SLU - Summer of 2010

Re: SLU - Summer of 2010

I don't know. I think tonight's game vs. St. Lawrence will probably be 'Gate's toughest conference game of the year, as it always is. It'll be a chance for the Raiders to prove their mettle. I'd be happy with a tie so that the team can salvage a split for the weekend, which is always something good to take out of the NC, but given our historical record at Appleton...well good luck and may it be a well-played game on both sides as the games last season were, although the final scores were a bit too one-sided in my opinion...:)

Re: SLU - Summer of 2010

If anyone is interested in picking up an SLU jersey there is an on line auction going to raise money for a team equipment manager who is in dire need. There are many college and some pro jersey's shown many with autographs at the following link: http://server2.maxanet.com/cgi-bin/mnlist.cgi?oberman2/category/JERSEY

Some of the autographed one's seem to be going for what are currently bargain prices. (Less than $200 for most). The SLU jersey is an older version with Spadaccini on the nameplate.

Re: SLU - Summer of 2010

Congrats to the Saints on the ECAC weekend sweep.

Just looked at the box score and was surprised by the attendence at the game. That got my looking at the other home games and I was like wow. Appleton has a capacity of 3,200. Regular season home games thus far have been:

10/22 – 1,521
10/23 – 1,562
11/5 – 1,908
11/6 – 1,423

This seems very low. Can someone fill me in on whats going on with the crowd in Canton??? This appears to be an issue that will/should or maybe is being addressed. Thanks.

Re: SLU - Summer of 2010

Yeah there is definately something wrong with the box score numbers then because the crowd both nights this weekend was near capacity. Not sure where they are getting the numbers from.

Re: SLU - Summer of 2010

For starters, Appleton's capacity is no where near 3,200. That's if everyone is packed in tight, including standing room only and I would doubt it's 3,200 at that point.
Clarkson/SLU playoff last year didn't draw over 2,000 in any game. The capacity number is wrong, plain and simple.

The attendance reported may exclude students, who get in for free, and thus don't need a ticket. So the attendance is tickets sold.

Also, videos are up on the blog along with my game story, which will appear in the newspaper Sunday.

Hmm, well it would be interesting to hear how SLU is calculating attendence and if it is consistent in doing so. If you look at SLU's exhibition game to start this season they list attendence for that game as 3,450. Do folks recall that game busting Appleton at the seams? It seems hard to imagine an exhibition game would outdraw at SLU/Clarkson playoff game. I will say if you look at the SLU/Clarkson game of Dec 4th of last year it is 2,850.

There was a decent crowd there, but NO WAY was there 3450. probably closer to 2200-2700

Re: SLU - Summer of 2010

Well, what a great weekend for the Skating Saints! Nice job boys collecting wins against Cornell (19th in the country) and Colgate. This series seemed to hurt Mr. Sullivan's predictions. Great to hear that Weninger went 2-0 with making 60 of 61 saves. He continually seems to be building confidence and playing stronger. Nice to also see that the Flanagans were big contributors and that Wick collected a couple goals over the weekend. This is what we needed, some of the younger guys to step it up and fill in the voids left in the wake of so many injuries. I am still looking forward to being able to attend my first game of the season. Can't wait to see these guys in action. Go Saints Go

I don't want to get too excited, because they do have a lot of new faces, and it's a long season. But there's a lot to like about this team, and I think we've got a couple of fun seasons ahead of us.

If memory's correct, I believe students from both schools were on break during that playoff series. Nonetheless, I was surprised to see so many empty seats then.

Great weekend by the Saints. Sounds like everyone played with tons of energy and the guys really stepped up. This first-year class is really good and will only get better. The true test will be the road trip from hell that will soon be upon us (is it 12 of 13 games on the road?) Ouch.

Go Saints.

Re: SLU - Summer of 2010

Great week-end for our Saints. If these kids stay for their four years it's going to be a fun time to be a Saint fan.I'd watched Baker on some of his team clips last year and I believe your going to see more of his end to end rushes as the season wears on, he had a couple this week-end and almost put one in, he just loves to rush and I think your going to see coach Marsh let him go.I believe that this is one of the most talented classes in the last ten years. We all knew that Carey could score but I don't think I've seen anyone get the velocity on their shots with such a short windup as he does, just unbelieveable---that means that there are going to be a lot of rebounds for his linemates to pounce on.I knew that Wick was supposed to be good but this good??????he hits anything that moves and they are good hard legits hits.In the Cornell game he had the big Red going into the corners looking over their shoulder by mid second period. They played two up-tempo games in a row and that takes a lot out of a body.Over the years I've seen them play like that on Friday night and come out Sat. with nothing and I mean nothing, so we'll wait and see but right now I like what I see.
About the attendance, I'm not sure how or who they count but I do know that the first game had one of the largest crowds that I'd seen in years,I do think there was an alum. event going on that week-end to account for some of it.
One last question, my wife saw Hughes go off on a shift change late in the third favoring one leg and she didn't see him back on ,any one got anything on this?
All in all a great week-end,some diferent than in Lake Placid. First we lost in overtime, second picked up in Saranac doing 55 mph. before I was completely out of a 40 zone, third- got down to Paul Smiths and started losing my power steering on our Toyota Highlander but could of been worse, The village cop let me off, my neighbor machanic fixed my line to the power steering pump and no damage to the pump but I couldn't fix the game.

Was it just past the hospital? If so, my dad and I were right behind you. Glad to hear you got a pass on that though.

Re: SLU - Summer of 2010

Yes, I also saw Hughes go down in the third against Colgate with about 2-3 minutes left. The Colgate player was on top of him and he went hard into the end boards. He got off the ice, but looked to be in pain. Hopefully, it is nothing. he is a player we can not afford to lose.

Obviously, there is lots to love about this Freshmen class, actually the same is true for the Sophomore class....heck, Kyle Flanagan and George Hughes are going to be All-ECAC players for certain, and guys like Dewey, Stratford, Dyer all can play and contribute in their own ways. But this Freshmen class, every time you turn around there is another guy bringing something important to the table. You have the two way player in Essery who throws some good hits for a smaller player. You got Vangog who is just getting to skate and use his size better and he had a few good scoring chances based on just his reach and size/strength. You had Pat Raley who is clearly strong as an ox just unload a few bombs as shots, you have Riley Austin who is a big strong kid with some offensive upside, you have Sean Logue who can fly and play the body and plays with the same reckless abandon as Wick, you have Wick (yes, I think they knew how good he could be) who is a great hitter and has good skills and can play any skating position including defense (in game one at MSU they were literally afraid of him by the middle of game one), you have Carey who is a player that is deadly inside the circles and also made some good plays defensively as well as two gorgeous passes (at least) to Kyle, then there is Weninger who is very sound positionally and light on his skates and moves quickly for a big body...I said it an email and I am no longer hesitant to say it....I think this is the best freshmen class in the league. Then, of course, there is Baker....there were flashes this weekend that brought a smile to my face. He is so good it is scary. He moves the puck well, skates well, has great skill, but it is the little things like the short passes out of the zone, the vision on the ice, the rushes are great but the passes at the end were ridiculous. He already reminds me of Hughes but has the potential to be even more flashy and offensive. There are no duds. I see every one of them contributing in important ways.

As for this weekend....you can't ask for more. The energy was good. The finish was good on our chances and we could have had several more both nights. The chemistry on the lines looked great. The effort was there. We were first to the puck, we were winning battles, we played solid fundamentally with everyone finishing their checks. All I can say is I'll take more of that. That was fun to watch. No panic. Great effort. Some beautiful plays.

Congrats to the boys on a great weekend. Let's hope we can do it again this weekend and build off it. Regardless, great result especially considering a few of our leaders and biggest contributors in Child, Bogo and Keller were all out.

Re: SLU - Summer of 2010

PS...on the issue of attendance. I know Brenda tracked tickets sold but let's just say the attendance number was a guesstimate since no one really tracks how many students, faculty, freebies come in. There are several doors for people to come in and plus everyone that buys tickets (season tix) shows up for every game so even ticket sales are not all that accurate. The numbers this weekend were low, but to me all that matters is if there is good energy and noise in the building and it feels full enough....and it clearly seemed like that this weekend. For those that didn't show up....you missed out....that was fun to watch.

Re: SLU - Summer of 2010

Now that the ECAC season has officially begun, and DST officially ended, isn't time for a new thread? Or is it still Indian Summer?
