SLU 2009-2010 Season

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

NJ has put Mike McKenna on waivers.

Goalies must dread getting stuck behind Brodeur, hopefully he catches on elsewhere - Atlanta would be neat.

Last weekends tilt was tough considering both houses are hard to squeak out W's. Thought that SLU played well and had a chance to win both but that's how it goes sometimes. IMO the reffing was awful but that's just my 2-cents. Here's to the weekend and hope that the Saints can begin to gain some momentum that will carry on to Albany.

NJ has put Mike McKenna on waivers.

The Devils have signed goaltender Mike McKenna, who has been playing in Lowell, to a two-way contract and placed him on waivers, so he can be reassigned to Lowell. McKenna, who attended training camp as a tryout and was previously on an AHL contract, is 16-9-2-2 with a 2.29 goals-against average and .927 save percentage in Lowell.

“We wanted to have another goaltender under contract for depth,” Lamoriello explained.

If McKenna, 26, clears waivers without being claimed by another team, the Devils will have four goaltenders in the organization that are eligible to play in the NHL—Martin Brodeur, Yann Danis, Jeff Frazee and McKenna.

Ah, it sounded kinda confusing because he's had a good year in Lowell so far, but I couldn't find anything else this morning on it. Good to hear, however it might be tough for him to get a look in the Devils organization unless Marty retires... ever.

Tough yes........but on the other hand, Lou Lamoriello is one of the most astute and savvy GM's in the business. He wouldn't have done this unless McKenna is worthy and he might have some sort of plan or ulterior motive we haven't thought of. Believe me......everything Lamoriello does is a very calculated move.

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

Good news from Dan, Saint's fans:

Flanny is "probable" to come back this weekend. Obviously he's a catalyst on the PP and offensively, so getting him back would be huge.

J. Keller has returned home to SK for the week to rest his brain in the hopes of getting past the post-concussion syndrome. Derek said he had no headaches/light headedness for most of the day Tuesday.

Hurley says Greg Carey has an "NHL-Ready shot, and loves to use it." If true, that's scary.

Yeah, I wouldn't expect Flanny to be thrown completely back into the fray though. I heard he might be back but I kind of think Flanny is going to have to getis stronger and meaner and grind more to compliment his unbelievable skill a bit. It is almost like he needs to play the other side of the game besides just the PP stuff, but...well, this probably not making sense!:D Maybe what is I am saying is that for Flanny to really be back in the lineup he has to get more in the middle of it they way every Saint player does in addition to relying on his skill and finesse.

I did ask about J. Keller last week. He is done for the season. One thing I love about SLU is the family atmosphere and seeing the parents bond with each other and other kids on the team. The result of that is Bob McKenzie helping to get Jared in front of a concussion specialist in Toronto. I believe that doctor reassured Jared that he will still be able to play hockey but the best thing for him is to go home, take a break from school work, hockey and just chill for a bit. Probably great advice!! It is too bad that Jared and Derek won't be in the same lineup for Derek's last game, but a ful:D recovery is more important and I for one sure wish that for Jared. I don't know the Keller boys as well as some other players, but they sure seem like great kids.

For those of you that don't know, another talented SLU recruit (Justin Baker) was at the RPI game last weekend. He looks like a solid kid. His arm is in a cast so he is done for the season in Streetsville. I asked a few people about Carey and liked what I heard. Great shot, absolutely deadly from the circles in and loves to shoot. Knock on him was his skating, but as long as he gets there. Knock on Mike McKenzie was skating too, but his skating is so much better now and you gotta love his skill, scoring touch, hands, shot and competitiveness....you can't teach certain things such as scoring. Anyway, hopefully he can be an impact player the way McKenzie has been.

As I understand it the guys coming in 2010 are Wick, Essery, Logue, Carey, Stevenson and Baker. I am sure they are looking for a goalie too. Then the guys in 2011 are Vangog, Martin, Austin, and G. Hughes (so far)! I heard Gunnar Hughes is more like Bollig than his brother....nothing wrong with that at all!!:D

Yeah, those bad-skating 100-point scorers are all right in my book.

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

I was hoping there'd be a little more chatter on this thread than there is on ours, but I'm not finding any. Where are ya Mike? Well either way good luck to the Saints tonight. You're definitely the stronger team at this point in the season and QU is only 1-3 @ Appleton since joining the league.

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

Back on home ice, with their star freshman forward back in the lineup, against a desperate team chasing them in the standings, and they come up with . . . that?????????????????

I expected this team to have some ups and downs, but that was nothing short of embarrassing.

Absolutely AWFUL. That actually reminded me a lot of our effort against them 4 years ago in Albany. Actually Maine was way worse than this year, but that was about as bad as it gets. No energy, **** poor effort, no chemistry and just nothing working.

I thought we wanted a bye and home ice, but the way we are playing maybe not!

No one stepped up tonight. Someone better tomorrow.

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

At least you can't blame Kotyra! :p We tried to let the Saints back in the game all night. ;)

I sure don't think the officiating was anything to rave about. They called some silly penalties both ways and then let real ones go. The tackle on Carden in the 2nd and a trip by Q while SLU was on the PP were the most glaring. But, we could have played the entire 60 minutes a man up and I am not sure it would have mattered. We just didn't show up.

That is the thing. I can accept losing a close one, I can't accept the fact we just didn't show up. This was a huge game and we threw out probably threw out a huge clunker. I have this sinking feeling that will be a difference maker between home ice and not for SLU. Can't say we didn't put ourselves in a good position to be there, and the last 80 minutes of hockey have probably thrown it away. And Clarkson won so Princeton will be ****ed. Oh well, we just have to show up and play otherwise the rest doesn't matter.

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

Can I get my $4 admission back? That was probably lower quality than the high school game I could have gone to instead.

When you don't skate and can't make a pass, you won't win. Not in the ECAC, and not in many other leagues either. I honestly thought the 4th line played the best out of everybody, and even they didn't play outstanding.

Gotta give it to Q though, they played pretty well, definitely not like a team that has gone 2-11-2 since Dec 1st.

Can't say too much about the officiating, as I only saw a few of the penalties called. There didn't seem to be any real phantom calls, and nobody really complained much about anything. We can't afford going 0-8 on the PP, with only 1 or 2 of them having any sustained pressure. They also need to focus on getting shots, most of the time it was working the puck around the perimeter, then missing a pass and chasing it back to our end.

On to the early game tomorrow, 4pm start. They need a win there, no more no less.

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

The stinker of all stinkers.......

I agree with Tim.........how embarassing to put out an effort like that against an opponent just behind us in the standings. Watching on B-2 I was mortified.
I also agree with Leckster........this game is going to cost us big time in the standings. Tonight is a must win against a Princeton team that will be very hungry after losing to Clarkson.

RPI jumped us in the standings, Q Pac moved right behind us and the only real help we got was Yale's win. It's time we helped ourselves like we have been doing all season.

Absolutely shameful to play a game that poorly at this important juncture of the season. I sure hope we haven't run out of steam at the start of the stretch run.

Sorry I won't be able to watch this afternoon as I have to head to a memorial service for a good friend who passed away in Cherry Hill NJ.

Come on Saints.......let's at least show up tonight!!!!

Not quite as bad as finishing first 4 years ago only to lose to Q-Pac 4-Ouch in Albany and then being put in a MUST WIN situation against Dartmouth to get to the NCAA's....but close.

Everything was wrong about that last night. At least against Maine I could say "Hey, at least it was NC and didn't matter!!!" Only problem is last night REALLY mattered and likely will come back to haunt us as result. Just because we are in Appleton, there is no reason to think it will be easy. Princeton will skate right by us.

Even worse is the fact that the Freshmen D-Man with the game winner turned down an offer to SLU and the freshmen goalie is the brother of a Saint!  I'll put that in the stupid and wrong buckets respectively!;)

Must win today....if not for the points than for mental health. That is 80 minutes in a row of clunker hockey!

There were a couple that bugged me a bit. Somebody - I think it was Caister - got tripped behind the Q net while SLU was on a PP and it wasn't called. But it was probably SLU's 4th power play, and they weren't doing squat with their chances anyway. I expect that to be let go sometimes, and it wouldn't have mattered.

The other one was worse. It was 1-0 or 2-0 at the time. SLU was shorthanded and Carden carried the puck into the Q zone. One of their D skated up directly behind him and pulled his skates out from under him, dumping him right on his face. No call. Quinnipiac picked up the puck, skated into the SLU zone, and ended up scoring.

As we've already agreed, nothing would have changed the fact that SLU for some reason decided not to show up last night. Quinnipiac wanted it more, played better, deserved to win, and almost certainly would have won even if we'd gotten every call we wanted.

Gotta win today.

Same two I noted as blatant and annoying with same comments. I think it was Keller that was tripped behind the net. The tackle on Carden should have been called. That mattered! Further, this is how refs screw up the game and confuse players. By not calling what has to be called and calling the crap that shouldn't be called, it turns the world upside down. None of the calls change the fact, however, that SLU did not show up last and pretty much played awful.

Just a comment. The only good shift in the 2nd was the line of Carden - Drewiske - Flanny. The 4th line played pretty well, but is anyone else wondering when the propensity of Pitsikoulis to skate back into the zone and rewind (the way Hank Lammens used to) is going to come back to haunt us. He keeps skating with the puck to wind up to skate it out of the zone but he carries it too much. He did it once last night and Q-Pac was all over him.

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

Thank you Alex Petizian.

SLU didn't cash in on that overtime PP, but if you ask me we really had no business being in OT to begin with, so I'll take the point.
