Sweet Release: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread Part I

Re: Sweet Release: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread Part I

Wendy's is OK, but BK is 15 minutes up the road for your sober driver. Just ask for your burger "off the broiler", and you have the same drunk food at a cheaper price. Houghton does not need a Wendy's.

The summer I worked full-time for Ford, I had a great time eating at the places downtown. They needed my money more than McDonald's and Subway did.

Victoria's Kitchen... mmmmm...

Re: Sweet Release: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread Part I

Olive Garden has the best food for eating in your mouth. Opening one in Houghton is a high priority.
Also Wendy's is much superior in every way to Hardees, Donald Maki's, BK etc. Sorry about the elderly yooper joke. You had to be there when McD's was first invented to appreciate it.

I'm still peeved that BK shut down the Houghton branch just because the broiler broke - it had to have had great patronage. It was only open until 2002, so most of our current posters wouldn't have remembered it (though they probably know where it was.)

Victoria's Kitchen... mmmmm...

.

(though I've had inconsistent service there, with some meals being great and fast, and other being not so great with less-than-clean dishware. The Suomi is much more consistent and good in its own right.)

What can you guys tell me about Dennis Rix?

Our most promising forward for next season, which means one or more of the following will occur:

1. A random pro team will wave a contract in his face and promise that they'll have him playing in the NHL by the end of the year. He'll sign and spend the next five years in the ECHL.

2. He'll flunk out his first semester

3. He'll be injured four games into the season

4. He'll contract a MRSA infection at Marquette General and die

5. Halfway through the season he'll decide that Tech isn't for him and transfer to another school

6. He'll actually have a good freshman year, putting up about 15 points, but he'll never live up to the hype or expectations in the following years.

Re: Sweet Release: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread Part I

You're all wrong. Houghton needs a burrito place, doesn't have to be a chain like Chipotle, but serve the same kind of food. A Chipotle style restaurant would not fail in Houghton, especially if it was put near campus.

A Border Grill in Houghton?

Or Qdoba?

Border Grill is more likely, since I can't see Chipotle or Qdoba expanding into our little corner of the globe. Come to think of it, they'd be an excellent tenant of the old Burger King building across from the Franklin Square Inn.

I don't know what Border Grill is, but a Qdoba or Chipotle kind of place is what I'm thinking of. We have a really good local one in Minneapolis with a couple locations, called Burrito Loco. There is a location in Dinkytown that has a restaurant with huge burritos downstairs and a bar upstairs.

It's a local Chipotle/Qdoba in MQT.

I liked Victoria's, but I was more of a Lunchbag fan. That guy makes ridiculously good soups.

Border Grill's essentially like a Qdoba or a Baja Sol Tortilla Grill (which is the local equivalent in MSP.) Same sort of quality as a Chipotle or Qdoba, but a larger menu than Chipotle - fairly comparable to Qdoba - and with only three locations in MQT and Negaunee.

F2B&G: I only ate at the Lunchbag once or twice, which is a damm shame since I lived next door. Everyone says it's a good eatery though.

Better crack than the clap. ;)

Border Grill is tasty stuff, and I'd love to have one in Ho-ton. I can't see it helping Carmelita's South though, even though they're aiming for somewhat different price points and dining styles.

Re: Sweet Release: Michigan Tech Offseason Thread Part I

It's next to the KBC. :D The guy is gonna make a freaking killing if he stays open late enough.
The hours in Calumet are:

Mon - Thurs:
3:00 pm - 10:00 pm
Fri - Sat:
3:00 pm - 11:00 pm
Sun:
3:00 pm - 10:00 pm

If I had to guess, I'd say that he'll be open at least an hour later than those, if not more on Friday & Saturday.

Carmelita's South? I thought Carmelita's was in Calumet, are they opening one in Houghton too?

Gotcha. Thats basically what I was thinking, and putting between the University/Frats and the bars, in the old Burger King location and staying open until about 3:00 would be a damm goldmine. The old downtown McDonalds might work too, I've always liked that location.

Some of my friends told me that Carmelita's South opened this winter in the Pearl Street Mall, though I didn't look too carefully when I was up there last weekend. The original is still open in Calumet.

Yup. The old BK would be gold - McDonalds or another location in downtown, silver. :o I've heard that the City doesn't want a restaurant near Franklin Square for some reason, but I don't know if that's fact or just speculation.
