether Tok and Mikesch are gone?

If they are gone, I doubt it is by the school's choice. I could see them appying for head coaching jobs, everyone wants to advance their career. As someone else mentioned, why can the assistant coaches when the head coach might lose his job in a couple years and a new guy would want his own staff.

One thing I didn't comment on earlier - the fact that Jamie replied in such detail to a letter from a fan should tell you all you need to know about his feelings for the program. Everyone talks about getting some high profile coach and that's great. But if it happens, you can kiss any support from the head coach goodbye for things like the Misfits and other "distractions" that don't directly relate to the team in their opinion. Houghton enjoys a small-town relationship with the team and the current coaching staff, especially with Mikesch being a local. Do you think those big name coaches that everyone wants Tech to hire will give two-hoots about the fans and would give small town attention to little things like that? I doubt it.

Would you be willing to trade a 20 win season for a coach that looks down his nose at you as a supporter of the program and is too busy to care about anything other than the team? Be careful what you wish for, you just might get it and you might be less than pleased with the results. Just as a trial run, email another "top coach" in the WCHA and see what, if anything, you hear back from them.

I can't argue with that at all. As far as Jamie taking the time, he really is great. I typically talk to him for about a half hour over the phone or in person every few months. He actually typically asks me how life is going and I know he means it. He is great with answering my questions and being honest with me about situations, sometimes things that I can't really write on here. The things he has done for Mitch's Misfits since its creation and the passion he has for MTU hockey make any change difficult for me. I honestly feel that if he can't turn it around, this program is in dire straits. I know he is capable of bringing the program back to respectability. I just hope he shows everyone else that he can quickly or it will be too late. The last few years have been a huge challenge with the injuries and recruits lost to the AHL/WHL. I have high hopes for some of the incoming players and I know most of them come from winning programs so it shouldn't be too hard to get the all rolling.

Re: Sweet Release: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread Part I

That's too bad. He's probably pretty much screwed now since he skipped a couple weeks of school and isn't playing.

I know a good number of the business faculty. I suspect he knew the odds and has been staying on top of things remotely. Even if he did have to scratch this semester, he'll have little trouble figuring out a way to finish that MBA.

Hopefully, I just know that for grad level degrees the requirements are a little more stringent.
