SLU 2009-2010 Season

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

Hmm . . . . Doing well in polls means coaches would spend time working over poll voters?

Well, the original post talked about "scrambling for votes and recognition in the [polls]." I take that to mean trying to convince poll voters to cast a vote for you. My take on that is that it's a waste of time. Win your games. That's what people notice - voters, recruits, everybody. Forget the polls. I'd rather beat the #1 team in the polls than be the #1 team in the polls.

PS: I love these philosophical discussions--don't you?

Yes. :)

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

Can't resist: if you'd rather BEAT the #1 team than be it, I assume you'd rather be Robert Morris than Miami.
Enough. I surrender. It was fun, though!

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

Still blown away by Keller's goal...
As we lined up 4 x 4 with 2 minutes left and 3-2 lead with Yale set to go on PP in 30 seconds,.... you cant tell me anyone in the building not wearing a SLU jersey with number 7 or 26 on it was thinking "lets score here"
Outstanding! took a fair amount of the lingering sting out of last March in Albany.

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

Article in the WDT today about the proposed annual deficit for SLU. The task group studying possible cuts has proposed 'cutting back on the number of away games played by St. Lawrence athletic teams and cutting back on uniforms, equipment and coaches'. The largest part of the cuts would be to academic programs.

That was an unbelievable goal. Without that goal, I really feel like we could have ended up in a tie or loss. It was a mental back-breaker. And this goal from a kid that didn't score a goal until his Junior year if I recall correctly. The kid can sure skate. He has really stepped up his game and is showing great, quiet leadership too.

Nothing too new here. I know that the travel is the biggest thing. I know that was a factor in the scheduling even this year....I don't think we would have played Niagara three times otherwise and I am not sure SHU is reciprical or not. I know they got okay money going to Omaha and Denver but did not fully cover them. The trip to Houghton next year is expensive...I hope MTU is picking that up. There are a lot more concentration areas of study than 20 years ago when I was there...most of the new can be hacked in my opinion. I predict hard times ahead for schools such as SLU. It is $50K a year all-in (after taxes) and that is a tough sell in a bad economy when state schools are (in many cases) a fifth or less. This is one area where the Ivies have a huge advantage. Harvard doesn't need to worry too much about money. This is a complex problem and it is tough to react quickly. You still have to recruit and the schedule is set sometimes years in advance.

I just hope some donors step up. The part of my education I still value most was in the Appleton classroom. Seriously, the education that I can't question the value of was learned in Appleton being part of a team, learning from the coaches, understanding team dynamics, learning how to manage time and responsibilities, etc. That has to be kept alive!

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

In today's SLU preview:

Child is out 4-6 weeks with a knee injury. Surgery is optional and would not speed up or delay recovery.

Flanny skated for the first time this week, and will be back later this year.

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

The news could be worse, but it's still bad. Gotta hang in there until everyone's back.

It's a considerable loss, but we have some guys who can step in and hopefully play big in these big games and make up some of the difference. We'll see what tonight and this weekend brings.

Saw that too.

So how many times will we be playing each other next season??

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

Go Saints Go! Looking forward to an exciting weekend of Saints Hockey. Like I said, we keep destiny in our hands by continuing to win. Hopefully the weather will be good for the ride this afternoon to Cornell. Tim and apple, thanks for the very philosophical debate over my last post. I wasn't looking to get that deep into the polls situation, just that we seem to need to have a great season to be seen, while schools like Maine or BU earlier in the year, can have a record that is just over 500% and they remain in the rankings. Being a coach myself, I would much rather have Joe and the gang focus on preparing the team. The only ranking that really counts, is the one at the end of the season. Let’s grab a couple of big wins this weekend and keep climbing! Go Saints Go

Looking forward to seeing the rest of the gang from Tupper

I wonder that too. Maybe not 2010-2011, but the following year. I think SLU already has their NC schedule pretty well set for next season with two trips to Michigan (Ferris and MTU in January!!! )!! I am hoping UNH is back on the schedule and UVM, and I assume RIT and Niagara? So, if those assumptions are right it should not be more than 4 times!:D

With Child, I am not sure you try to bring a kid like that back for the playoffs. I suppose it depends on how we finish! Flanny we need and that hit still ****es me off....I hope they get kid tonight and someone crushes him LEGALLY in open ice. The one I continue to worry about is Jared Keller. Really like what he brings to the lineup and he has had a hard luck season. Concussions suck! Really hope that clears up for him and he can get back to playing!!!! No excuses thought...we got to win with what we got. I sure hope we can finish strong!

I don't know if this has been mentioned here yet. Clarkson, RPI, SLU, and Union will be playing a double header in Lake Placid early in the season. I don't know what the match-ups will be, but my guess is CCT-SLU and RPI-UC.

Cool! Thanks Ralph!! That is really cool. LP in October is beautiful.

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

THAT was a heck of a game, but full marks to Cornell--they fought off an outstanding effort by the Saints! I gotta admit, the game-winner was a beautiful goal, and Tisi had no chance. One of the best college games I've seen--and by and large, the officiating was a complete non-factor.
Tomorrow is another day: a beat Colgate day!

Agree it was a very good game, that Tisi had no chance on the GW which was a pretty goal and the officiating was about the best I have seen this year in the ECAC (will the real Tim Kotyra please come forward). The linesmen were not so good, missed some offsides calls pretty badly. A really heartbreaking loss for SLU who played a pretty even game. They got bottled up at times (especially in the 2nd) but also had some decent chances the other way. Very pretty goal by Hughes from Bollig. The pair of freshmen defense (Dewey and Stratford) had some scary moments in addition to being on the ice for CU's first goal. I thought Carden was hit from behind right before CU got their first goal. A much cleaner game for both teams than the first game at Appleton. An absolute heartbreaking loss for SLU. We could have really used a player like Kyle Flanagan tonight. They need to try to get a couple of points tomorrow in a place we don't typically play very well. Tomorrow's game is huge for SLU!!!!

I really just have one question after tonight...*** has happened at Clarkson? I thought it might be an off year but this is shocking!

Injuries to 3 players, coupled with the suspension of 2 other players... they're just undermanned.

They've been playing forwards on defense, and have almost no healthy scratches on any given night. There was a good article in the ECAC preview by Sullivan this week.

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

Tough loss, but let's be honest: that's a heck of an effort by a shorthanded squad against an excellent team, in one of the toughest rinks in the country. We knew they wouldn't win out - let's see what happens tomorrow.
