Spartan Hockey takes a vacation; turns a page

Re: Spartan Hockey takes a vacation; turns a page

This would have happened even if Comley had stayed. Now Hollis needs to get a coach in here ASAP to talk with the players and recruits. Will this be the only one to jump? I honestly don't know..
Well, this time yesterday I would have said that I felt pretty safe about Perlini and Nill. Now? I really don't know.

Re: Spartan Hockey takes a vacation; turns a page

Given the uncertainty with the coaching transition, I wouldn't find anybody getting called up early terribly surprising.

Too true. Who exactly do the Senators call at this point to discuss what Grant needs to do in terms of his development?! That decision gets a whole lot easier when there isn't a coach. Not that State needs to rush the decision, but if people don't understand that drafted players who are doing well in college hockey might leave if their NCAA team isn't able to convince the NHL team that they can handle the player development needs, well, here's yet another example of that reality......

Not having a coach yet is certainly a factor, but I actually had two other things in mind. One thing is the lack of stability, since it doesn't appear that the program is being handed off to an assistant or close disciple of the previous coach. Most likely the first year or two is going to be spent installing new systems, creating a new atmosphere, etc. Usually upperclassmen have that out of the way and can focus developing their game, and now they're back to square one. Second thing is uncertainty, insofar as there aren't really any established names on the table. The coaches being mentioned might turn out to be fantastic coaches, but it's not a risk that NHL teams need to take with their player's development.

Re: Spartan Hockey takes a vacation; turns a page

Well, the Grant situation does bring up a question, though...

Do you bring up a recruit like Tanner Sorenson early to fill the spot because Sorenson, in particular, has a high likelihood of jumping elsewhere within the next year? I mean, the 2011 and 2012 classes have essentially been obliterated over the past two seasons with defections to major junior franchises and other college programs, and MSU needs to find ways to retain whatever talent is left.

Well, actually, that question is moot right now because MSU doesn't have anybody in the head coaching position to actually make that decision.

Grumble.
Sorenson? Maybe. Berry, as one who is already thriving in the grind of the USHL, almost certainly. The fact that a long-verballed commit in Sinelli may be dropped completely from MSU's future plans, and DeBlouw will take some time to recover from an unfortunate setback, the choices are narrowed.

Well, this time yesterday I would have said that I felt pretty safe about Perlini and Nill. Now? I really don't know.
Hang your hat on the fact that Ottawa is going to completely turn over its offense from two years ago, while Perlini - even though he's got the physique and and skills to go - would get buried in the depth of Anaheim's offensive talent pool right now.

-- This is not to say that ANYTHING should surprise us now.

I have to admit being a bit surprised that a new coach hasn't been announced. MSU has had time to do a search (how many good candidates could there be?) and decide on who will take over for Comley. So why the delay?

Could the delay be because another D-I coach who is still in the playoffs is in line to be the next MSU coach? Some might ask why would a successful coach at another D-I school want to rebuild a Spartan program? How about the Big Ten Hockey Conference? It will certainly be a game changer. It will be a conference able to generate a lot more money and TV exposure. That might be enough to convince a successful coach at another program to move while the chance is available.

Re: Spartan Hockey takes a vacation; turns a page

I can only assume (hope, really) that Hollis is waiting to see how the whole Gwozdecky situation shakes out at Denver.

I think this is probably true. Gwoz' contract here expires in 2014, and I think DU wants to see what Gwoz does in the playoffs this year before they decide on a new contract offer for him. Gwoz current contract was structured a long time ago and likely has some longevity seniority/annuity bonuses in it that he'd like to keep, while the current administration prefers new contracts that are more performance-bonus-based. We should know a lot more by mid April.

Re: Spartan Hockey takes a vacation; turns a page

Well now that the soap opera is over, might as well get behind the new guy and support him. It does no good at this point to throw dirt on the program or to spend the whole offseason b**ching about the choice. Keeping positive can only help - not only for the guys who wear the skates but for MSU's image to those who are thinking about it.

I think we'll know something more about the guy by the talent he brings in.
We'll know even more after a couple weeks of play.

Re: Spartan Hockey takes a vacation; turns a page

It was thought one of the reasons why MSU jettisoned Comley in January was to get a jump on the search for a replacement. Conventional wisdom suggested MSU wanted to be first in line for the BEST possible coach. Tom Anastos....best possible coach??? This is beyond laughable. Does anyone think Tom Anastos was on Penn State's radar for their head coach? On ANYONE'S radar? You could draw up a list of 100 potential candidates for the MSU job and Anastos' name would not have been on anyone's list. Not for the MSU job....not for any D1 coaching job. Hollis said he didn't talk to Anastos about becoming the head coach until last Sunday. Does ANYONE believe that? Please....there is a lot about this hire that doesn't pass the smell test. This is not a good day for Spartan hockey.

Re: Spartan Hockey takes a vacation; turns a page

This is not a good day for Spartan hockey.

How do you know it's not? None of us do. We have to trust that Mark Hollis knows what he is doing. If you are a true Spartan fan, support him until he gives you a reason not to. If you're going to crack on him for the simple reason he's not who you thought would be hired, then don't bother to support the program any more

Do we start a"Fire Anastos" thread?:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

Re: Spartan Hockey takes a vacation; turns a page

Well now that it has taken some time to sink in, it's time to get behind Coach Anastos. Sure, it's surprising, to say the least but the guy knows his hockey so let's hope he can coach it.

This hire is so radical that perhaps it could really work out well. Only time will tell.

I am gonna stay optimistic all summer, though.

I agree....

The proof will be whether or not Anastos can win...if he can no one will care about his lack of coaching experience. That said, he has some advantages to start with.

1) Taking over an underperforming team. This team was better than 10th place and the odds are it should place higher next year with a little more puck luck.
2) Several good recruits in the pipeline...assuming he can convince them to stick with the program.
3) Connections -- He has lots which he could use to his advantage.

The first indications of where we are headed will be:
1) How many, if any, current players jump ship.
2) How many, if any, of our top verbal recruits decommit.
3) Who he picks as his assistants. I'd expect him to keep one for continuity and replace the other. Who he picks could be pretty telling especially if it's someone like a Danton Cole.

Agreed, and the assistants will be the biggest "tell".

From Wednesday morning to now - a mere 48 hours, I believe my system has experienced a small amound of G-force in its 180-degree revolution of heart about this decision.
OK - the guy hasn't been behind the bench of a college hockey program in 20 years. However -
You think this guy doesn't know every nuance of the game, its rules and quirks, how to deal with personnel and how to manage in his 25 years as coach, administrator and advocate of college and youth hockey?

How about X's and O's? Besides the fact that a couple good assistants can play a major role in this area, you'd better believe he has a working knowledge - maybe almost as much as any single coach in the league - how each of the 11 run their offenses, defenses, special teams, how their tack shifts from period to period, etc. etc.

What about setting your bench, line changes, when to call a timeout, that sort of thing? Again, (and especially perhaps in his first 3-4 games out), a good assistant can be a great asset.

But what really has me convinced, now, is what I am hearing from people who have been around the game (the college game, I mean) a LONG time. I hear nothing but praise about the integrity and character this guy has, his ability to motivate and his ability to communicate and build rapport. No, this isn't just media-speak, these come from personal encounters. That's the kind of guy that I THINK can close the deal with recruits and keep current players loyal.

You say "but Michigan-Dearborn?", but I say you can't coach for 3-4 years (and be successful at it) without the subtleties of the profession coming back to you fairly quickly.

No, I think this is rather savvy. As someone put it, people really questioned Hollis when he brought in people like Suzy Merchant and Jake Boss Jr. and now these are well on their way to becomming two highly successful programs. I believe this AD really is putting a lot of emphasis on recruiting and retention, and - well the jury could still be out until, say the middle of April - but I'm looking forward to what this offseason could bring.

I admire the extended Miller family and what they have meant to MSU hockey over the last three decades. But doesn't it seem to you that there is a small amount of a sense of royalty (entitlement?) when you read about certain tweets or statements that seem nothing but hostile?

Well, I for one am glad that I don't see those tweets or other information. I've heard that some in the Miller camp(s) have been quite negative but you know what? They can then **** up a rope as far as I'm concerned. Mark my words, in three years this hire will be considered "inspired".

Re: Spartan Hockey takes a vacation; turns a page

Something to move this off Page 4 ... According to the 2011-12 schedules thread, MSU will be at Lake State Oct. 14-15. For cowards like me who are terrified of the Mackinac Bridge in perfect weather, this is a great chance to head to the UP while there's still a chance for decent weather. Who's with us?

I will make the trip to Grand Forks the week before. If you've never seen a game at Englstad, you owe it to yourself...
