SLU - Summer of 2010

Re: SLU - Summer of 2010

JoeCCT,
The truth of the matter is that the majority of these players are going to go pro in something other than hockey. Just like the commercial states about all Div. I, II, and III athletes. It is nice to see that Coach Marsh is able to get some players into Canton that are recognized across the Nation. This can only help the program by making the college more recognizable to future players. I agree that "Hard work beats talent when talent doesn't work hard." This is a phrase that I use quite often among others in coaching. It has also played true for a few of our previous SLU teams.

Well Guys,

It is great that the Saints are finally on Home ice. Mr. Sullivan has picked us for a split over the weekend on the ECAC site. It is also nice to hear that a few of the players will be back, but it looks like we are another week from having the squad back to full strength. I would like to give a big hand to Dan Cassavaugh and his Casstle of the Saints column. His coverage has been FANtastic! Wish I could make it the North Country for the series, but I have coaching duties so, Go Saints Go!

Well, WMU wins game 3-1 with an ENG. While it's great that we are finally at home, what's up with CCHA Officials in our barn? All I know is that we had just 3 powerplays and WMU had seven. I guess a good question is whether ECAC refs. are ever allowed in CCHA or WCHA barns? I doubt it.

I try not to yap about refs. too much, but tonight's officiating has me really angered. Home ice turned into a disadvantage as I perceive it. Am curious to hear posts from those who were at the game.

Well, the Yankees are all but dead. All of my teams except one, from HS to college to pros, are all losing this season and/or of late. And, the Football Giants will likely follow suit on Monday night in Dallas. Getting too old for this losing stuff:).

Go Saints.

Maybe WMU heard how bad our ECAC refs were and only agreed to come here with their own refs!!!! Nothing would surprise me. I realize we are young and learning but we have to get a "W" here pretty soon!!! Hope it's tomorrow night. It's nice to see that Pisellini is back playing college hockey. I know he left Q Pac to be close to his father who was seriously ill. I wish him well.

Like Brian, I am curious for live reports from those at the game and will look for Dan's wrap up.

I changed my cable package from Comcast last week....not sure what package I switched to but I am getting all these extra college hockey games I never got before. One one channel they had the Minnesota game and right now I am watching Denver/Wisconsin.

Re: SLU - Summer of 2010

The story and video interview with Greg Carey is up on the web. Not sure who I should do for Get to Know a Saint this week, any idea?
http://watertowndailytimes.com/section/blogs05

Thanks as always for the links.....the video's, etc.

As for get to know a Saint you have a ton of new freshman to run through. I myself am curious about the W's.....Wick and Weninger who is getting all the time in goal. I think there might be a story there too!! I thought we would see more goalie rotation early in the year......what's up with Moss??? Is he hurt or is Weninger the guy already?? You could also ask Matt Weninger what it's like to play in Flin Flon, Manitoba (home to Bobby Clarke and Ken Baumgartner). Take a look at a map. All the roads end there......I'm not sure you can even go north from there.
As for other interviews everyone keeps talking about how whacked out Jordan Dewey is so you might as well get him on there!!!
As the season goes on if you run out of subjects it would always be nice to acquaint the fans with some of the coaches as well.

On yeah and one more thing........GO GIANTS!!!!!! (San Francisco that is lest anyone be confused!!!!)

Yeah, you're going to have to go ahead and look in the mirror for your officiating faults this weekend.

No thanks. Can't do that with ECAC officials because it frequently ends in a vomiting session. I simply do not understand how ECAC officials can suck so bad, but they do. Flipside, we go on the road to the WCHA and the officiating was extremely competent. I wonder when was the last time there was a NC pair of games in a CCHA barn and the visiting team from the ECAC got almost twice as many power plays BOTH nights. Personally, I'll never forget playing at WMU in 1987-1988 when SLU went into the 3rd leading 6-1 and lost 7-6 in OT and played the last 20+ minutes literally short two men the entire time. Most night in the ECAC, it is the ECAC team more heavily penalized by their own officials.

I didn't watch the whole game on Saturday, but I will say that I don't know how WMU's 2nd goal should have counted. The WMU player ran the goalie and the puck into the net in the process.

Bottomline, we got too many penalties this weekend and gave up too many goals without scoring enough of our own. Definitely a disappointing first home series. But, give credit to WMU...I think they are better than where they were picked in the CCHA.

I already did Dewey: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nMLIeZLr1co
I'll try to get Weninger this week. He has a full family, including an infant child, so he could be quite interesting. Do you have any questions for him?

Also, I've posted a video of Doug Weaver building his pregame puck art for the team. It's become a ritual with St. Lawrence.

Just saw where SLU picked up Ross McMullan, a 6'5 205 -D-man from Springfield {EJHL} for next year---

Yes, I stand corrected on that one. Just after the end of Saturday's game,. I spoke with one of the guys who was at both games and he said that they were ECAC Refs. and that both games were fairly officiated in his opinion. Associate Coach Bob Prier's comments in today's WDT regarding penalties were, ""Guys have to understand what a penalty is and what a penalty isn't," said associate head coach Bob Prier. "We have to stop doing it. Some of the penalties we took were absolutely absurd." So, the penalties were deserved and CCHA Official were not present.

As for the Saints and despite the slow start, I see plenty to be encouraged by. Unless Moss is hurt, it appears that we have found a great goalie for the next four years. Carey is going to fill a lot of nets before all's said and done. Wick hits everybody in sight and does so cleanly. I could go on and on here with reasons for being encouraged. I just hope that Jared Keller is OK because that's all that really matters.

On the recruiting front, Chris Heisenberg reported today that Defenseman Ross McMullan from Springfield of the EJHL is heading to SLU. He lists him at 6'5" tall and 205 lbs. I am not sure if he is incoming in 2011 or 2012.

Looking forward to seeing many of you this coming weekend.

Go Saints

Hopefully this big boy will actually make it to campus and play as opposed to the last big dude we signed who went pro before he even got to Canton!!!!! ;)

Re: SLU - Summer of 2010

Congrats to Greg Carey for being named ECAC RotW for his hattie Saturday. RPI fans are up in arms for Higgs not getting it, and arguably so as he had 3 goals and an assist, including 2 GWG's this weekend between the two games, however both had great weekends.

Re: SLU - Summer of 2010

Hey guys,

I have injury updates, the weekly podcast and Get to Know a Saint with Matt Weninger up on the blog: http://watertowndailytimes.com/section/blogs05

I will not be traveling with the team to Lake Placid this weekend. The newspaper is only sending one beat writer to the game, and Cap Carey (Clarkson's beat) gets the gig. I'll spend it listening on the radio.

Sorry you won't be there Dan. There are about 10 of us (most from Tupper Lake area) going to the game. I drove up from CT last night. Can't belive for an SLU/Clarkson game we have no chatter, boasts or posts.......it's not like the old days I guess. Tonight will be my first look in person at this year's team. I can't wait.

Good luck to the Saints tonight.......we'll be cheering wildly and my guess is most of the crew will be well "oiled" for the cheering (although I am going to stay on the straight and narrow and watch the Union/RPI game as well.....I'll also be one of a couple of designated drivers!!!!)

Re: SLU - Summer of 2010
