SLU 2009-2010 Season

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

Listened to the game tonight and it sounded like Cornell had the edge overall. Maybe it was just the radio, but it felt like there were endless stretches of the game where Cornell had possession and SLU couldn't get it out of the defensive zone. When we could get it out and mount a rush, it seemed as though every time down the ice I was hearing "blocked by Cornell", which resulted in the low number of saves by Scrivens. Cornell is a big, physical team that found a way to wear down SLU in the 3rd. (13-1 SOG advantage before pulling Tisi).

Still, there are a number of positives that can be taken away from this game. The PK unit continued their streak of killing penalties (23 in a row), and Tisi again had an outstanding game. Hopefully SLU can get on the board early tomorrow night and take some of the pressure off a young defensive corps.

On a grander scale, the good news is that we are still in 4th with a game against our nearest opponent in the standings tomorrow night. I will be heading to Colgate tomorrow and am wondering if anyone else will make the trip as well?

Dave..........I will be there along with the crew from Tupper Lake. In addition to the Tupper Lake crew Pat's sons Brian and Eric and Brian's girl friend Trish are with us. We will look for you and don't forget to dress warm...that Starr is like a meat locker!!!!

Not much to say about tonight. It was a fun and great hockey game to watch. I did think Baker missed a couple of calls late where a couple of our players got worked over. We did get hemmed in for extended periods of time and the final SOG stats were pretty heavily in Cornell's favor. We shot a ton over the net that didn't count as SOG. Don't know if our book on Scrivens was to go top shelf or high but we did sail a bunch over the net. The last goal was unfortunate. Once we went for the puck at center ice and missed it Cornell was off to the races with an odd man rush and it was a tick, tac, toe, passing for an easy open netter.

We do need a bit more offensive pressure but overall I was very impressed with the game, the effort and Tisi.

It was not as lopsided as the SOG. SLU did get hemmed in at times, Cornell did too just (a lot) less so. Cornell blocked a ton of shots and was stronger on the puck and got prompt clears for the most part. We missed the net a lot too. I am willing to bet attempted shots was fairly even. In our end, we shot it around the boards and then had to fight for it in the corner, and shot back around the boards and had to fight in the other corner. Was not very happy with the ability to break the puck out of the zone. The first goal came when are guys were hemmed in for a long stretch and were just gassed!

I like our chances in that game with a healthy lineup. Credit to Cornell, they played pretty well. So did we I thought all things considered. I would have been happy with a tie. The loss was tough, but most losses are. I would love to get another crack at these guys with a healthy lineup. Let's hope that happens in Albany!

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

Ugh.. Got a call from work and I have to cover an afternoon shift so there is no hope of me getting out of Canton in time to get to Colgate. Will watch on TW-26. Still hoping for the Yale-Brown weekend however. GO SAITNS!

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

Watched the game on TWC so didn't post on the Scores Thread. Far and away our biggest win of the season.

Keller was outstanding, and I mean outstanding, on 'd'. He made play after play after play.

Early in the OT one of our guys lost an edge at center ice, Colgate had a resulting 3 on 1, and Cunningham flies out of nowhere to deflect the puck away at the last instant to save the game. What an effort on his part.

Tisi was superb, and that's a very large understatement. His rebound control is very impressive.

We never quit. Coming back twice from 1-goal deficits in a rink that has been tough for us over the years says it all about us. The Saints work their butts off and find ways. This was a great team win in all aspects.:D

On the RPI and Union, after a great road trip to Central NY. 2 points there in any season is not too shabby.

GO SAINTS!

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

Great win for the boys! None bigger!! Agree Derek Keller is playing out of his mind on D. They did get caught out of position on the 2nd Colgate goal, but he has just been outstanding logging about 25 minutes a game.

Typical ECAC officiating tonight. They call tacky stuff against SLU all through the first and then Bollig is all but clear in OT and gets mugged and no call. Glad it didn't matter, but my God that is just wrong.

Reflecting on the weekend is that the loss of Child really is hurting us. I thought both Stratford last night and Torney tonight struggled. They need to pick it up as we need solid D down the stretch. I hope there are no injuries...didn't see Klancher at the end or Pitsi! Klancher I thought had a very good weekend. It doesn't get any easier...four tough road games and four tough at home too. Next week is huge because those are two teams competing for home ice with SLU. Hope for some success on the road.

Saw two muggings in OT against us where nothing was called and which the TWC Announcers said both were great plays by the 'Gate player. BS! Also, saw a 'Gate rush it OT where they were offsides by nearly a foot with nothing called and I screamed out loud that if we subsequently lost there that my TV was toast.

I'm glad that SLU found a way to play through it. We certainly got lots of practice on the PK and our PK was stellar.

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

Definitely a huge win, and a satisfying weekend. Only listened to the game, and not real attentively at that, but I would guess not seeing Klancher and Pitsi late is likely due to shortening the bench more than anything.

Something remarkable: 9 of the past 10 games, Tisi has held the opposition to 2 goals or less. Obviously, thats a known factor in the success lately, but its still absolutely impressive.

I imagine Mike and Bob are both feeling a little better as well, as Mike needs 1 point to reach the century mark, and Bob will be missing the next 3 weekends (based on what he told me at Princeton) after the Union and RPI series due to the Olympics.

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

Go Saints Go! Well we capped off an exciting weekend with a BIG win over Colgate. Our passing game was a little off this evening, but the boys worked hard up and down the ice. It is also great to see that we are a physical team and not afraid to mix it up or battle along the boards. The Saints certainly planted a few good hits on both Cornell and Colgate. Tisi had two nice games and if it wasn't for a garbage first goal last night by Cornell, it could have been a 3 or 4 pt weekend. The Saints seem to be peaking at the appropriate time and it is making for some exhilarating hockey. It is always great to see the rest of the Tupper crew as well as Mike P. and so many of the parents and fans that could make the trip. I am looking forward to some fantastic hockey in the Capital Region next weekend. Go Saints Go!

Our whole section screamed "OFFSIDES" on that call. Of course right after the missed off sides call Gate got a faceoff deep on our zone.
I did think the officiating was pretty uneven........in the first period the first two on us were perhaps deserved....the third tripping call was totally bogus. Our player had minimal upper body contact....the ref looks up and sees a Gate player on the ice and calls tripping. The 4th call we thought finally a call on Colgate and it was us who went off.

There are games where we play hard and well and lose.....then there are games like tonight where we didn't play our best and somehow came out with the two points. Frankly I thought we would have been fortunate to come out with a point and tie. Colgate controlled the play and passed the puck much better. After playing 8 minutes down in the first, Gate controlled much of the play in the second. We got better as the game went on but up until the third we mustered no offense whatsoever.

It was nice to see Mike get his 99th point and I hope he can get 100 next weekend while Bob is still around.

My vote for player of the game goes to Raley. He made some very intelligent plays from the point. A couple of times including the game winning goal in OT he resisted the temptation to whack a slap shot into someone's pads or dump the puck into the corner. Instead he held the puck, slipped by the defender, put the shot on goal and off of McKenzie for the game winner. Once again our PK was stellar and like Muskieman mentioned in OT Jeremiah Cunningham saved the game with a diving play to knock the puck away and deny what would have been a scary chance for Gate to salt the game away.

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

VERY interesting--but depressing to note that we have clinched NO spot (except last) so far. I blame the zeebs.

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

I have to say, it's great to see you and Vic (and a few others) here on the site, through thick and thin.

I'm glad that they are here as well. Trust me, longtime SLU fans have experienced some looooooooooong seasons. The 6-26-0 season in the late 70's sticks out.

As do the four seasons prior to that one that I spent in the press box..................when we had to suffer through Dave Taylor and Brian Shields and Kevin Zappia and Bill Blackwood up our scarlet and brown butts.

Apple2K
Nothing new, really, but nothing bad either. Child was walking around during practice this week with a significant limp, but didn't go through with surgery. Flanagan looks healthy and fine, but will probably be at least one-two more weeks before he's ready to go.
Jared Keller was still in street clothes and I presume is done for the year, although no confirmation from the coaches on that.

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

I went to RPI's Legends of '85 press conference this afternoon. Joe Marsh is a class act, and I hope that you do well for the rest of the season (barring tonight, of course).
