Spartan Hockey takes a vacation; turns a page

Re: Spartan Hockey takes a vacation; turns a page

I think you need to read those bios again.

I am talking about Gilmore and Miller. Gilmore did youth hockey (get real). If miller has coached in GR and NYI then I did not read anything in the Freep or Wiki about it. If I am incorrect then "I stand corrected". :-)

Okay, the MSU press release gives more info on Miller. Fair enough. I still do not see the logic of this choice. Anastos and Miller are not what I would call experienced recruiters. Was Danton Cole interviewed?

I am willing to lay money on the table that Anastos and Miller, along with Newton are going to be VERY good recruiters. There are a couple of things that set apart the OK from the REALLY GOOD recruiters, and I can tell you that Anastos brings to the table the right ammunition for recruitment. (I have spent some time talking with the man.) I don't know Miller personally, but I would say that if he's 1/2 the personality that I'm told he is, he'll also be good at that part of the game. The recruitment process can be long, or it can be short, but the biggest part of the game is salemanship, and even more of it is confidence, in yourself as a coach, in the staff, and in the program.

You know, a coach can recruit the best players in the game but if they don't buy into your style, or the style of coaching just doesn't work, then it's for naught. (Minnesota Gophers are a prime example) MSU has good players, but the coaching staff couldn't put together the correct style to take advantage of what they have.

We won't know for sure if all of this comes together for a couple of years, but the real test is going to be how the current team is playing after the GLI. If February starts and this team is playing a winning style, you'll know that the decision was the right one. If they fall apart at that point, then the decision may not have been the right one.

Re: Spartan Hockey takes a vacation; turns a page

Miller has coached Grand Rapids, Anaheim and the New York Islanders. Newton has been a coach for over 30 years. Gilmore has fulfilled the same volunteer role earlier in his career.

Miller only coached 4 years, and hasn't coached for 8 years. Gilmore only coached 2 or 3 years, and that was 15 years ago. I don't think Newton is enough to counter the inexperience/inactivity of the rest of the coaching staff in the eyes of potential recruits.

Well sir, we're sorry our coaching staff doesn't have the longevity of your team's. They are loyal, enthusiastic and committed SPARTANS, and that's all I need to hear.

Kdilks is a mighty seer. We're DOOMED.

Right.
Recruiting will not be an issue.

Re: Spartan Hockey takes a vacation; turns a page

Earliest by far (By months!) I've ever seen an MSU schedule posted, official or not. Pos-rep and mad props for you, sir.

A couple of notes:
1.) Looking at my work schedule and ticket prices for the Ice Breaker, it looks as though I will not be making the eastward drive down US-2 to Grand Forks in October. I'm really bummed about this.
2.) I will, however, find some way to make it back to EL for the UAF series. I don't know how, and I definitely don't have the financial logistics worked out yet, but I'm really going to try to make it back to town for that set. Unfinished business that I must finish. :D

Aside from that, I'm sure I'll probably catch a good chunk of this season on the Fox College Sports regional channels.

Things still could change - there's still some debate about the road Ohio State series dates, for example.
Overall, just another sign that things are about to change in a whole lotta ways, not just on the ice.

BTW, CONGRATS TO BOB ESSENSA ON WINNING THE CUP!

Re: Spartan Hockey takes a vacation; turns a page

I am pleased to see that we still have our exhibition against WO. I remember somebody mentioning that that wasn't going down this year. I was fearing that we were gonna have to start off in grand forks.

Hopefully we actually beat WO this year...

Unfortunately (fortunately?), notice something missing from the top of our schedule. Time will not afford the playing of the _ game. And so the new regime gets to see its program play ONCE before heading off for UND.

North Dakota might be one team we may be pretty outclassed against. It'll surely be a difficult game to start off the Anastos regime. How we compete in that one may tell us a lot.

So, I'm watching the replay of MSU v. Ferris on Fox College Sports Atlantic right now.

We're getting green helmets this year, right? I maintain the opinion I had nine months ago: The white helmets with the all-green uniforms look ridiculous.

Re: Spartan Hockey takes a vacation; turns a page

Now I'm watching the replay of the UM v. MSU game from Joe Louis Arena from this past season on FCS-Atlantic. I'm pretty sure I started at least 70 percent of those "Go green!" chants I hear in the background.

Geez. The season doesn't start for another four months and already I miss "being away from it" so darn much.

Major job cuts at Lansing State Journal today, including word that Neil Koepke is one of the casualties. This likely marks the end of hockey coverage, not to mention the beginning of the end of having a newspaper.
