Re: St Lawrence Hockey

8-5 4road points. i'll take it. Love that the second line, Doherty (Hanover High) and Ward (ex-Dartmouth) and Hughes (needed to get on the board) all had huge nights. But 5 GA? Pretty good first 10 games of the season.

I'll take 4 points on ANY weekend, especially on the road. However, this the 3rd time this year in just 10 games that we have let up 5 goals in a game. It's a little concerning that we continue to struggle keeping the puck out of the net. Hopefully it's something Coach Carvel and the boys can correct soon because I doubt the offense will continue to score the way they have been all season long. We need a good solid defense and a solid goaltender to go along with it. All in all, we had a great weekend, the PP still looks pretty amazing, especially on the top line. We are getting production all across the board so far, which was a concern at the beginning of the season, so that's good to see. Back to home for next weekend with Colgate and Cornell coming in to town. Let's hope we can keep the ball rolling (or puck to be politically correct). Let's Go Saints!

Re: St Lawrence Hockey

It appears that this year we can count on our (unnamed, and decidedly unloved) travel partner to beat up on the team we'll play Saturday--just like back in the day! And we will return the favor. Seriously, do you think either Central NY team is looking forward to playing in the North Country? The best part of their trips will be coming UP Route 81--going back will be miserable.

I don't think that is what we need to be alarmed about from this game. In this one we lost Sweetman who is our #2 or #3 D-Man with 3 minutes left in the first period and we lost Hudson six minutes in on two different majors. Dartmouth did not stop skating all night and they were aggressive going after the D and tiring them out. And once we got a 2 or 3 goal lead, we had a few sloppy shifts but I don't think it is indicative of team defense and who was controlling the game. Even with a jumbled lineup all night and mix and match lines and D-pairs, it just wasn't really indicative of what happened. They had 2 PP goals in the first. They did a good job of screening Wenny. The 5th goal they probably wouldn't score again as it was a cross-bar high tip. Not sure how to describe it, but that is not my concern at all. From the second on and about 5 minutes in on Friday night, SLU pretty well dominated and controlled play. Dartmouth was more opportunistic than Harvard for sure. I think what would haunt us before that is that even with 11 goals this weekend, we could and maybe should have had about 10 more. We had at least 7 pipes this weekend, 5-6 open nets, and three goal reviews none of which counted. So looking at defense there were 2 PP goals in the first which we played short handed for a lot of it. Then Dartmouth got two 'whatever' goals in the third when SLU had the game pretty well in hand. Given that Sweetman is a key guy in our end, and we lost him early....I am not worried about that.

Overall, a good weekend. SLU played very well for the most part and some guys were just on fire. Greg Carey had 4 points last night and was not the best forward. I'd give that to Doherty who was all over the ice last night and scored a HUGE shorty in the first. Ward and Hughes also played well and Matt Carey had two nice goals. Graham played a lot of quality minutes last night and held his own. It was as good as it gets on the road. I don't agree with Hudson's call...it was a 2 not a 5, but whatever.

I see the Saints got a commitment from Purmal....I think that's a big pickup. I've heard he is quite good and their goalie commit is playing well in the USHL with about a 92.5% SP. I think our defense is going to be really good and, in fact, I think they are better now than at any point last year. I think there are some more commitments coming. I'll take a few more weekends like that anytime. Could do with out 32 PIM's in the first, but not much to complain about the rest of the time.

Re: St Lawrence Hockey

I must learn to restrain my enthusiasm but this is as exciting a team as I have seen (via HD to this point) in 53 years.
Shades of the halcyon days of Bonzo Corby, Jim Salfi, Arlie Parker, the Masons, Richie Broadbelt et al. ?

I look forward to seeing in person Saturday's game against Cornell and following weekend vs RIT who - not unlike Brown-
can prove troublesome on their home ice.

Re: St Lawrence Hockey

Sounds like I missed a doozy last night but it was worth my alternative. I had great seats with some old friends who flew in from Chicago and Atlanta to see the Bruins/Leafs game. After watching SLU/Harvard on Friday night when I got to the Garden and saw the players....my first reaction was; man, these guys are huge. After watching the game for a bit there is obviously no comparison to the skill sets, but, I really think the college game is faster. NHL, much more deliberate.
What a GREAT NHL game to watch!!! As physical as it gets. Hitting, fights, scoring chances...NHL games don't get much better than what I watched at TD Garden last night. Two big impressions I came away with. One...Jarome Iginla played fearsome hockey and he has a lot of gas left in the tank. Two....as impressive a player as Phil Kessel is; I don't care for his game a bit. I know Toronto has a couple of set plays to spring him and others, but, I've never seen a player in all my years watching who hangs out at center ice or on the opposing teams blue line while his teammates are doing the dirty work and looking to spring him for a long pass/breakaway. Hockey equivalent of a basket hanger in Basketball.

Tim U was texting me updates of the Saints/Dartmouth game and my phone was lighting up like a Christmas tree. Couldn't believe all the penalties and scoring. Hopefully with a successful road trip under our belts we can come back to Appleton and establish Canton as being a tough place to play in again.

Re: St Lawrence Hockey

A fantastic road weekend result, for sure. Agree with you, Leckster, about not reading too much into allowing 5 goals last night. Dartmouth was somewhat expected to be able to score this year. Their issue is keeping the puck out right now.

Josh Seguin, a CHN writer, was at the game last night and remarked that this team is just plain fun to watch. He was also at the Yale game, and pretty much said the same.

All told, it looks like for the most part, we are getting offense from just about everybody (would like to see Wick and Essery pot a few, but they are more defensive forwards), the defense seems to be as good as we have had in several years, and we know wenny can pick his game up and get back to being a top goalie in the league.

Fear the North Country. We're back.

Re: St Lawrence Hockey

I was at last night's Dartmouth game and it was great once again to see many SLU fans make the trip to the game.

Let's just say the offense last night was almost fully cooking. I say almost, because as Leckster said, Greg Carey hit a couple of crossbars and in the 2nd period alone, the Saints could have added 3 more goals. As for the defense and the five goals allowed. One, they were certainly hurt by losing Sweetman, who is a very good defenseman and having to play and shuffle the rest of the game with only 5 defenseman. Two, a couple of the Dartmouth goals were just perfectly placed and Winny never saw them. In the end, the game film will show a few areas to improve upon, but this team can compete with anyone.

It's clear, this team has much more talent overall than last year, both upfront and back on defense.

I'm looking forward to next weekend and happy to be making the trip to Appleton to watch the games.

Don't forget the Gary Croteau teams that never really got their due because Cornell and Ken Dryden were so good at the same time. The '88, '89 and 2000 teams would argue your point --- but it's pretty exciting nonetheless. (For this online viewer) The nice thing is that the bloggers, coaches and writers are starting to wake up from their slumber and pay some attention to us. If they bother to refresh their browsers today, they might even vote us into the top 20 for tomorrow's poll.

The great thing is that the more miserable the North Country trip becomes, the more incented good out-of-league teams that have ignored us will be to schedule the North Country teams *in the North Country".

It's too early to really tell yet but there's evidence that the evil BIG 10 - Hockey East "challenge" could backfire at Pairwise/Tournament time this year because of the overall strength of the ECAC including SLU and Clarkson.

Somebody good at math may lay waste to that scenario but it's intriguing to consider. Not that I expect any Red Berensen sightings at Sergi's anytime soon

I know there's a way to reply with multiple quotes, but I sure haven't a clue how to do it - so went with this one. Those guys were before my time, but calling this team as exciting as them is a tremendous compliment.

My .02 - and this is also said knowing that my enthusiasm needs more restraint - is that Joe started 0-7-0 his first year ('85-'86) and we all know what happened after that. Not saying this will happen again, but I like our chances.

Tough ones this weekend, as all games are. I hope the team avoids the natural letdown of playing league games at home after 4 on the road.

I still want to know what the individual(s) who picked our frosh class as 10th-best in the league were smoking? Must be some great tobacco.

GO SLU.

I was really young when Bob Perani and Richie Broadbelt played and too young for OB, Terry Slater, Brian McFarlaine and the great 50's teams. All I can tell you is that the atmosphere at Appleton during the early 60's was electric. Packed house every game. Students lining up outside Appleton at 5pm on Clarkson game nights. Michigan teams in for Thanksgiving. I became a hard core fan around 4th grade in the mid/late 60's. Gary Croteau and Peter Slater were rock stars and the team was really exciting to watch. Croteau's nickname was "Bull" and that was all you needed to know about his style; warp speed, straight up the ice. Croteau was overshadowed during his time by Tim Sheehy of Boston College and to my mind, Croteau never got his due as a college player. Sheehy got the All-American nod and should have. Croteau by all rights belonged on the ECAC all-time top 50 players list but was overlooked. He had a solid 10 year NHL career. He was among the very first college players (Red Berensen and a handful of others excepted) to make it in the NHL, and along with Stan Mikita, among the earliest NHL players to wear a helmet. Much of his NHL career was spent playing in the obscurity of Oakland for the California Golden Seals. (I have a friend out here who was his SLU classmate who tells me Croteau was always good for tickets to the empty Oakland Arena).

I think those "tobacco" smoking voters vote the recruits based on each team's NHL draftees list and we don't have any. They missed Bayreuther who was almost drafted (and who will be eligible again this year) and Matt Carey who was red-shirting and Ward, who had left Dartmouth -- and a bunch of stealth guys like Sweetman. These voters are probably the same people smoking what is left of the same tobacco-- who this week voted North Dakota, *with the 37th best record in Division 1*, ahead of us in USAToday/USAHockey .

Currently trying to figure out how many days it might take to drive a covered wagon from San Francisco to Grand Forks.

Believe Croteau ended his career and resides in Colorado. I met his daughter out there who noticed me wearing an SLU garment at a tumbling class for our kids.

I would prefer to stay out of the polls and under the radar recruiting. That rating is a pure joke though for this class. There are potentially three All-American's in that class with Bayreuther, Sweetman and M. Carey. That ignores people like Parks who is green but absolutely huge in net and Mayo might transform into something special. To me it is irrelevant. The people who make these ratings are looking at paper, not the kids play before college. We are starting to put together some additional impressive recruits with guys like Hayden, Purmal, Gicewicz, and some others that are on their way. I think it is safe to say, our Freshmen outshined those from Harvard. Other than Espisito, I wasn't blown over by their freshmen. Guiltinan is not as good as Bayreuther or Sweetman right now. Zeilonka did nothing for me in that game.

I made the trip to UND in about 2005 or 2001 whenever we played out there. Petac was a freshmen. It was well worth it. I'd like to go back and see Englestad.

Re: St Lawrence Hockey

I remember Perani very well, awesome, I remember my hero Donny Wilmot scoring on him in the third for a 2-1 Gate victory. around 1965

Re: St Lawrence Hockey

Probably 1965--I remember that losing streak. In that era we still had freshman teams, and Bob didn't have the firepower behind him that he would have had today.

My senior year of '64-'65 was a huge let down after prior teams. Sadly, that was the year Jinx Doyle died after an accident.
If my faltering memory is accurate, incoming frosh team that year (Class of '68 ) allegedly bested varsity in scrimmage(s)

That sounds right. The '67-'68 team was really good. Croteau, Pete Slater, Bill Wilkinson, John Went in net. They were third seed in the old 17 team ECAC. We lost a first round home playoff game to BC in OT with Tim Sheehy scoring. One of the most exciting games I can remember. Also memorable in that BC had about 10 nuns on their side of Appleton sitting in the first row. During warmups, the nuns hung an abusive banner over the glass about beating the "farmers". Jerry Healey, who was from Melrose MA skated by and tore the sign out of their hands with his goalie stick. Anyone else at that game? It was our last home playoff for about 15 years.

Re: St Lawrence Hockey

Well that was one to burst everyone's bubble.
I only watched on the Internet feed..... but that sure didn't look like the team I saw the last two weekends. I'd be curious for those at the game to post their opinions/thoughts, but, watching without sound (don't know why I couldn't get the announcer broadcast but I had crowd noise?) it sure looked like we weren't very hungry tonight. Very sloppy play led to a couple of Colgate's goals.

Also it could be where the camera and arena microphones were placed but I sure was hearing more Colgate cheering and fans than SLU fans.

I guess with young teams you never know what you are going to get, but, I would label tonight as our first "bad loss" of the season. In the other games I have watched on the Internet or the three in person.....I always felt we put out the superior or at least equal effort. Didn't feel that way tonight and that is disappointing.

Who was there that has a report??? Tayt? Muskieman? Tupper Lake crew? Saints1?
