Re: St. Lawrence University 2013-2014: Carey, Carey, carry us to Placid ... And beyon
I'll trade you Brown's problem of not being able to actually get people to go to games!
Oh, people are there, they are just chilling in boxes under the seats or ice or somewhere.

And some of them have cursed us.
Okay, a few things. First, Carvy is not the problem. Part of coaching is PP and our PP has been among the best all season with a Freshmen QB and Centerman. When SLU plays their system, they look like the 1980 Russians. When we beat Union, Q-Peck, Ferris, Maine, those teams played well and we outplayed them. Plus, Hurley has a lot of input on D and Carvy is one of the smartest dudes in the game. Joe gave him the reins for a reason. He is the real deal and we are lucky to have him. He is maybe not the emotional spark plug that Joe was, but who is. When Joe got on a roll in the room, guys were fired up. I think Carvy is more like a Mike Keenan type....he doesn't say a lot but he knows the game and knows how to run a practice.
What I see when we lose is guys trying to do too much individually and cheating because they have gotten away with it before. We try to get too fancy. We don't shoot when we have shots, we go for one more picture perfect pass, we dont finish our checks, we don't play the man, we over-pursue in our end and break down our team defense. That's one reason I like Wick is he pretty much plays the same way all the time with just one annoying habit of taking a lot of penalties which are generally worth it because he just went for a hit and flattened a guy. He does finish checks. He has shown improvement every year which shows me he is coachable. This senior class is a Marsh class and I think you can expect rough patches with a regime change. I don't blame anyone. I think we can play, we have talent, but when we break down we gift wrap it for our opponents. I'll miss a lot of these seniors. Carey and that shot. Baker and his offensive flair. Wenny and his steady goaltending over a long career with a lot of minutes. Raley with playing a roll and being a team kid and good student. Austin, Wick and Essery too. Ess is a player that never hurts you and sometimes helps you. But, back to the point which is looking at games where we were scoring a lot like at Dartmouth, guys were skating hard, buzzing, outworking, outhitting and just out playing. Hughes or Doherty aren't the type to scoring the flashy goals, but they got a bunch of goals in that game that were old-fashioned flavor.
When our PK has been bad, which is most of the season, it's cause we break down, get pulled out of position or don't bare down or we give up a soft goal which, honestly, has been an issue too.
So we get to play Brown. ****! Boring hockey is guaranteed. They are a team built for the playoffs. They will bore us to death. Maybe we win, maybe we don't. Brown has been better than us in the two games this season. Actually, I think we were better down there but they earned the tie. But I don't see Yale or Clarkson losing so we would then get Union or Colgate on the road and nobody lines up great against Union...they're just good, and Colgate ****piled us twice this year. This team getting to Placid would be nothing short of a miracle. If it happens, great, and I like our chances there on big ice with us on a roll and a sense of desperation. But I am not holding my breath. We just have not been consistent this year and when guys try to do too much individually we actually stink. There is hope for the future. We won't learn anything because there is not anything to learn. We might learn that guys don't have confidence in Wenny or something like that, but if we play our game Wenny can be a winner and he does have 2 shut-outs in the last 2 weeks (3 if you include Q-Pecks

)! But what coach is going to sit a senior and minute leader for a green freshmen or a competent but inexperienced backup? Carvy has to play out the hand he was dealt. We had Rotolo in the fold for this year and he blimped out his last year in Green Bay and he decommitted. It is what it is. This season goes in the books as a disappointment unless by some miracle we can get on a roll and win in LP. But that is not likely and it ends as a disappointment and us not playing up to our potential. I'll still miss the seniors, be thankful for their contributions, and hopeful for the future.
Now out to buy the red bull to stay awake next weekend.
