Re: St Lawrence Hockey

Yes, he does....................and timed it perfectly, opening the fall of my first year ('70). I didn't know you played for Canton. You guys had some great teams, and many NJCAA tiles with "OB" as Coach, back in those days.

Yes we did, I played on two of them. I "majored" in foosball at the Hoot:D We met at Starr once Muskie in section nine I believe. Did you know OB O'Brien ?

I remember meeting you at Starr, I think for a playoff game. I knew OB, but only to say hi to one another back in the day. I understand he's quite a magician.

Re: St Lawrence Hockey

Hey guys, just a heads up if you aren't able to make the Yale game, it will be broadcast on ESPN3 online. You may or may not be able to access it, depending on your cable provider, and I believe it takes a few minutes to enter your information to access it. Broadcast begins at 6:45, and includes the national championship banner ceremony.

Hopefully we rain on the parade ;)

SLU came through with a ticket for me so I will get to see this year's version of the Saints in person. Am looking forward to it. I see the USCHO predictions had us getting swept this weekend. They made that prediction with no mention of the horror palace that Meehan has been for us over the years. I know banner raising's in the NHL are poison to the home/champion teams....hope that carries over to College Hockey. Still....even though it is not us... I will be proud to see an ECAC Team raising an NCAA Championship banner.

The picks of us getting swept had mostly to do with us not being able to keep the opponents from scoring. Hopefully we can do a better job of that. Hard to match lines but I hope Carvy has a good checking line to go against Brown's top line...as for Ylae...I think they are deep with a good recruiting class so potentially their whole line up is difficult to match up with. Should be a fun weekend and I hope to make both games.
As Leckster said.........I don't think we need to worry about getting a ticket at Meehan.

Re: St Lawrence Hockey

End of the 2nd period and I have a few impressions so far ...

Pros: We always seem to start strong, we come out with a lot of energy. The freshmen still look great, very composed!

Cons: We seem to fizzle more and more as the game progresses ... Wenninger is fighting it again and for whatever reason has been off all season (just my opinion). Maybe his confidence is broken

3-3 after 2, let's hope for a strong 3rd!

Re: St Lawrence Hockey

And of course no sooner do I open my mouth then does Wenninger come out with an excellent 3rd period ... Headed to OT

Re: St Lawrence Hockey

Watched this on ESPN 3. I thought we looked really good. Not too many nights Greg Carey will miss 4 point blank shots in late 3rd and OT. The Freshmen look like pros. I love the way Sweetman rushes the net. In general, we really stretched the ice without giving Yale much of anything to look at down the stretch. It's still early and the grind hasn't begun but I like the look of this team so far. Certainly exceeds my pre-season expectations. Experience has taught me to have zero expectations for tomorrow night in the Tombs of Meehan .

Re: St Lawrence Hockey

I was nervous about the OT--but the team came out flying--they showed that they were out to win, not out to not lose. A great effort by the entire team. Tomorrow they will erase all those bad Brown memories.

We looked just as good in person. It was my first in person look and I came away impressed. Got to watch and sit with Don Clark who always has good insights and perspectives, and, he probably see's the team more than any of us. I commented to Don that over the years, although always a fan; there were teams I didn't like watching because I felt the effort wasn't there. This certainly isn't one of those teams. They hustle, work hard and give a good effort. They are a fun team to watch and root for.
Got to watch the pre-game banner ceremony and I clapped and cheered for Ylae. Happy to see any ECAC Team (well may not every team) raise a banner like that.

First period was all us. Passing was wonderful and although the shots were close. It was all us. Second period was the opposite, the ice was tilted Ylae's way. They were all over us. They are very fast as always. Third period was more even but Ylae still held the edge. To our credit we had the better of the OT. Your comments about Greg Carey and those shots is spot on. Late in the third he had the puck, all alone and I thought for sure it would be the game winner. Then the partial breakaway at the end of OT........he has such a bullet of a wrist shot but he chose the slapper and missed.

The freshman class is indeed deep and impressive. Hudson nailed a Ylae player with a ferocious check....."D" rush and handle the puck well (Sweetman and Bayreuther) and although not a freshman, Ward is a solid addition. The only part of the game I felt we really needed improvement on is staying out of the box. Penalty calls were very uneven. The first Interference cal on Baker was bogus....then after that Ylae did far worse and never got called for worse interference infractions.

All in all it was a fun game to watch....very exciting. Beautiful rink...National Champs, banner raising...and we hung with them the whole night and tied them. Nice job boys.

Re: St Lawrence Hockey

Glad you got to see a great game, Mike. From what I was reading in recaps and on twitter, many said that both teams look very good, and this was one of the "crisper" games so far this season.

Hate blowing (another) 2 goal lead, especially when you include a last second goal, but they didn't collapse into the 3rd. A tie at the Whale is nothing to be disappointed with, and this could be a game that really pays dividends through the season.

Now, to hopefully not have an extended Halloween at our haunted house in Providence tonight...

Re: St Lawrence Hockey

Good result. (Allain wasn't so happy about it.)

Clarkson beat Brown and Harvard beat RPI!

Re: St Lawrence Hockey

Good game so far, 3-2 Saints midway through the 2nd period. Is there any possible way to trade the Brown announcers for our own or any others for that matter? These guys are difficult to listen too, borderline laughable!:p

Re: St Lawrence Hockey

3-3 final from Meehan. Given our history at that place, i'll take a tie. We are undefeated in ECAC play so far ;)

And Brown continues their ridiculous streak of years taking at least a point in the series. What is it now, 20+?

Some well off Brown alumni needs to donate a rink. I think SLU hockey alumni would gladly take care of the demolition of the Meehan Morgue for them.

2 points on that trip is pretty good. 2 points on the road and take 3+ points on home weekends will be recipe for a bye.

I wonder if any alumni of Brown know there is a hockey team given the attendance. Re two points on the road and 3 at home, If we can do that, dont look know but our schedule is starting to look really good for downstream Pairwise comparisons. Northeastern, Ferris, Vermont + lots of ECAC teams are all doing well in RPI rankings. Long way to go I know.

Just like the old NHL.....tie on the road and win at home.

Box score said there were 1,000 people at the game. They might have sold 1,000 tickets but no way there were 1,000 people there. As usual it was a quiet place inside and the Saints didn't seem to play with the same verve and enthusiasm as they did at Ylae. First period was interesting...lot's of scoring. The other interesting development was poor coach Carvel caught an errant puck in the noggin and had to leave the bench. He came back out for the second period with a bandage above his eye and an icebag to try and keep the swelling down.

Like at Ylae we committed too many penalties. Although technically Brown only scored one PP goal...one of their others came just after we killed off a penalty. Wenny made a couple of stellar, huge saves in the third period....one on Nick Lappin who appeared to have an open net only to have Wenny come flying acrosss to knock the puck out of the open net.

OT was played mostly in center ice or chasing dumped in pucks but Brown had a couple of slappers from the points as time was winding down that were pretty scary. All in all, two points on the road is a decent result.
