Re: Sochi Olympics Results thread - SPOILERS

Wow. Just wow. Poland's Kowalcyzk wins cross-country ski race with a fractured foot.

Salute.

She's probably got a resting heart rate down around 30. As we salute her skill and fortitude, let's not forget the immortal words of that pillock of racist twaddle, Bryant Gumbel:

“Finally tonight, the Winter Games." "Count me among those who don’t like them and won’t watch them. In fact, I figure when Thomas Paine said, ‘These are the times that try men’s souls,’ he must have been talking about the start of another Winter Olympics. Because they’re so trying, maybe over the next three weeks we should all try, too. Like, try not to be incredulous when someone attempts to link these games to those of the ancient Greeks who never heard of skating or skiing. So try not to laugh when someone says these are the world’s greatest athletes, despite a paucity of blacks that makes the Winter Games look like a GOP convention.”

Bryant doesn't need to take a second run to make it to the "a*shole" podium. He's a lock.

And to get away from this, here's Tore VIKINGSTAD's hat trick from 2010: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yNik-VIgg2Y

Re: Sochi Olympics Results thread - SPOILERS

Germany not looking very good so far in this ice shuffleboard match. US could be looking at a pretty nice 3rd end here.

Re: Sochi Olympics Results thread - SPOILERS

Unusual turn of events there. US (Zezel) called for a double touch on his throw, eliminating his rock. However, the official (who was a good ways away) didn't call it until well after the shot finished up. GER stone goes back to guard spot. Shuster not pleased at all.

Re: Sochi Olympics Results thread - SPOILERS

The United States actually won a curling match. I'm in shock.

Re: Sochi Olympics Results thread - SPOILERS

Looked like things could get interesting in the final end after that, but Shuster throws a nice double on his first stone and GER concedes. 8-5 USA.

Re: Sochi Olympics Results thread - SPOILERS

Interesting. CZE-LAT hockey game: Latvia scores an even strength goal, but was initially waved off. Doesn't get reviewed until whistle which was caused by a Czech penalty. Review shows a good goal, however the referee keeps the Czech player in the penalty box, despite the penalty occurring a good bit of time after the goal.

Re: Sochi Olympics Results thread - SPOILERS

Just caught the last few of SWE - SUI game online. Swiss almost tied it in the final seconds, but lose 1-0.

Play by play by a Brit, the final was 1-nil. Guess NBC didn't know I was available.

Saw that happen at the Final Five once too. I think the rule works like that so players don't get away with dangerous plays just because a goal wasn't called at the time.

I thought only double minors and greater were called, but a quick look through the NHL's rulebook says you're right. Link

Rule 78.6: Video Review said:
...Any penalties signaled during the period of time between the apparent goal and the next stoppage of play shall be assessed in the normal manner, except when a minor penalty is to be assessed to the team scored upon, and is therefore nullified by the scoring of the goal.

Re: Sochi Olympics Results thread - SPOILERS

Johnny Weir dressing very conservatively today...

Re: Sochi Olympics Results thread - SPOILERS

But the women lose 9 - 2 in eight ends.

The women have been an absolute embarrasment. 7 in the house in one end is ridiculous from that Great Britain match.

And Brown keeps frolicking around all happy when she's getting her butt kicked every match.

The men's team actually isn't too bad, but Schuster had been struggling in the early matches. He's played better today and hopefully he can keep it going. If we can win this match against Russia will be in okay shape.

Ya, it ended up being the correct decision, but the players and coaches both were talking with him about it. At intermission, it was basically explained that a penalty is a penalty, is a penalty. Major, minor, misconduct, all are called regardless of review decision.

Just had never seen that happen before, and it was a minor penalty, so I was skeptical as well.
