St. Lawrence University 2013-2014: Carey, Carey, carry us to Placid ... And beyond?

Re: St. Lawrence University 2013-2014: Carey, Carey, carry us to Placid ... And beyon

I'm having a hard time believing that it matters much.

I agree Tim. Given SLU's home record this year they would be better going on the road.

St. Lawrence hockey notes: It’s win at home or bust for Saints - http://www.watertowndailytimes.com/article/20140228/SPORTS03/702289973

Well......guess it was "bust." Is anyone surprised??

Just keep on fighting. There is nothing else to do.

I don't think this team knows what the word "fighting" means Tayt. "Rollover" is a better word to associate with them at this point.

I agree Tim. Given SLU's home record this year they would be better going on the road.

Going on the road would definitely be better....our record at Appleton is atrocious. Never in my history of following SLU (which isn't as long as many of you) can I remember a team who played worse at Appleton. I knew QU would be loaded for bear and revenge. Just didn't think we'd be playing Red Rover, Red Rover, Rollover.
Fortunately for me I was on a business trip in NJ and had to work well into the evening. Tim kept texting me the updates and for a brief time I turned it on and watched on my laptop until I saw one of the most egregious turnovers I have ever seen to make it 5-0 or 6-0....(can't remember which.) I was actually embarassed someone from my work would walk by and see it on my laptop and ask..... "What is that?"

Irrelevant....that's the best term I can think of for this team. What a waste for the seniors and for some very talented players. Clearly an example of where the sum of the parts is NOT far greater than the whole.

I really don't think it matters either way, Vic. SLU is either going to pull a great series out of the hat, or get blown out. Where they play is irrelevant. It's not like they get any advantage from Appleton, and it's not like they respond in any consistent way to being on the road. They are mostly terrible and occasionally very good. As much as it hurts to say, I think the odds are they will be swept handily, no matter where they play and no matter which team they play. There's no doubt they could pull off a series win against any of the bottom 8 teams . . . but it won't have anything to do with the setting.

All that said, I do get your point and I do agree with you: if you had to pick based on the results so far, you'd have to say they have a better chance as the away team.

What if we just pass on the playoffs and hammer the nails into this coffin after tonight? This is way too painful.

There has to be a back story that we dont know about or is not being discussed here out of sensitivity to the players. Are important players playing hurt or is there dissension within? There is obviously no confidence in backup goaltending. Why have our best players and the best PK we've ever had simply ceased to produce? This does not make sense to me as a purely random phenomenon or bad luck.

Not sure we are ever going to know. I think it relates to the comment I made before about the sum of all the parts NOT being greater than the whole. We have some great individual talent (Carey's times two...Baker, Martin, Wick putting up some wonderful stats two years in a row, Martin, Sweetman, Bayreuther, etc.) However...mix them all together with the rest of the parts and for some reason it just doesn't work. Some nights they look masterful....most of the time it's painful. Too much of the latter and not enough of the former.
I do think there is some chemistry or other issue missing that we maybe don't know about. Maybe we will find out...maybe not. I just hate to see a natural scoring talent like Carey and a D Man who matured nicely like Baker go out on a losing note.

Did the system work in Ottawa???????

Not quite sure I understand the implication of your comment...but, I think Coach had a little more talent to deal with in Ottawa. Coach Carvel has one of the best hockey minds and knowledge in the business. He also has the experience. I'm pretty sure what he and the other coaches draw up isn't necessarily the problem. It is kind of a riddle though. One of the best PP's and one of the worst Penalty Kills.

Well somehow we manage to get the 8th and final home ice slot for the first round of playoffs. Not sure if this is a good thing or a bad thing given our recent home results. However, it was a good sign to see how they responded tonight after the rough game against Quinnipiac. Next week starts a new season from scratch. Let's do this boys!!!

It's a good thing. Appleton is a tough place to play in the playoffs. Plus Brown might arrive demoralized given how they blew their own chance at hosting this past weekend. Still, you guys will have your hands full, as Brown is a team made for the playoffs.

Gonna be a wild weekend in The North Country Coming up. FIVE teams and their fans needing to find lodging somewhere near to Canton and Potsdam to see the ECAC Women's Championships and the First Round of the Men's Championship.

I'd be more confident playing Union than Brown. Hell, I'd be more confident playing BC than playing Brown. This is the worst possible matchup for SLU, with the possible exception of Clarkson.

Agreed.........two kisses of death. Playing at home where we are absolutely horrid and playing our own personal horror story of a team in Bruno.

I don't think it matters who or where we play, so long as it wasn't Clarkson (now, they are a real horror story for us). Avoiding them was a good thing. We will go as far as our PK take us. The rest of the ingredients are there for a deep playoff run, but only if we consistently kill penalties like there's no tomorrow.

Be careful what you wish for Brian. That's exactly what they've been doing all year: with our PK, there is no tomorrow.

On a complete side note, one that needs to be addressed somewhere is the issue with accurate attendance listings? 1,427 out of a 3,000 seat arena? I was at the Princeton game (both actually) and let me tell you that place was packed, with very few empty seats, if any. Plus, completely full around the railing in the standing room. No way are these figures accurate, no way!!! I do however know why and that is the lack of accounting for the students in attendance. I wish there was a way to correct this. Not that it affects anything playing wise, but it still just doesn't look good for those that check out the attendance figures and such. It's quite a bit annoying honestly!

I'll trade you Brown's problem of not being able to actually get people to go to games! :D

But see that's the problem, they are getting people to go to the games and they're not being recognized for it ;) Anywho, I think both teams have equal issues at this point to work on. May the better of the two issue filled teams win :D

Oh, people are there, they are just chilling in boxes under the seats or ice or somewhere.;) And some of them have cursed us.:D

Okay, a few things. First, Carvy is not the problem. Part of coaching is PP and our PP has been among the best all season with a Freshmen QB and Centerman. When SLU plays their system, they look like the 1980 Russians. When we beat Union, Q-Peck, Ferris, Maine, those teams played well and we outplayed them. Plus, Hurley has a lot of input on D and Carvy is one of the smartest dudes in the game. Joe gave him the reins for a reason. He is the real deal and we are lucky to have him. He is maybe not the emotional spark plug that Joe was, but who is. When Joe got on a roll in the room, guys were fired up. I think Carvy is more like a Mike Keenan type....he doesn't say a lot but he knows the game and knows how to run a practice.

What I see when we lose is guys trying to do too much individually and cheating because they have gotten away with it before. We try to get too fancy. We don't shoot when we have shots, we go for one more picture perfect pass, we dont finish our checks, we don't play the man, we over-pursue in our end and break down our team defense. That's one reason I like Wick is he pretty much plays the same way all the time with just one annoying habit of taking a lot of penalties which are generally worth it because he just went for a hit and flattened a guy. He does finish checks. He has shown improvement every year which shows me he is coachable. This senior class is a Marsh class and I think you can expect rough patches with a regime change. I don't blame anyone. I think we can play, we have talent, but when we break down we gift wrap it for our opponents. I'll miss a lot of these seniors. Carey and that shot. Baker and his offensive flair. Wenny and his steady goaltending over a long career with a lot of minutes. Raley with playing a roll and being a team kid and good student. Austin, Wick and Essery too. Ess is a player that never hurts you and sometimes helps you. But, back to the point which is looking at games where we were scoring a lot like at Dartmouth, guys were skating hard, buzzing, outworking, outhitting and just out playing. Hughes or Doherty aren't the type to scoring the flashy goals, but they got a bunch of goals in that game that were old-fashioned flavor.

When our PK has been bad, which is most of the season, it's cause we break down, get pulled out of position or don't bare down or we give up a soft goal which, honestly, has been an issue too.

So we get to play Brown. ****! Boring hockey is guaranteed. They are a team built for the playoffs. They will bore us to death. Maybe we win, maybe we don't. Brown has been better than us in the two games this season. Actually, I think we were better down there but they earned the tie. But I don't see Yale or Clarkson losing so we would then get Union or Colgate on the road and nobody lines up great against Union...they're just good, and Colgate ****piled us twice this year. This team getting to Placid would be nothing short of a miracle. If it happens, great, and I like our chances there on big ice with us on a roll and a sense of desperation. But I am not holding my breath. We just have not been consistent this year and when guys try to do too much individually we actually stink. There is hope for the future. We won't learn anything because there is not anything to learn. We might learn that guys don't have confidence in Wenny or something like that, but if we play our game Wenny can be a winner and he does have 2 shut-outs in the last 2 weeks (3 if you include Q-Pecks:p)! But what coach is going to sit a senior and minute leader for a green freshmen or a competent but inexperienced backup? Carvy has to play out the hand he was dealt. We had Rotolo in the fold for this year and he blimped out his last year in Green Bay and he decommitted. It is what it is. This season goes in the books as a disappointment unless by some miracle we can get on a roll and win in LP. But that is not likely and it ends as a disappointment and us not playing up to our potential. I'll still miss the seniors, be thankful for their contributions, and hopeful for the future.

Now out to buy the red bull to stay awake next weekend.
