Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

As got six has penned a million words about 90% of the crap that goes on has to do with officiating. Last year if you touched a guy within 10 feet of the boards it was a 5 and a DQ .This year if the kid isin`t taken off the ice immobilized on a stretcher it is a 2 for boarding. My son played hockey and I had to tell him no more at the age of 12 because I didn`t want to see him in a wheelchair. The hits from behind have GOT to be stopped.

And saying this to SLU fans is preaching to the choir. One of the best Saint players ever was paralyzed in 1988 in his third pro game going head first into the boards and one of the Saints favorites had his career ended with a broken neck (Allie Skelley) on a hit from behind by an LSSU player. If it was a legit hit from behind, I am all for 5 and a game misconduct. I saw both and the hit from behind that was late by Malchuk on Caister was the dirtiest one of the night. That was only 2. There is not a Saint fan I know that wants to see HFB's....that is not the game our guys are taught to play. But being an honest player is a two way street...you can't dive. Raley hooked D'Amigo high and got a hooking minor but you would have thought D'Amigo was grabbed by Hulk Hogan. Pirri and Polacek are gifted players and draw as much attention and they played solid games last night.

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

The Albany T-U is a useless rag. The beat writer for RPI and Union is an off-season horse racing writer. I would put a lot more stock in the articles written by Weaver and Schott.

This can't be stressed enough. Don't even bother reading the Times Useless when it comes to college hockey coverage. Both the Troy Record and Schenectady Gazette are online and should be checked for stories on RPI or Union.

While folks were upset about what happened with D'Amigo, more of it does stem from him getting run exactly like that in three straight home games and having equally gutless officiating in each case and it was a carbon copy of what happened against Harvard right down to time left in the game and everything.

That shouldn't take away from the kind of game it was. Very gutsy effort by both teams and a tie was an appropriate outcome considering.

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

I didn't have the benefit of replays or watching the tape as I was watching live just like you were. However a friend who watched the game last night e-mailed me and said that Curran's hit on D'Amigo was a retaliation immediately after D'Amigo smoked Curran behind the net.

D'Amigo handed out three hits that shift until Curran ended the shift quite violently. RPI TV taped the game and you can stream it on this site. Note, you have to use an "alternative" browser (for now at least).

Actually my biggest disappointment in reading the article was on the front of the sports page there was a teaser about RPI honoring the 85 championship team and it said.....more info inside. I looked "inside" and the only info was the picture with the article and no other mention. If you know where I can read more about it and that team let me know as I'd like to read it.

Judging by the number of TV crews at the press conference, a better option might be finding archived footage of a TV story. RPIAthletics.com does a fairly good job of putting any news story up on their site here. (Videos are usually posted, but they occasionally take a little while longer to post.)

Then you were the guy with the RPI jersey on talking to Brandon before the game??? The rest of our crew was sitting right a long side him or behind him.

Aye. That was me. Those were awful seats that you guys were sitting in. I hope that the post didn't get in the way of any goals. But, I expect it may have, considering that 5 of the goals last night were scored on the opposite end.

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

We played a good 2 periods on hockey last night - unfortunately there are 3. Maybe we were tired both physically and mentally from Friday's game vs RPI but Union's goal that tied it 2-2 sure seemed to take the wind out of our sails.
I thought Tisi did OK but would not be surprised to see Petizian back between the pipes for 1 game next weekend.
6 games left - 4 at home GO SAINTS!

You know, even though I was obviously disappointed with the result last night, I really didn't walk out of the rink feeling too badly about last night or the weekend as a whole. St. Lawrence deserved better - they should have come out of the weekend with three points.

Union played a good third period: they did exactly what they needed to do on their home ice to start, and when they got the lead they put the clamps on. On the other end, I agree with you that SLU looked a bit tired - the previous 5 periods of hockey took a lot out of them, I think.

But taking each game as a whole, I think SLU looked like the better team both nights. SLU had two bad turnovers, and they both resulted in goals. The last goal was a soft, long-range wrister that Tisi never saw. (Union's third goal was a beauty, though.) With two or three notable exceptions, they looked poised in their own end, the forecheck was relentless, and they generated lots of chances. All while skating shorthanded WAY too much.

How in the world those officials decided to call what, and when, I have no idea. There was interference all over the ice last night - both teams got away with it when they were on their heels, but because SLU carried the play 5x5 for the first two periods, Union got away with a lot more over the course of the game, and I do mean a lot. (SLU got away with a couple in the third, plus a ridiculously blatant trip by the penalty boxes that prevented an odd-man rush for Union.) The boarding call on SLU was the EXACT same play that had already happened a half-dozen times in the game. Union knocked the net off to spoil a point-blank scoring chance . . . TWICE. And a third time they covered the puck in the crease. Not one call.

Anyway, I give Union credit for a good game: their goalie played well, they hung on long enough for SLU to wear down, and they finished very strong. SLU had a much tougher weekend, and wore down at the end. But they still looked pretty good and deserved a better fate. It easily could have been 2-0 after the first period and 4-1 or 5-1 after the second. It happens. If they keep playing at this level, they'll be fine, especially if they can get Flanagan back soon.

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

Oh by the way . . . it was great to see everybody last night. I had fun. I hope Got6's son had fun with his balloon helicopter on the way home. ;)

And I'm glad that Get the Puck Outta Here and I finally had a chance to step outside and settle the whole poll issue like men. :D :D

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

A tough road trip for our Saints.
I agree with Tim U's assessment.......we played well enough in both games to come out with more than one point.
Friday night I felt we were clearly the better team and last night we outplayed Union for long stretches of the game.

I think the difference both nights but particularly Saturday night was that when given some grade A opportunities Union buried them (although Tisi came up big on many occasions particularly at the end of a scoreless first period).
The officiating also didn't help us much on Saturday night. We played a lot of the second period shorthanded and certainly didn't have many power play chances ourselves. I thought the officiating was influenced by the home crowd, particularly the too many men penalty called on us. Like Tim said, why Union wasn't called for at least one delay of the game penalty for knocking the nets off their moorings or covering the puck in the crease I don't know. You would think at least one of those was an overt penalty. Two of Union's goals were very preventable...I think it was the tying one we had an easy chance to get the puck out of the zone and didn't (turned it over just inside the blue line) and on another the mixup behind the net led directly to a grade A opportunity that Union put away.

Our boys put out a great effort both nights.

When you look at the standings it doesn't get any closer. Next weekend is huge as are all of them from this point out.....Q Pac finally broke their losing streak and who know's which Princeton team will show up. We have put together a lot of hard fought victories and work this season to get well ahead of where most of us thought we might be. And as nice a season as it's been how the next 3 weeks play out should be real interesting. If we play with the effort we've consistently shown I'm confident we can hang right in there with anyone.

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

The one thing Union did well that made a difference at the end was finish their checks on the forecheck (or in the case of Welsh finish his runs:eek:  ). Our defense looked as tired in the third as I have ever seen them. I can't blame Tisi for a single goal all weekend. Goal two on Friday was on the shoulders of one of our D-Men, and the GW on Saturday was a mistake by one of our reliable forwards and some miscommunication with our d. Union is a competent team. They benefited by having a decimated Clarkson team on Friday while we played a fast RPI team.

Definitely would have wished for better and actually thought we deserved better but sometimes it just doesn't bounce your way. Some of our guys looked a little off last night too...namely Curran which doesn't happen often. One moment he stole the puck from Vermeulen, next he has a clear shot with Bollig in front and shoots it high and wide and it sails out of the zone.

Cunningham had a very good game and was skating like a cannon ball. Bogo had one mistake but played a very good game otherwise.

Officiating...don't get me started. There is just too much there to gripe about. It is almost like they don't even know the rules. Absolutely incompetent officiating. Even when Vermeulen is scoring shorthanded he had a guy hanging off of him and there was no call...good thing he scored. Cunningham was tackled on a similar short-handed chance. Absolutely clueless officiating. We maybe deserved a couple in the 3rd but by that time it didn't matter....five periods of getting screwed by this officiating crew all weekend had tired us out.

Great to see everyone. Stay away from the balloon lady at Outback on Wolf Road. She said it was a helicopter but it was actually an obscene sex figure with both male and female bits. The troubling thing is even my kid was saying that is no helicopter!

I watched the game on Friday on the net and watched it again this morning via the RPITV archive, and I thought that although the teams were pretty evenly matched, RPI had the better of play overall. Just my biased opinion, of course. :)

Union is a competent team. They benefited by having a decimated Clarkson team on Friday while we played a fast RPI team.
It's good that after all the recent years of the CD teams being probably the weakest pairing in the league, and in earlier seasons RPI getting no help from Union, that the two teams are able to help each other now by wearing down opponents.

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

SlU has a good club and your captain is a little dynamo but make no mistake they ran D`amigo all night and the big hit from behind late in the 3rd desrved a 5min major. Ruined an otherwise very good game. I Lost some respect for Marsh tonight with the constant runs on D`amigo it was no doubt his doing. That is the kind of coaching I expect from some of the other coaches but he stooped to a new low.

You are so off base on this one. Don't even go there. If you have lost some respect for Joe as you say you have, you stand alone.

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

I think Union was probably outplayed for the better part of the game last night, but unlike earlier models, this year's group is quite resilient, sticks to what they do best for the most part, rarely panic and have some stone cold goal scorers. SLU is a very impressive squad with a lot of speed if a bit on the small side. Obviously they are extremely well coached and I think they will be a major factor into the playoffs.

In case you are interested, here is a link to post game video of interviews with Leaman and Marsh.

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

While disappointed with a 1-point weekend for the Saints, I was not disappointed with the effort. Both games were fun to watch and the Saints, as always, worked their tails off.

As for the officiating at both games, there are four officials on the ice and they still can't get things right. Don't have enough hands and fingers to count the number of blatant penalties and offsides that were missed (both ways), not to mention some calls that were made that were bogus. Plain and simple, ECAC officiating is a joke and has been for years.

It's scary how great D. Keller has become. He never makes a mistake. Hughes is incredible and is only going to get better. Those two really stood out, as well as the usual guys (did anyone say Verms., Cunningham, and company?). Tisi was his usual steady self.

GO SAINTS.

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

First, good to see everybody (again in most cases), and meet the 3 RPI posters Fri night.

I also think we deserved atleast 1 more point this weekend, and arguably 2; but we'll take the point and move on. It's tough when you're playing shorthanded and have a guy with 102 points having to sit on the bench.

I really don't think there is a goal this weekend that Tisi would want back, he really can't be directly faulted for any of them. Several defensive mistakes and breakdowns caused almost all 7 goals this weekend, especially with not being able to get the puck out of the zone. Quinni can be dangerous if we give them too many chances offensively.

We now look forward to Q and Princeton. On paper, this should be at a minimum 3 points, however I know we aren't taking anything for granted. If SLU works their butts off for 120 minutes next weekend, I will say that it should be 4 points. Our next 6 games involve 5 teams in the bottom half of the conference, and @ Yale. In my opinion, we should come out with atleast 8 points to close out the year.

You can't take anything for granted. I hope for a solid 120 or 130 minute efforts next weekend and good results. There is nothing but a hair separating 1-11 in the league right now. Clarkson is taking a rare break from the hunt for home ice and I actually feel bad for them. Maybe I should feel sorry for us thought because teams are getting pushed the way most travel partners push the other team....I think that killed us this weekend actually. Really, it is amazing that the difference between a 1 and 4 point weekend was probably no more than 2-3 shifts. Some missed / wrong calls loom large too like Union knocking the net off with McKenzie in alone or covering the puck in the crease. ECAC officiating is an absolute disgrace!

On a brighter note, good look to SLU recruit Carey who (if my memory is correct) tied the record for goals in a season for Canadian Tier 2 today with 2g, 1a against Seguin. If correct, one more goal tomorrow in the regular season finale against Hamilton gives him the record currently held by Darren Haydar....and a true achievement for NCAA bound players. Let's hope for a good playoff run for Burlington....would love to see him get 100 goals.

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

Video of a panel discussion, created by RPI-TV, on Friday http://www.rpitv.org/productions/276-legends-of-85-panel-discussion. The panel consists of four members of the RPI 1985 team. Coach Marsh speaks from about the 48:30 mark for a minute or so.

The video may not work if you are using IE. (They are trying to fix it.) It works with other browsers.

BTW, the video of the RPI-SLU game is also up on the RPI-TV site now.

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

That's an Ontario Jr. A record, not all of Canada. IIRC, Brett Hull's 105 is the record for all of Tier II http://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/pdisplay.php?pid=2410.

Not to split hairs, but I think that total includes playoff games. With 10-15 more games....who knows!!

Regardless, it is a great achievement and in all my years of following hockey I am not sure I have ever seen a +60 stat.

Let's hope for a couple more today for Carey in the season finale!

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

Well, I was disappointed that we only walked away from the weekend with 1 point. The boys played hard, but failed to seal the deal in both of the 3rd periods. A few mistakes seem to cost us down the final stretch when we really needed to slam the door. The Union game was probably the most upsetting. This was a game where we controlled the majority of the tempo as well as the possession of the puck. Even when they had a power play, they couldn't generate any offense. As a matter of fact, SLU scored one short-handed goal and almost had 2 others. It was great how our penalty kill could move the puck around their power play. I also didn't care for the continued popping of the goal off of the pegs. Reminded me of the 1988 NCAA Championship vs Lake Superior. Two things kept Union in that game, their goalie, Kinkade, who had a nice game and a great first period and their physical play. They were all about finishing the hit. How we could get called on one check and they only end-up with two penalties after the amount of hits and elbows thrown is beyond me. Obviously it was beyond the vision of the officials as well. It is nice that Union is having a good season, but I wasn't overly impressed for a number 16 team in the Nation. The other thing they did do though, was find a way to win! On the plus side, we still are holding on to the 4th seed. This weekend will be important against Quinn. and Princeton, especially at home. Joe, Bob, and Mike have done a fantastic job with the team. Between the coaches and the hard work and camaraderie among all of the players they have created an exciting and fun season.
It was great to see all of fans and parents again. They are a fun crew to be around. Nice to finally meet Tim U and as he previously stated, settle our differences Mano-e-Mano. Looking forward to more Saints Hockey! Go Saints Go
