Spartan Hockey takes a vacation; turns a page

Re: Spartan Hockey takes a vacation; turns a page

Derek Grant just scored his first professional goal with the Binghamton Senators.

Good on him.

Re: Spartan Hockey takes a vacation; turns a page

Have there been any recent murmurs regarding Anastos keeping to ejecting any assistants?

And good for Grant, he chose the money route, I hope it works out for him.

I hope Jake realizes that getting this drunk really isn't a good idea ...

They make a very strange comment regarding his BAC. It's ".17, which is more than twice the legal amount for someone who is driving." or something to that effect. I wonder why they would say that when he wasn't driving? Seems irrelevant.

Anyway, he made a bad decision and MIP's happen. At least he wasn't driving or was outrageously drunk or anything. College kids are gonna drink. Though i do wonder what he was doing to get picked up by a cop.

We wouldn't even be reading about this if his last name wasn't Chelios. I would imagine living under a microscope would be tough.

They were just trying to put the number in context, and the legal limit for driving is really the only thing there is. Even if he could have hypothetically been drunker and not blacked out, he was still well into the range where his impairment could have gotten him cited for public intoxication, even if he were of legal drinking age.

Unfortunately, the combination of being underage, blowing a .17 and being the son of someone famous does make it more newsworthy than most. However - and I speak from experience - blowing that much of a BAC, it would have been newsworthy if his name was Jake Smith. I say again - I'm thankful he wasn't driving, and I hope he learns a lesson from the experience.

I don't disagree that he was "wasted", but I'm willing to bet that there are underage kids, every weekend, that blow that high and if you read about it, it's buried in the paper somewhere. If he had been driving, then it might have hit a section of the paper that is read by many, but this is only published for all to read because of two things: 1) he's a D1 athlete, AND 2) his father is Chris Chelios.

Don't get me wrong here, I think that he needs to police himself better, as does the team. I also think that if you were to test 1/2 of the folks coming out of a college bar on a Saturday or Sunday after closing, the majority would be over the .17. .08 is the legal limit for driving, right? That's equal to ... probably three or four beers? I'm just trying to put this into perspective.

How do you control underage drinking is the real challenge. Bust them more often, and make their names public? That might help. I bet it helps in this case.

I sound like I'm arguing with Arwen, and I'm not. I just feel for the kid as he is being punished publicly more than most because of his name.

Re: Spartan Hockey takes a vacation; turns a page

Do we start a"Fire Anastos" thread?:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

There must've been a Fire Comley thread even before Mason walked out the door. I'm a relative n00b to the phenomenon.
But I think MCB will be proven right and all the knee-jerks (including me) will realize what a transformation this can be.

Hearing TA's refreshing take on D1's relationship with the Pro's, I can't see how in 2 or 3 years this can't be a scary-good program. We could have a 13-to-15-win team in 2011/12, but I guarantee they'll be more watchable.

For a taste of what's coming, you could do worse than see the last 6 minutes of his speech here. There's a philosophy regarding the topic that his predecessor wouldn't have embraced.

I regret that I didn't bring a digital recorder to last night's meeting.

Wow. Can't ask for a much better outcome. Does Woodward keep his radio gig?

It was a pleasant "surprise". I doubt Woody keeps his radio job but I refuse to be the first person to ask him. The only sad part of the deal.

Two guys with no coaching experience to help a guy who has not coached or recruited in 18 years. This keep getting more weird.

And both Cole and Luongo ought to tell Hollis to take a leap in two years when they come begging them to take the job.

Miller has coached Grand Rapids, Anaheim and the New York Islanders. Newton has been a coach for over 30 years. Gilmore has fulfilled the same volunteer role earlier in his career.
