Sunyac 21-22

Plattsburgh alumni Nick Jensen '14 makes Denmark's first-ever Olympic squad as a defenseman. He was mostly a forward at Plattsburgh until the change of position his senior season.

Actually I believe it was between his Sophomore and Junior season he went from PT Forward/Defense to Full time Defense. He came to Plattsburgh having playing the year before on Defense for Bismark in the NAHL and Denmark U20's team in 08/09. He was on of those Hybrid players that we have seen being recruited to come to Plattsburgh (Ryan Hogg and Jack Ring have played both F and D in their Careers)

Final scores:
Oswego - 3, Potsdam - 0
Plattsburgh - 5, Cortland - 2
Fredonia - 5, Buffalo State - 1 (key result for last playoff spot)
Brockport - 7, Canton - 2 (still in third)

So Russell, Cortland, real or faux?

It does make you wonder if they are coming back down to earth.

When I watched Cortland play Nazareth and then saw Brockport play the next day, I was more impressed with Brockport. But then Cortland played so well against Utica the day after that, and I started to wonder who was really the upstart team.

Brockport's offense sure has been clicking this year. Looking forward to the next Brockport-Cortland matchup.

Potsdam might give them a game tonight, Green played well and kept it close. Of course against the anemic Oswego offense maybe thats a stretch. Sink or swim time for Red Dragons.

So Russell, why doesn't the SUNYAC sponsor Women's Hockey? The NEWL is all SUNY teams as is.

I'm not Russell but my understanding is that the SUNYAC doesn't want to have Canton and Morrisville in their conference because they aren't the same caliber of an institution as the current members. But without them, there is no AQ to the tournament. And since conferences are not keen on sponsoring a sport without an AQ they don't offer women's hockey.

Thanks for clarifying not Russell!

But not all SUNYAC teams. Big difference. There are plenty of D3 SUNY schools, most of them downstate, who are not members of the SUNYAC.

Morrisville is not a full time member of the SUNYAC. They are only an affiliate member in just two sports — men's hockey and field hockey. They would have to apply individually for each sport to become an affiliate member in that sport. As it is, many don’t like any affiliate members at all. So the likelihood of adding more affiliate membership is very slim.

Canton is not a member in any capacity. They have applied for full time membership more than once. And have been voted down each time. The reasons are … shall we say … complicated. Ergo, their chances of gaining affiliate membership in just some sports is slimmer that Morrisville's additional chances.

Remember, Morrisville was a full time member at one time (along with SUNYIT). But both schools pulled out voluntarily.

However, when Morrisville pulled out, they were in a bind when it came to men's hockey and field hockey, because those sports had no home to the conference they were joining. Plus, the SUNYAC needed Morrisville’s field hockey team to keep their number at seven for the AQ. (They didn’t need the men's hockey team.). Thus, at the time, the bylaws were changed to allow those sports in as affiliate members.

Since then, attitudes have changed. And now that an AQ only needs six teams, it will be very interesting to see what happens to Morrisville’s two affiliate member teams.
