Sun Devil Hockey

ASU has had a scheduling arrangement with B10 for several years so it is possible they could arrange to be the common non-conference foe for one year if the B10 goes to a conference only schedule. However, with budget cuts most B10 teams would prefer to schedule teams within busing distance to save airfare and hotel (if home and home) costs.

If ASU believes there are several west coast teams eager to start a D1 hockey program then they should join the WCHA and use it as a landing place for the new west teams. Otherwise, I’d see if it might be possible to replace Miami with Miami moving to CCHA. Geographically that would make sense.

All of that seems plausible. Maybe the least likely concerns west coast teams eager to start something new, at least not this year with several sports (gymnastics, lacrosse, wrestling, etc.....) of athletics programs red-shirting or cut for now. But I've been surprised before.......

So who pays Miami’s huge exit fees from the NCHC and why would the CCHA want to add a 9th team?

Miami could just use the UAH model to avoid "exiting" - Just fold the team, which results in them leaving the NCHC, and then restart the program the next week and join the CCHA.

Utica OD story on the HCA announcement...impacting Colgate and DIII Utica . The piece failed to gather any updates or quotes from any Colgate or Utica coaches, but does mention an email from Hagwell:

"...ECAC Hockey Commissioner Steve Hagwell said in an email Thursday that the conference is “working on Return to Play protocols and schedule models for league contests in 2020-21.”

The ECAC said in July there was a focus on a “balanced scheduling approach that includes league contests and opportunities for member institutions to play non-league opponents. Such models are being compiled as options given the ever-changing conditions created by the COVID-19 pandemic.”

Maybe ASU is looking at ECAC? They are the only conference that has stated anything about playing non-conference opponents. Everyone else seems focused on intra-conference play only. Travel would be pretty tough & pricey for such. In common, both the Ivy League and PAC 12 have stated no athletics competitions during the Fall semester, which could change if NCAA basketball starts up, but I doubt it.
Probably unlikely match-up but stay tuned.........

Why a 9th team? Miami is D1, like BG. D1 schools have more clout with the NCAA. Having an odd number hasn’t been a major issue with B10 or Hockey East or Atlantic. As long as other conferences have an odd number you can schedule non-conference games without a problem on those conference bye weeks. As far as cost? I suspect that if the NCHA and CCHA and both teams want it to happen the money issues will be worked out. Contracts can always be changed if both parties are agreeable.

Pretty sure The Big 10 & the NCHC have an arrangement if they have odd # of teams to work together on scheduling , it’s in each other’s best interest. Not necessarily publicized much...

It appears ASU has a pretty strong hand, getting into a major conference without entry fees. But did have to forego home games which is ok for now being the rink capacity is too low for home team attendance.

No home games, that’s a pretty big sacrifice ASU is making but I’m guessing there weren’t many or any other options other than what the B1G was offering. All I can say is if ASU makes the tournament, no one can question them being in.

...Except that ASU didn't get into the BigTen. Not sure where you got that notion. They got 28-non-conference games, all on the road. ASU isn't even eligible for the BigTen tourney. Nobody charges "entry fees" for scheduling games. The BigTen needed a team to plug all their open weekends for one year due to having an odd number of team and ASU agreed. If you feel playing your whole season on the road is a "strong hand," I would not recommend going to Vegas...

Other than the fact that by making this agreement and ruling out any other non-conference games, the Big Ten and AzSt just effectively killed the PairWise and RPI. And considering that my information says that the biggest holdup right now is agreeing on a way to determine the NCAA tournament field - due in large part to the apprehension toward having a human committee to do it - these schools have just made it more difficult to determine.

True, but I think you have to weigh that against the reality that if something wasn't announced soon, you were facing mass exodus to the pros (Granato alluded to this). #Lesserofallevils
