St. Cloud State University HUSKIES!!

Re: St. Cloud State University HUSKIES!!

I think the Holiday Inn downtown is an OK hotel, reasonably modern, a restaurant, located on the banks of the Mississippi within easy walking distance of the Saint Cloud campus.
Saint Cloud and nearby areas are really, really pretty but it is a not a very large city.

Yes, there is a large Holiday Inn, but on the west side of town, not downtown. That hotel is the Kelly Inn--with attached Green Mill restaurant. Many other good restaurants in town. Great access to several top notch golf courses. Take a tour of the campus of St. Cloud State University. Close by there is St. John's U, St. Benedict's College. Free concerts at Lake George every Wednesday night during the summer. . .

St. Cloud is the regional retail center with lots of shopping. The Radisson Hotel is right next to the Kelly Inn.

I guess it is a little early for line combinations, specially since the roster is not full. I'm wondering if the coach is still trying to recruit any transfers ? At this point they don't have any assistant coaches either. Any guesses who might be good candidates?

Re: St. Cloud State University HUSKIES!!

The following two players are listed in the D1 14-15 commit thread but not on the roster. Anyone know why?

St. Cloud State
Brittney Anderson ................D ...........................(Hill-Murray) ..........................Hudson, WI
Emma Turbyville ..................D ..............................(SSM) .................................Chicago IL

Haven't looked in awhile...last I did it appeared none of the 2014-2015 freshmen had been added even though it shows 2014-2015 roster.

There is also Elissa Erickson, I think Justine Fredette d-committed.
Not sure why they are not on the roster.

Re: St. Cloud State University HUSKIES!!

So far the huskies have
4 returning D , 2 freshman and 1 transfer for a total of 7 defence man . Not counting Skye Kelly , she is not returning , which is too bad, top 2 d-man
9 returning F, 1 freshman and 1 transfer for a total of 11 forwards. Not counting A Hammner as a forward, which is good, my opinion, she was a much better d than forward.
That's 1 forward less than 4 full lines,, I hear coach Rudd likes a smaller bench, I would agree , play your top forwards more, the one problem is injuries.
That would leave me to believe, they might look to add another forward, the problem with that, not many good players are available in late July.
Now that I just looked at the roster, it gives me a little better idea at who might play on the top line. Just wondering if Illlkanen is a winger or centre , not sure, have to look that up, anyone?

That is such a false statement

Your right, my "statement" set me up for failure. The safe thing to say was, most of the high end talent is not available in late July. Is there a player out there that still has not made her decision? Yes of course, is there a high end talented player that has not committed, probably, is there a high end talented player who has no clue where she wants to go and might pick SCWH as her destination, probably not. The huskies had 2 very late additions last year, those players are hard workers, but they lack natural high end talent. Kids are committing 2 years ahead of their grad year, not many are committing less than 2 months before the season starts.
Maybe Giwan has some examples?

No such thing as natural high end talent.

It's almost all learned, save for size, maybe additional rods and cones to be able to see better etc. Even mix of muscle fibers for hockey players has been shown to be fairly typical not some huge percentage of fast twitch as several on this web site believe is the case. I believe there are several players going into some 19U league etc that could step right in.

Do I have specific names? NO but theses players are regularly visible at some tournament somewhere. Recruiters do not scourge every ice rink etc but the talent is out there.

There are many examples or top level athletes in other sports that spend much more time, money and effort than women's hockey looking for talent and miss it. Face it football is the big dog sport in spending of money. Explain how Aaron Rodgers has to go play at a Community College because he received no offers except for a walk-on offer at Illinois? There are other such examples.

My point only is that there are players out there, even star or potential star ones. Recruiting is not some specific science and with minimal funding etc is harder yet.

FYI this is not only my opinion but several 3rd party people that do not have skin in the game.

With respect to adding players at this stage, SCSU hired a guy with vitually no exposure to the women's game. I don't suspect Rud caught many u19 or girls HS hockey games when he was in Colorado. He doesn't have any familiarity with the 2014 grads. At this time, he can't see any of them play in competitive games. So, I think it is highly unrealistic to expect him to add "new" kids to the roster. If he does, he has no idea who he is adding. I suppose he could entertain some more transfers, but he is much better off planning for 2015 and beyond, which is my guess what he is doing --- visiting and meeting with the current players, announced transfers and NLI signees and finding 2 new assistant coaches.

Do you believe there is no possible player in the BeanTown Classic this weekend that would not meet this need? There may have been a player at the I-Cup this past weekend. I believe you have some of the BEST players that play during the summer, of course they are all not the best, there is a mix.

I believe there is a decent tourney somewhere in Duluth next month that will have some college scouts there, or so I have been told.

First, what need? They have 9D, 10F and 3G (counting transfers and reported NLIs). I don't think they have a need.

Are there graduating seniors who are uncommitted (or committed to DIII) that can play D-1? Absolutely, but this coach has no basis to know who they are.

These summer tournaments have a huge disparity in talent and ages on teams. So, is he going to add kids based on watching them play in 1 summer tournament of their senior year? Personally, I think it is unlikely.

Illikanen mostly played center at Providence very good at face offs. She was an outstanding freshman offensively. She struggled a bit as sophomore to match her freshman year offensively and had a very high +/-. If she trains hard this summer & stays healthy, happy and motivated she can have a big impact for SCSU Huskies.
