SLU - Summer of 2010

Re: SLU - Summer of 2010

Well, a decent game and just the kind of battle you want for your first game. We played pretty well. Some very positive points, also some major bummers.

The Flanagan-Bogo line played great. The Freshmen line played great and I LOVE Wick. Clean player, crushes kids, plays hard. MSU was afraid of him by the end of the night.

But the bad news is there are two kids down with concussions. Baker is one on that ugly hit from behind. A true cheap shot. The second may be the end of the career for Jared Keller who got hit and broke his helmet in the first. I didn't see it. It was at the other end. VERY, VERY SAD for the kid....absolutely heartbreaking after last season.

I'll post more later on the thoughts of the game. MSU is a good team. They have speed and some skill.

The ice was really bad, undoubtedly made worse by the heat today, I think both teams were tired by the end of the night but we looked moreso thanks to Raley getting booted in the first period, losing Baker and Keller in the second. We finished the game with four d-men and broken forward lines. Highlight of the game was the play Drewiske made getting the puck to Mobley...very pretty goal.

Oh man, I really really hope Keller can continue playing, that would be horrible if he has to hang them up.

Glad to hear things looked good. Gotta agree on Wick, he was a blast to watch last weekend against Carleton.

Re: SLU - Summer of 2010

Well, it just so happens his dad's name is Ron Spadaccini...so one can assume until it is confirmed by Mrs. Spadaccini!:p

Just to get the whole genealogy of this D-1 Canton hockey family on the record, the current and only Mrs. Ron Spadacini (I know of) was Carol Coakley who with Ron, were high school sweethearts in my class at Canton High. Ron did play for Colgate from '74-'78 and Joe is their son.

Carol Coakley Spadacini's brothers are Tom Coakley and Bill Coakley, who both played for Brown in the mid-sixties. Bill Coakley was also recruited by the six women in my freshman class to be the original coach of the SLU women's team they launched in '74.

Tom Coakley, who lost a leg in Vietnam and is featured in Tom Brokaw's book "BOOM" is the father of former Saint goalie, Sean Coakley -- making Sean, Joe Spadacini's first cousin.

In any case, I'm sure it was a thrill for Joe to start and for his extended Canton family to watch him play in a Saint uniform at Appleton last week.

In our next lesson, we'll examine the Flanagan family ;)

With Jared, I am sure hoping for the best but kind of expecting the worse. I hope he is fine! I pray actually. That just would be awful for the kid and the team. I'll let you all know if I hear anything definitive.

Pretty sure we will see Weninger, Dyer and / or Austin and Logue and / or Vangog tonight. We'll see. Some fresh legs would be good. Ice was awful last night and it is a big sheet. The guys looked tired in the third so a tie was really welcome.

Re: SLU - Summer of 2010

Welcome Back Sean Flanagan! What a GREAT game for his first back. Two goals and two assists, that is exactly what the Dr. ordered. Sounds like the boys worked hard all night, but just couldn't quite put the Mavericks away. Hopefully the Saints can win their first of the season tonight. Would be great to get one on the road. Go Saints Go

I'll be praying for Jared as well. Wally mentioned in the third that Jared wasn't on the ice and thought that he might be injured. This kind of injury puts things into perspective and I'm hoping for the best.

We're going to need many wins on the road this year, as we "only" have 18 regular season road games left (CCT in LP being neutral ice).

I'm thinking of heading to Big Rapids on Thursday, returning on Sunday. If anybody wants to meet me at or near Johnstown or points west and head out there with me in my car (it has plenty of room for 3-4 others), please let me know. The only thing I'll ask for is that those, if any, who might join me do the driving (a Jeep Commander) - I'll cover gas and tolls. We'll all need paperwork to easily get through Customs as I'll be taking the route through Ontario if I go. Will need to decide by Thurs. 9:00 AM as I'll need time to get to DMV to purchase the license that will expedite getting into and out of Ontario (am assuming NYS issues those immediately once you pony up).

Re: SLU - Summer of 2010

A few more thoughts on the game....

First, something I wish I could say about ECAC hockey but so rarely find it appropriate, the officiating was very good. Maybe a few more they could have called each way...I actually think Pat Raley got hit from behind in the third, but it was very even, they made the right calls when they needed to, it was even and they didn't stick it to the visitors as you sometimes expect in the WCHA, CCHA or, actually, any league other than the ECAC where familiarity breeds contempt and they stick it to the ECAC team. Didn't have the angle to see Matt Raley's major but was told that it was a good call because he had his arm up and pushed the kid into the boards....from where I was it looked like hip on hip.

Goaltending....first the ice was awful for both teams. You could tell it was soft and the puck was bouncing a bit. Moss made some incredible stops, especially in OT, and he had maybe a couple of goals that he would want back. He seemed back in his net for a couple...hopefully, he adjusts on that and plays with some more confidence. They came out hungry in the third and kind of caught us standing around. Their goalie had no chance on most of them. A very good job by our D-Men to get pucks through for deflections and some beautiful passes especially S. Flanny to Bogo and Drewiske to Mobley.

D - Hard to tell a lot considering we lost Matt Raley five minutes in and Baker got injured in the middle of the second and didn't return. Everyone else played well. Hughes and Child are a solid pair and Hughes just gets better and better. Was really impressed with Pat Raley. Not flashy, but covers the ice well, makes smart plays, can drill the puck and is strong as an ox.....all of our D had some tough stretches in the third, but I think they were gassed and some are just learning. Pat had some very nice hits and one beautiful hip check, but also struggled a few times at D. Jordan Dewey is not even recognizable from the same player a year ago. So much better...skating better, passing better...in one years time I would say he is the most improved.

Forwards the Bogo -Flanny squared line was extremely good and they pretty well dominated when they were on the ice. They compliment each other well. Kyle can sure make plays. The line of Carden - Drewiske and Mobley got better as the game went on. They made some nice plays and got a beautiful goal. I'd say they were about 50/50 in terms of zone time. The freshmen line of Essery, Wick and Carey was dominating at times and also got hemmed in at times....kind of what you expect from Freshmen I guess. They make smart plays. Carey had the puck deflected over his stick or he could have had a couple. He is just in the right place a lot. (Noticed his old linemate Jooris had a hatrick for Union last night). Wick....just a good clean, honest player that hits everything skates well and has good skills. Essery is a very solid two way player. It says something that these guys were on the ice with 1.5 minutes left in the game. They will put up some points and deliver some exciting hockey. The Pitsi - Armstrong - Keller line had some good shifts and some rough shifts. But I give them a pass because their line was broken with Keller's injury. I actually thought Army played a pretty strong game, but clearly that line had some struggles.

All in all, a great first game. We got some nice special teams play going 3 for 4 to start (ended 3 for 5, I think). We got a very nice kill on the major to Raley. We played with the lead, we came from behind, we battled in OT. Other than the injuries, I'd be happy with the tie. Given the fact we were short handed and the ice was soft, we should run out of there and be thankful for the tie. MSU has some very good players and they skate well. They looked young too, but they have some talent. Even though that is my take away, we did have some good chances to win it in both regulation and OT. A very good, even, battle is a nice game on the road at this time of the season. I think MSU might come after us a bit tonight more than they did. Tonight should be tougher and tighter...we'll see how it goes.

I sure hope for good news with Keller. That just is not fair if he is injured. Hoping it is just a scare. This is the part of the game I don't like. Keep your fingers crossed for him. Baker I think will be fine. When he got hit I thought "oh crap" but seeing him after the game I wouldn't be surprised if he plays tonight. He actually came back out to start the third but did not play. Glad he seems to be alright, he did get drilled squarely into the boards on a cheap shot....guys have to let up in that situation. It could have been a lot worse. He can play too though. Moves the puck well and makes good decisions.

That is it. It is hot and humid here again and thunderstorming at the moment. This weekend last year it snowed in Omaha. Not really sure why Mankato feels like Phoenix, but it does.

Let's hope for a win tonight.

Joe mentioned in the pregame with Mankato's radio team that Keller does indeed have a concussion, but "felt pretty well" today. He also did mention several times that this may be the end of the road, but that decision will be made sometime in the future.

Baker is back in the lineup tonight, Weninger starting in net.

Lineup:

Flanagan, Bogo, Flanagan
Drewiske Mobley Carden
Wick Carey Essery
Logue Armstrong Vangog

Hughes Child
Baker Raley
Austin Dyer

Re: SLU - Summer of 2010

Nice weekend for the Saints. Good showing by Weninger between the pipes and a nice welcome back for Sean Flanagan. We will see what the boys can do next weekend vs Ferris St. Tough to start with two huge road trips. Looking forward to seeing that first win.

I talked briefly to Jared. He said he felt good which is great to hear. It would be great if he were cleared to play and had a great year of success on the ice. Just hoping for the best for him. Would never want there to be any kind of permanent damage. Just a tough break for him. He said he went in for a hit and missed and hit his head against the boards. He sure remembers it clearly which is a good sign.

Not only did Baker play but he was playing some great hockey. He is getting better every shift. He reminds me a lot of Hughes already and his vision on the ice is exceptional.

Weninger did play a great game. He really is light on his skates and his lateral movement is great. Saturday was a much tighter, tougher, up tempo game. The only bad news from the night was we lost both Logue and Wick early in the first. Not sure exactly what happened to them. Logue was limping so it is probably a charley horse or bruise from going into the boards full speed. Wick I think just got hurt hitting the dasher. Don't know if they will miss any games...it is a quick week for them as they get back tonight at 9 and leave for Ferris on Weds at 2.

Lots of positives in my mind. We had 8 freshmen in the lineup on Saturday and they all looked good. A few have a bit to work on, but still looked good out there. Essery is a great player at both ends of the ice. He did a nice job on the PK. Ferris will be a tough test. Here's hoping for a successful weekend in Big Rapids with no injuries!

All good stuff to hear, Leckster. Most of what you mentioned I also saw against Carleton regarding Baker, Weninger, etc. Essery almost reminded me of a Vermuelen type of player when I was at the Carleton game, if I had to compare him to anybody of recent memory. God knows we would love him to develop and fill those shoes.

He definitely reminds me a bit of Verm too. He actually seems to be a bit more of an offensive play maker than Travis but Travis was one of the best ever at winning battles for the puck....he was badger like when trying to win possession of the puck and, God Forbid, if he ever got it taken away. TV was definitely a better defensive player than Essery is right now, but I see that potential. Essery is a bit bigger, a good skater and seems to be responsible at both ends. I can see that freshmen line being quite productive.

Other than some injuries, I thought it was a great weekend and the types of games that will really help us down the road. There was practically no BS after the whistle and MSU seemed well-coached.

FSU will be a tough test for us. Hope guys can get healthy and have a couple of good practices before their LONG bus ride.

Just glad Baker was all right. He did get hit pretty hard and squarely into the boards. He made some great plays on Saturday. Everyone on the Bogo line impressed me this weekend. I can't say enough about Kyle F's passing ability, decision making and puck control....really impressive.

Agreed that, all in all, it was a great weekend. Injuries were the only real bummer.

I know it's early but my initial impressions are that there is a lot to like about this team. The guys really work hard and the talent level has been underestimated IMO. If nothing else, this will be an extremely road tested team come playoff time and playing in an opponents barn, if needed, shouldn't be a factor.

On to Ferris St.

Re: SLU - Summer of 2010

Hey guys,

A couple things of note:
1. I spoke briefly with Jared Keller yesterday at practice. He said he felt good, although he had a slight headache. He is visiting with doctors Wednesday and Thursday to get reevaluated. Keller said that he felt pretty good. I asked him point-blank if his career was over. He replied: "I'm not done yet."
2. Bobby Torney has a bit more serious shoulder injury than initially thought. In my weekly interview with Joe Marsh, he said Torney will be out for a while. The podcast of the entire interview is available on the blog.
3. This week's "Get to Know a Saint" is now available. I spoke with Jacob Drewiske.

It was a terrific weekend. Lots of positives. The new kids made a lot of freshmen mistakes but they are fixable. It was a very solid first weekend. Very long season. Upside is much better than expected. Need to stay out of the box. Go Saints.

w00t! Yeah, I'd say there's an upside!

Thanks for the link Apple2K. I guess it all comes down to who do you believe, INCH or the mighty genius of Brian Sullivan?

After watching two games live....there is no question Baker is the real deal, Weninger had a fantastic game, and Essery, Wick and Carey all impressed me a lot. Considering Carey's liability was said to be his skating...he has decent speed. As I have said, I love Wick and the way he hits but is still a clean and honest player, and has decent skill. I think Austin, Vangog and Logue will all be good too but they are not as far along. Only got to see Logue for a few minutes before he got injured on Saturday but he skates well and plays with reckless abandon. Pat Raley is a pleasant surprise. I really think he can contribute a lot. Not sure who I am missing but all in all I really enjoyed seeing the freshmen play and think there are a few guys that could have really great college careers in that class.

Hope we can hold our own this weekend and avoid injuries. It is never easy going on the road to the CCHA with tough officiating for the visitors and a FSU team that brings back a lot of experience especially on defense. This is the one weekend all year where we will maybe miss Bollig and Stevenson the most.

I honestly felt after this weekend that our freshmen class was one of the better I have seen in a while. Let's hope they keep working hard, improving and avoiding injury. I am not sure what would have happened if we didn't have Baker on Saturday...he was really good in that game. A few rookie mistakes, but overall a great game.

Going further... http://insidecollegehockey.com/7Archives/Features/1011/recruitsdef_1011.htm

Baker named #17 incoming defenseman in the country. If you click the top 20 forwards on that page as well, Carey is #20 in the nation, and Weninger is #7 goalie in the nation. Gotta love the work the coaches do.
