Spartan Hockey takes a vacation; turns a page

Re: Spartan Hockey takes a vacation; turns a page

So, pro camp starts tomorrow at Munn. Anybody stopping by the barn for the event?

Re: Spartan Hockey takes a vacation; turns a page

The roster for 2012 is up on the athletics website.

1.) Five freshman.
2.) Hoomaian's playing this year. I think Heisenberg had him as a 2013 commitment.
3.) Branden Carney is also on the roster, who's not on Heisenberg's commitment list for MSU at all. 4g-12a-16pts with the Owatonna Express (NAHL) last season. He's a big fella: 6-foot-2, 205 pounds.
4.) A.J. Sturges is on the roster as a redshirt senior.
5.) Tanner Sorenson is my new de facto favorite player on this team for obvious reasons. Sourdough pride!

The Hoomaian was for 2011. Sourdough or no, Sorenson's a nice addition.
I guess Carney is the new Josepher ... who is no longer enrolled.

Incidentally, the new staff has already implemented stuff this off-season that we wouldn't have dreamed of in the last 10.

I am curious about what this new stuff is...like training stuff or what?

A fitness program, conducted by an ex-Marine who has already put the volleyball team through it, called "Judgement Day". Coach said he's glad he'll be watching.

Interesting...Hopefully it yields results. I thought teams like Miami really outskated us last year and would like to see a little more jump in our guys' skates.

Obviously we are lacking pure goal scorers again but I am hopeful that having a team with an actual senior class and an improved strength/conditioning in the off season will help us grind out quite a few wins.

And moves the weight room and training table to Munn so there's no escaping the post-workout routine nor cheating the diet. And also calls up season ticket renewers to personally thank them. And expands the student section and (for the first time) moves them to the glass.

As I am fond of telling the fence-sitters - you might not see a ton of wins this year, but you won't see guys skating in sand by the third period. I would safely predict the energy level will be higher and more consistent from Friday to Saturday.

Re: Spartan Hockey takes a vacation; turns a page

I still don't see any goal scoring.:confused: Hope to be surprised.

Re: Spartan Hockey takes a vacation; turns a page

Well, had to wait around on campus today for tailgating so i made my way to munn to escape the heat like i usually do. It was closed down but as i was walking away a former player whose name i can't place but whose face i recognized let me in. I went in and caught like 2 minutes of a captain's skate before i was kicked out. Apparently due to the football game, general public was not allowed in there today. Anyways, it was nice to see the team skate though i couldn't watch nearly long enough to glean any information from it.

Afterwards i got to head over and watch the marching band practice for like an hour. I always really enjoy watching them.

EDIT: As of today, our helmets are still white., by the way.

Re: Spartan Hockey takes a vacation; turns a page

Was able to watch a good chunk of a captains skate today after my only wednesday class.

Krug led the team through some 2 on 1, 3 on 2, neutral zone regroup, breakout drills, and finally some 5 on 5 scrimmage. I thought there was good energy and speed in the scrimmage which is good for it just being a september captain's skate. The practice didn't have a very informal feel, either. They went from drill to drill without much delay so it's cool that they are ready for business.

I didn't catch any of the freshman as i didn't know their numbers and their jerseys don't always much their true number so if you can't catch the tiny one on the back of their helmet then it is tough to see who is who. I'll look for them next week.

I thought Palmisano looked sharp.

Also did a shootout. Merrifield, Wolfe, Sturges, and Hayes all scored as well as someone whose number i couldn't catch. Hayes and Wolfe both had very slick goals.

Passing was a little sloppy at times, but that's certainly not out of the ordinary for this time of year.

I payed special attention to Leveille and while he doesn't seem hampered by his knee specifically, it looks like he is definitely not at 100%. He looked to be going about 70%, was a step slower and has lost a bit of grace. I could not tell which knee he hurt so I think it is just a matter of conditioning and training his strength and edges back up. I am hoping that it comes back quickly for him. I really want him to go out with a bang with his senior year.

Anyways, it's tough to glean much information out of practices. I did like the intensity shown in the 5 on 5 and nobody seemed to have summer legs. Maybe Friday or next week I will check out the freshmen.

Thanks for the update, saurus. Hopefully we can make it out there in the next couple weeks. I'm hoping Leveille sits this season out unless he has another dimension we haven't seen yet.

Re: Spartan Hockey takes a vacation; turns a page

I have my doubts that he will be able to play at a high level for a while, or even a D1 college level by October based on what i saw yesterday. If we lose him for this season as well, it will only make Anastos' inaugural season that much more difficult. He was a key piece to the offense this year.
