Sochi 2014: From Russia With Love

Re: Sochi 2014: From Russia With Love

Huh. Just learned one of the USA women Slopestyle competitors is the daughter of a high school classmate. She's kinda a hottie too. ;)

The faucets in Sochi dispense beer?!?!?! I should book a ticket now!

Wait, what?

Re: Sochi 2014: From Russia With Love

Only six of the nine media hotels in Sochi are finished. However, they were smart about it. NBC got the best accommodations so we won't hear any horror stories on the air.

Of the highlights thus far:
Two reporters from CBC were assigned to a room and upon arrival found that the second bet had no sheets, as they were taken away for cleaning. The semen-covered bed however, was not.
NBC News did a piece on cyber security, and within a minute their smartphone had been hacked and malware installed allowing the other use to listen to phone calls and log keystrokes.
Hotel guests are warned not to flush their toilet paper, but to put it in the bucket provided.
Also, the water has a brownish/yellowish tint to it and "contains something dangerous" so hotel guests are warned not to drink it.
Trenni Kusnierek (@trenni on twitter) told Toucher & Rich this morning about a hotel lobby that was unfinished, so people had to go to the owner of the hotel (who was living in one of the rooms) to check in. The lobby, although unfinished, did have several pictures of Putin on the walls. She also told about the Cultural Center that was only a skeleton, so the event organizers put up a tarp painted so that it looks like a completed building. Oh, and the Canadian and American Olympic Houses are not finished yet, and still have scaffolding outside. Maybe the buildings will be done in time for the 2018 World Cup.
Dan Wetzel just posted a picture of three lightbulbs that he would trade for a door knob for his hotel room. He wasn't kidding.
Oh, and why White pulled out:
Shaun White just pulled out of the new snowboarding event because the course is so dangerous people are breaking bones.

There are many Deadspin and other threads with pictures from Sochi.

Stamkos not cleared to play in Sochi. I would hate to be Stevie Y and possibly approaching Marty St. Louis with my tail tucked between my legs.

Cool article about the number of hockey olympians from Southern CT.

I've lived in several states, and CT is the first one of those that has high school hockey statewide. They still have a Hartford Whalers lottery scratch game, even though the Whalers deserted CT for warmer climes back in 1997.

Re: Sochi 2014: From Russia With Love

You couldn't PAY me to go to Sochi.

Oh, and one journalist in the Omega hotel complex had to refuse a colleague's request to stay a night in the second twin bed because … well, there's no easy way to say this, but when the first journalist arrived, someone had left an indeterminate amount of semen on the sheets of the second bed, and those sheets had been taken away for cleaning, and hadn't come back.
Lovely.

This is fantastic:
If $51 billion is being spent, I expect to be able to flush a canned ham down the toilet.
