SLU Hockey 2011-2012

Re: SLU Hockey 2011-2012

Just returned from a 4-day fishing trip with my son and his best friend at Elk Lake (near Mt. Marcy). Fishing this year was fabulous like last year, but Brook Trout much smaller - largest was 1.5 lbs. as opposerd to 3.0 lbs. last year. Ice going out on March 30th instead of the normal first week in May was a huge factor.

Last year, I saw something on the windshield of my car and at first thought it was a Parking Ticket. "At Elk Lake, you got to be expletive kidding me I yelled." Turns out a guy hiking on the Marcy Trail there, which starts by the cottage we stayed in, saw my license plate (SLUWAGON) and was a SLU grad. so left us a note. I think his last name was Hall, and know that he graduated in the 60's and owns a Microbrewery near Cooperstown. My kind of work!

This year, we overhear at breakfast a couple saying, "when we get back to the Princeton area, etc." So, bigmouth me asks if they follow Princeton Hockey. Well, he worked 45 years for Princeton (Admissions; then in Development/Fundraising), they have season tickets, know Bob Prier, and raved about the FF in Tampa. Then, he tells me that his brother was an Economics Professor at SLU for years. Turns out his brother is Dr. Vrooman, now retired and whose classes I cut too many times.

Point here is that SLU IS EVERYWHERE, even at Elk Lake. So was a moose seen near the Main Lodge on Tuesday by others, but not by us. The quest to see one continues.

Back to the hockey, I'm still loving the hiring of Mayotte. Have always heard - down this way - great things about him. Also, we appear to getting some top-notch recruits this year and beyond.

Too cool, Brian. I can absolutely second the idea that SLU is everywhere, as I talked to several people with SLU ties at the FF as well. A few grads, young and old, as well as migratory NNYers who were also followers of the school.

Now let's just hope Kris didn't pick up any, ahem, bad habits from 'Tiny Mike' last year while volunteering behind the bench at Ithaca Community College ;)

Re: SLU Hockey 2011-2012

Well, the Rangers are out. But, at least their one Cup in the last-72 years was with a SLU Grad. guiding the ship.

I'm too bummed to sleep right now. Guess I was asking too much for both the Giants and the Rangers to win it all in one year. Am heading to St. Lawrence County in a few hours - leaving here at 4 AM - and hoping to get more photos of Golden-winged Warblers, and other birds.

Re: SLU Hockey 2011-2012

Was it just me, or did the Kings' 4th goal in Game 3 of the Finals look very familiar to Carruthers' goal that ended the marathon 4-OT game against BU in 2000? It sure brought back a fond memory to this SLU fan.

Re: SLU Hockey 2011-2012

Well, pending financial clearance and getting my loan approved, I will become a resident of Florida by the end of July. Wrote the contract on a new townhouse today, about 40 minutes SE of Tampa. To say I'm excited is an understatement, although I also realize this now means being able to see the Saints play will now become much more difficult. If any of you ever need a place to stay in Florida, don't hesitate to ask! I may not be there a ton with work, but if I am I will have 2 spare bedrooms available.

Well, it appears that you'll be closer to Canton in terms of miles. I hope someday that you get to be a Seaway Captain for the freighters and ocean liners while they run the 1000 Islands between Cape Vincent and Ogdensburg and vice versa. I believe that special Captains are still required for that run. You could also try to plan your navigation trips so that they ended in the 'Burg about 5:00 on home game nights - until the navigation season closed in mid-December. Looking back, I should have made that my career but still haven't given up on the idea of moving to Alex. Bay and becoming a Tourboat Captain, but would only do so if the owners (both SLU Grads., of course) allowed me to run muskie lures behind the boats. Still wouldn't catch any.

Thanks for the offer to stay in Florida - I may take you up on it. Funny, but I've put the same offer on USCHO for people/fans to stay in Johnstown and nobody has taken me up on it except The Spaceman.

Looking forward already to Joe's Retirement Party/'roast" planned for Thurs., Nov. 2, with Homecoming Weekend to follow. I hope that everybody can be there.

Re: SLU Hockey 2011-2012

Joe's roast should be a "Hoot"! Pun intended. Hope everyone is enjoying their summer.

On another note, Carvy seems to being do a great job getting his message out. I think Joe left the program in very good hands!

Re: SLU Hockey 2011-2012

SLU received a perfect Academic Progression Rating for the men's hockey team, one of 7 to do so. Cornell, at a measly 986 although still above the average of 982 was the lowest ranking ECAC team. Not only are we part of the toughest academic conference, but our teams are **** good at succeeding in the classroom.

We may not win many championships as a conference, but our guys don't graduate looking to flip burgers at the local fast food joint ;)

Congrats. :) No surprise the hotel managing divers get the lowest.

Re: SLU Hockey 2011-2012

I received an unexpected phone call last night from Mr. Tom Foster, a retired Football Coach and Phys. Ed. Teacher in Gloversville, NY. As some of you already know, I was a Manager on the football team for Mr. Foster in HS MANY years ago. Lastly, it turned out that Coach Foster is the Maternal Grandfather of Jeremiah Cunningham. Small world.

Coach Foster strongly and repeatedly encouranged me to report that Jeremiah's brother, Connor Cunningham, is enrolling this fall at SLU. Like his brother, Connor was a forward at Salisbury Prep. Coach Foster also advised that Jeremiah played a couple of seasons in France, and will be enrolling in Graduate School at Villanova this fall.

Great news all around for a great family. Welcome aboard, Connor!

You all may already know this, but the Cunninghams' mom made the 1980 women's Olympic gymnastic team.

She graduated from Gloversville High with my youngest sister, and went on to be a five-time All American in gymnastics at Penn State. She will begin her 28th season as the Head Coach of Gymnastics at George Washington University this season.

I stand humbled.

I found this on the GWU website:

"As an athlete, Foster-Cunningham was a five-time All-America at Penn State and led the Nittany Lions to a national championship in 1980. That year she was a finalist for the prestigious Broderick Award, given to the most outstanding collegiate gymnast.

The Gloversville, NY, native represented the United States at the 1979 World University Games and helped the U.S. place third, its highest finish in the history of the Games at the time."

She is be the best athlete ever to come out of Gloversville IMO. Just wish I was the best photographer. LMAO!

Re: SLU Hockey 2011-2012

Hello SLU Fans,

First off, I hope you are all having great summers and are getting ready for the hockey season to start back up.

I'm writing on this thread is that it currently looks like I won't have the necessary time to run my blog (www.ecachockeyblog.blogspot.com) this season. I've been trying to think of ideas of how to keep the blog running, while not putting as much time into it as usual, but still keep it relevant to the college hockey community. So, I came up with this idea of a blog network. If you're not 100% sure what a blog network is check out SB Nation. I feel this could be the only way for my blog to survive, but at the same time could benefit ECAC Hockey fans and the blogging community.

I'm hoping to find a blogger for each of the ECAC teams to create the network. Currently, bloggers from Quinnipiac and Union have committed to the network (and possibly Clarkson & Colgate soon). From what I can tell, there isn't an active SLU Hockey blog, so I'm writing here to see if anyone has any interest in doing so. I can always help with getting the blog off the ground.

If you have any interest or questions, please email me at ecachockeyblog@gmail.com.

Thank you for your time, and good luck to the Saints this season.

Re: SLU Hockey 2011-2012

Well guys, sounds like we got our wishes answered! ECAC is scheduled to make a "major announcement" Tuesday in Lake Placid, all signs pointing to the Championships being brought back to Herb Brooks Arena in 2014!!!
