Was the SL cop a tall (6' 5") guy ? If so, it was my son who was working that night ... I have given him strict instructions to leave SLU people alone.

PS...on the issue of attendance. I know Brenda tracked tickets sold but let's just say the attendance number was a guesstimate since no one really tracks how many students, faculty, freebies come in.

The capacity can't be much more than a guess either. It's been listed at 3,200 since the place opened. In that time, the ice was lengthened, taking out a bunch of seats, the player benches have been reconfigured, taking out more seats, TV towers have taken out a few more. Most significant, the upper walk around was essentially removed. I remember Clarkson and Cornell games as a kid where every seat was filled and the crowd would be three and four deep standing at the rails all the way around. That's where the 3,200 capacity comes from but you can't do that anymore.

I went to Appleton last year for two games (QPac, Princeton) for the first time in about 20 years. All the upgrades were really impressive but I was surprised that late in the season of a good year, the place was not filled up. There were far fewer students than there used to be (even during the lean 70's years) and they were all ghettoed off into one section.

You have to wonder if pressing the thumb down on even a minor marketing campaign to push attendance wouldn't make a difference. I was at a dinner in San Francisco with the SLU admissions department a couple of weeks ago. They asked for suggestions on how to better attract kids from Fort Drum. I suggested that a good way would be to run busses to Appleton on Friday and Saturday nights from the base. Even if they give seats away, the place would fill up and Appleton is definitely better set up to sell hamburgers and t-shirts than they used to be.

Its was great to see SLU get a couple wins last weekend, now we are going to see if we can maintain some level of consistency. Hopefully the boys will continue to play with the same heart, resolve, and desire they demonstrated last weekend. After taking a glance at the beginning of their schedule, certain things popped out. Of their first six opponents, 4 are currently ranked in the top 25. Cornell must have a lot of pull to remain there at 1-3 Minnesota State is not, but plays in a tough conference and has been confronted by a few ranked teams already. Our team defense is ranked 17th in the nation and we are currently tied for ninth in the Penalty kill. Matt Weninger is 13th overall as a net minder. If you believe in the old adage that defense wins championships, this certainly is a good start. Sean Flanagan is also on the national radar by joining the top 50 scoring leaders and Kyle is not far behind. If they can get the offense to roll, good things could come. The team has hung tough with every opponent (4 OT games) and with their record; they are only being outscored 20-22. Majority of these games were on the road as well. Seems like the building blocks are there, just a matter of putting them all together.

I'll be at both this weekend. About to make the trek from NYC to hunt back home, and it's only ~30 minutes from our hunting camp to Appleton. Hopefully another sweep is in the cards.

First off I just wanted to say Dan I am very sorry for your loss and my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

My first post in quite some time on here. I am very excitied this year. I know every year we seen to lose this guy and that one and wonder who will step up. So far I am nothing short of amazed again at how the Saints always manage to pull together. Again this year the hustle and determination stands out. We have some great returners and some great freshman. I'm glad to see Sean skating with Kyle out there. I'm sure that has to be a lot of fun and makes for some more great memories for those two. Lots of work to do on this busy Friday. But everyone enjoy the weekend and the games for those of you who are heading out to them GO SAINTS!!!

Tough loss for the Saints last night. Sounded like a combination of things the most of which was running into a hot goalie.
My picks in the ECAC contest are proving to be really bad this year. I had Harvard picked at the bottom. I think most of it was because I think Harvard is Sullivan's team but I also thought that goaltending aside........Harvard losing LeBlanc and based on their team would have no offense. Guess you can never count out a hot goalie.

I only listened and didn't see the game and I'd be curious for any live in game reports of those who watched or were there.

I'm hoping Dartmouth tired themselves out last night against Clarkson with those 50 plus shots on goal.

Nobody, to my knowledge, ever got after Joe. I'm virtually certain that there was no behind the scenes stuff either. There better not have been.

I think that the one thing that the angry CCT natives and alums. are overlooking is injuries. CCT was absolutely decimated with injuries last season and, like SLU, the injuries are also mounting this season in Potsdam. No coach on earth can control the amount and extent of injuries. There's a lot of luck, or lack thereof, in that regard.

As for last night's game, SLU's comeback in the third was impressive. There's no quit in this injury-plagued team and that bodes well for the future.

No one would ever "go after" Joe. He is the face of our program and one of the most respected coaches in college hockey. Yes there have been some lean years but the reality was the lack of being able to offer scholarships like the other programs. Even with that Coach Marsh has always fielded a hard working and never say die attitude program. Us Saints fans are very passsionate about our program as much so as the Clarkson faithful. However we would never say nor would we have a single negative word to express about Joe. We believe in Coach Marsh and the program, forever and always.

First, about last nights game. SLU dominated the first and third and I truly mean dominated. They came out of the 1st down 1-0 nevertheless. Harvard got a huge goal to go up 2-0 which Weninger wants back. He was off on his angles and was just a bad goal. They got the third on a good shot off a faceoff...we got killed on faceoffs all night (paging Bogo). I think down 3-0 there was a touch of "we can't do this". Then we got one goal and a second and it became SLU dominating again as we pressed for the third. We just had about 10 bad minutes in the third....and that was the difference. We didn't seem to have the jump or passion that I saw in both games last week, but we weren't bad either. Actually, the line that maybe played the best in the third was Pitsi-Vangog-Army....couple of great shifts. Baker continues to impress. He made one move on a rush followed by a nice pass that was just ridiculous.

As for the woes at Tech and Marsh. NEVER would that happen. The loyalty to Joe and his philosophy is extremely deep both with the administration and the alums. Even if we only won 4 games a year, he still represents the university with class and by and large his teams do too. That is more important than anything else for most of us. He has also won 5 ECAC titles too and been to the Frozen Four twice which is pretty good sustained success for a small market program. I mean, we compete against the Ivies lure and the new big time rinks at Q-Pac (although why anyone would want to play for Pecknold still baffles me)!! Clarkson does too, but I think engineering helps them. Anyway, my point is at SLU it is and always has been about more than hockey. Our teams always show a good work ethic, effort and attitude. I have only witnessed a few huge duds in 25 years of following the Saints....last year at Maine being one.

It is looking more like Roll's goose is cooked and I think that is unfortunate. I think he is a good guy and I think it is less his fault that a lot of other factors. But, the results the last 2 years and this year have not been good. They did win the ECAC three years ago though. Obviously, the discipline trouble with those kids at summer camp, the losses and the embarrassing losses like last night....they add up. All I say is when Roll gets gassed you better not try to recruit anyone from our staff. I think Clarkson should look at promoting Matt DesRochers and let his wife coach the Women's program. He is already on the dark side and I think would be an asset to the program. I just think this is a bigger hole that Clarkson is used to and it will take some solid work and seasons to dig out of it....and I say that feeling strongly that Clarkson was NOT a 12 place team last year and is a good team this year too. We are still digging out from the bad years in the mid-90's and from 5 years ago.

Joe will retire when he is ready. If he were ever pushed or the heat turned up with him I think there would be some senior people at the University answering to angry alums with their jobs.

But the Penn State job is the #1 enchilada out there. You got to figure that every D-I #1 Assistant/Associate and Junior A coach is tightening up the resume and who knows maybe some head coach looking to move up in the world.

Morris was only a Saint guy when you were winning. When you lost and when he got gassed he was a Colgate guy! I think you would have a hard time getting Prier or Hurley or Wells. They are real Saints and that is pretty deep in their bones. And, there is nothing wrong with any of them....all three of them are awesome. I have this sneaking suspicion someone like Schaefer could end up at Penn State. I agree, that is going to be a plum job and there will be a lot of applicants. However, I have pretty solid inside information that the guys on the Saint staff are pretty happy where they are.

My guess would be never.......what a lost weekend for us though. At least you guys saved some face tonight. We have played close games all year so I am hoping tonight was an anomaly. Weninger has looked strong all year but last night you guys gave up 7 goals on 50 something shots. We gave up 6 on way less than 30. NOT GOOD!!!!!

I realize we are pretty dinged up with some key players out but we now go on the road FOREVER and this weekend was our best chance to pick up a couple of points.

We got to 2-1 and then the ECAC refs went at it again....did not disagree with most of the calls all night but that was NOT interference on Stratford that gave them a PP to go up 3-1 and that was the game. If we had got the 4th goal to tie it up at 2-2, think the game could have gone the other way. That was a bad call. We took some bad penalties tonight and that killed us. Didn't agree with the holding on M. Raley either, he got position. I also thought Dartmouth was guilty of a lot of interference by just grabbing and hauling guys down as we went to the net. You put your destiny in the hands of ECAC officials though and rarely will it end well.

Bottom line though for both nights was we had an inability to score. So many shots were into traffic that never got through. We missed at least two wide open nets.

I can't imagine a young team looking better than they did against Cornell and Colgate. This weekend, the wheels fell off the wagon and it is hard to imagine us looking worse. LOTS of bad turnovers in our zone by all kinds of players. I don't really fault Weninger on any of the GA....they were good goals. Ughhh....frustrating. We can play better than that and we better start, consistently, doing so.

Well, it was not a good night against Dartmouth but nobody said this was going to be easy. Let's hope that we can regroup and do well on the road trip of the century.
