Re: Still Complaining About ESPN...

Women's college hockey is not a niche sport?

I was thinking the exact same thing. There's a reason the U of M built Ridder for the ladies, and it's because they were downtrodden about the fact that when using Mariucci it was at be 25% full during women's games.

Re: Still Complaining About ESPN...

IMO, women's hockey is not a niche sport, which includes college hockey. Hockey is easily recognizable to the eye, therefore it's can't be a niche sport.

I'm excited to watch today's game, assuming I can find it.

I don't expect ESPN to carry it though as it's a small niche of a niche sport.

By your argument, ESPN should also be covering college tennis, track, cross country, rowing and on and on and on as all of those are "easily recognizable to the eye."

Remember, ESPN is a national network and there are large swaths of the country that don't care about the NHL or understand the sport of hockey, let alone college women's hockey.

Your pet interest (or mine) doesn't need to be their priority.

Harsh maybe, but the truth.

A niche sport is just one with a small audience. The audience for women's hockey is miniscule. You know those models that compare Mercury to Jupiter to the Sun to a Red Giant? If March Madness is the Red Giant, college hockey is Mercury. Women's hockey is Deimos.

Then why isn't cricket on TV all the time? It's easily recognizable and is the 2nd most popular sport in the world.

ESPN got the rights to the India Premier League - the best 20 over league in the world. Look for it on ESPN3 starting April 8. www.iplt20.com

It will take you about 3 games to figure the rules of cricket (there are not many) but the atmosphere of the Indians watching the sport they're nuts about is infectious.

Games are usually 11:30 am ET. On double header days the first game starts at 6:30 am.

EDIT: Screw 'em. They're charging $80 to watch the tournament on your PC etc.

That's my point. I'm actually trying to get into cricket, but it's the 2nd most popular sport in the world yet its world tournament is relegated to online status in the US.

AKA a niche sport. Just like women's college hockey.

I will be streaming the women's hockey game tomorrow (or at least try to). And I bet reruns of English darts gets higher ratings.

Find a friend who has Comcast.
Go to their house.
Take HDMI cables and connect a laptop to their TV.
Have them login to ESPN3 and watch the game.

its not quite that easy when you are traveling and often off the grid. however, Shirtless Guy came to rescue and we are going to have it. still it ****es me off that ESPN couldn't give the tournament TV carriage.

I still say they should really go with the OCHO and dump their non-prime time stuff there, and just make it all about the non-prime time stuff there.

The website... What were they thinking?!

Mother of God that is some of the worst design work I have ever seen in my life.
