SLU 2009-2010 Season

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

 I'll add my two cents about the game at Q then we can hopefully forget about it and focus on the upcoming series with Union and RPI.

I arrived at the break between the first and second periods and we were down 1-0. SOG read 4 for Q and 11 for SLU. That pretty much sums it up. I guess there was a major misconduct that put SLU on the power play for most of the first period. Too bad we couldn't cash in on the opportunity.

We had 12 power plays overall and only converted on 1. Q was quicker and played better D. Their scoring chances were much better set up then ours. When they broke down the ice, they had our D beat all the way in a flash which was unsettling, then walked in on Robby Moss and had little trouble finding the back of the net. To be fair, there was only one shot, from the left wing circle, where Moss had a clear, unobstructed view. That drew many groans from the Saints fans. On the rest, I didn't think he had a chance. They executed too well with 2 or 3 players swarming the net with little D to stop them.

SLU actually controlled the play for much of the game, but in an oddly ineffective way. And there were some amazing shots by our guys that I could not believe Clarke stoned, especially in the third period. Our guys moved the puck around the perimeter effectively, but there were always 2 Q defenders and a crowd in front of Clarke and there was no way the puck was going to penetrate that many people. As a consequence, the slappers went nowhere, and our game in the crease was not enough of a presence. Contrast that to our D, who was lured away from the goal allowing somebody to sneak in behind Moss.

What bothered me was that any one of Q's offensive players could bring the puck down the ice on the left or right, one on one with our defenders, and literally push our D into the center of the ice and get shots off right in front of Robby. Nobody would have pushed Lammens, McGeogh or Hurlbut around like that! They would have stood them up and eaten them for a snack or forced them wide around the goal.

The third period was our best. Tisi came in and didn't allow a goal, but there were only 4 shots to test him.

Our guys were looking slow and sluggish, and I know they can do better because I saw flashes of better energy in the third where they looked great. I wouldn't really say Q "beat them to the puck" as much as their reactions were with pinpoint precision when it counted. Lampe's goal was, unfortunately, a thing of beauty. A split second reaction, and he knew precisely where to tuck the puck behind a sprawling Moss without even looking.

I will say our guys are the more talented group when it comes to passing and bringing the puck up the ice. Q's game is fast break all the way, hitting the streaking guy beating our D which they seemed to be able to do at will.

Overall impression - SLU can play with this team and is probably capable of beating them if they keep mistakes to a minimum and bring more intensity.

Our PK was stellar last night and was likely the main difference in the game. When we killed the bulk of that major, cut a few seconds short by an SLU penalty, and then scored on the PP it really set the tone for the rest of the game.

I noticed this almost from the start. They skated well all game but did seem to be back on their heels more often than not. That's how we were Friday against Clarkson so I was worried we might have a problem ourselves. Luckily, we stepped it up a couple of notches.

Personally, I think the Saints played a better game than the scoreboard showed. They didn't quit and I think they left it all on the ice. If our PK hadn't stoned them I'm sure it would have been a much different outcome.

As usual, the SLU fan support was decent and well behaved (was that a large Generous contingent I saw?). It was also a pleasure to finally meet Brandon. ;)

Good luck the rest of the way, at least until February 12th! :p

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

Everyone wants to win every game, and you always want to see a good effort. But this year, especially in the first half, a road split is good news.

I'll take it. Nice job guys.

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

I say we chant "We want Greg" on the Blog until he comes back...

I called play-by-play in college and could probably hand SLU's broadcasts... at least it would be listenable.

Some random thoughts from listening.........I can't believe I couldn't make it as other than Yale, Q is the closest to my house, bummer.

As to the broadcast........what a contrast and difference our broadcast was versus Q Pac. Q has Bill Schweitzer a well known sports radio broadcaster who I believe worked with Marty Glickman at CBS Radio and other New York radio stations, doing their hockey broadcasts. We have a guy who doesn't even know our own players by name. Ours was so bad I wound up switching and listening the the Q Pac radio broadcast.

Boy....if you can't score with that many power plays??????? Especially those 5 on 3's!!!

Based on the comments of those in attendance it sure seems like the "D' is going to be a work in progress. One would have to assume that the whole team will mature and get better as the season rolls along.

As to expectations........I'm with Tim. If you told me we could split an away weekend against Q Pac and Princeton I'd have signed up for that result beforehand. My guess would have been the win would have come Saturday as opposed to Friday but all in all a satisfying result for the weekend.

I don't want to be a pessimist but I'm thinking a split next weekend would be a respectable outcome as well. Union had Yale beat until Yale scored with 11 seconds left off a faceoff to tie it and RPI is much improved with a couple of highly touted recruits.

So far the team has exceeded my expectations and as I stated earlier I think we will get better as the year progresses.

One other thing I forgot to mention that I thought was interesting......

Wally said Q Pacs goalie Dan Clarke is the brother of Dale Clarke our outstanding SLU Defenseman of some years back.

Yes, that's true!

Don't get me wrong, Mike and Tim. If you offered me a split for this weekend, I would have gladly accepted. :p

Dale Clarke was an amazing player. It sounds like his brother is really good as well.

As for the weekend, I'll take 2 points on that trip any day of the week. I am very pleased with what the team has accomplished so far.

As for the announcing, perhaps SLU should bring Got 6 or Spaceman out of "retirement," and/or bring in SLUwriter, to do games when Greg is unavailable. I suggest that all-3 give Wally a call and offer their services if they have time to do it.

I just read that about the Clarke boys in our new media guide (there's a 3rd brother Dylan [F-Jr] playing for Plattsburgh State). I thought it was interesting that Joe Marsh spent more than a few moments chatting with Dan after the handshake line... now I know why.

We missed you yesterday Mike... nobody to pick on! :p I didn't have the heart to tease Brandon having just met him for the first time. ;)

Sounds like we deserved a lot of teasing Mark. Brandon can take it....those kids from upstate NY are tough!!!

You guys are off to a great start. Pasted in below the career stats/history of Dale Clarke. He had a cup of coffee with the St. Louis Blues and is now playing in Europe. When my daughter started at SLU he was a Senior and the only thing that kept him from getting more accolades were two other defenseman who were that year or next both named ALL Americans (Justin Harney and Matt Desrosiers).

I may try and take in a Q game next week...particulalry interested in seeing Yale and you guys play Cornell. That will be a good measuring stick. If I wind up going I'll look for you.

Dale Clarke (born March 23, 1978 in Belleville, Ontario) is a Canadian professional ice hockey defenceman. He is currently playing with HIFK of the Finnish SM-liiga. Clarke played three games in the National Hockey League for the St. Louis Blues. He previously played in Finland for Tappara and in Germany's Deutsche Eishockey Liga for the Wolfsburg Grizzly Adams and the Kassel Huskies.

[edit] Playing career
Clarke played junior hockey for the Wellington Dukes of the Metro Toronto Junior Hockey League (MTHL) from 1994 until 1996. He attended St. Lawrence University and played four seasons from 1996 until 2000. In 2000, he signed with the St. Louis Blues and joined the Worcester IceCats in time for the playoffs. He played two seasons for the IceCats and had a three-game call-up to the Blues. In 2002-03 he split time with the AHL Cincinnati Mighty Ducks team before being traded to the Colorado Avalanche organization, joining the Hershey Bears. Since 2003, he has played in Europe for teams in Finland and Germany. As a Canadian playing in Europe, Clarke has played in the annual Spengler Cup tournament for the Canadian team.

I considered pulling a "hoot" on him but decided to save it for those that deserve it! :p

Keep in mind that we don't have Cornell at the Bank until February 5th. This week is Harvard on Friday (televised on NESN) and Dartmouth Saturday. Yale's got the Big Red Friday at Ingall's.

If I wind up going I'll look for you.
Now that I know what you look like I'll keep an eye out for you as well.

BTW, hope you're feeling better... ;)

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

Haven't ventured in here in a while, but I do need to mention a couple of things about this last weekend.
1. Greg couldn't do the games because of his teaching commitments. He will also miss the Harvard-Brown series and perhaps/probably the Yale-Brown set later in the year. He can usually get to the closer road games in time for the Friday start.
2. We tried very hard to find experienced replacements for last weekend to no avail...the two guys who did the games (or tried to) said they had hockey experience, but obviously had not called many games. The Saturday guy was much better at trying to do an accurate play-by-play, but it is very hard to pick up a team's names and numbers in a very short period of time.
3. Play-by-play in hockey is, as Got6 will attest, not as easy as people think it is. I have other commitments during a game and while I can try to help out when someone is struggling, I do have to do the part of my job that is tied in with web coverage and feeding our media outlets when we are on the road.
4. We have lined up a very good play-by-play announcer for the Harvard-Dartmouth series.

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

RE: Elsid

It is very tough, and it's very easy in a fast-paced game like hockey to get overwhelmed quickly, which seemed to be the case this weekend.
What happened to Chris Engel? He was excellent at the IceBreaker tournament. I thought maybe he was going to be your road guy while Greg stayed home.

Take care.

I agree.

It's incredibly easy to rank on play-by-play broadcasters. It's not at all easy to be one. It's an under-appreciated art. I say this having done it for my four years at SLU. I imagine it has probably gotten way tougher over the years as the games have gotten faster. I also imagine the use of numbers 1-99 makes it far more difficult to call a game than the 1-31 + 35 of my day. And the face masks don't help the broadcaster any either.

I, for one, am simply delighted that the web allows me to follow the team from this distance.

Don't look now but with the season one third over, Kyle Flanagan is the only Freshman in the nation ranked in the top 25 point scorers (by PPG).

Here's hoping he can keep it up and keep it up and keep feeding those beauts to Mackenzie.

This should mean good things for our scoring output in the next few years

It is especially tough when you would rather be watching the game. I would love another crack at it when unlike the Miami-Ohio rink (Goggin) where the press box overhangs the ice so you can't see part of the ice well, the player names are not on the jerseys, it is not the first hockey game you have seen in six months, and the players haven't all swapped numbers, and I am not jet lagged from just flying in from London. But assuming I wouldn't get that chance, it is very difficult to say what you see happening and put it in to hockey terms. Dan Rusanowsky was great and so is Greg. The key being even when they have a gap in describing the play, the pull you back in with the score, time left, etc. What would be a blast is color, but that job has been taken by a seasoned veteran. It also takes a special personality to talk non-stop for 2 hours. It is hard to talk when you have nothing to say. Finally, it is really tough to announce the games in this league without pausing every few minutes to say "Gawd, does Kotyra/Dell/Murphy/Murphy/Murphy/Millea/Feola/Hicks/etc./etc. SUCK or what???":D

Bottom line though is that it is a lot harder than it looks! Next time you watch a game, turn off the sound and try to announce it and see how you do. I am glad to have Greg back even if he misses some games. For the games he isn't there, just try to be patient I guess. Afterall, what is important is whether we win or lose, not how the game is announced!;)

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

I see Hughes is doing well so far with 4pts. How has he been defensively?

I would say exceeding expectations / doing well for a freshman. He is an effective skater with good reach. He generally makes good decisions. He has played every game so far so that means he is doing things right. I like what I see so far! Of the true freshmen D, he is clearly the most ready at the moment.

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

Hey guys,

I sat down with Brandon Bollig this week for the latest in the "Get to Know a Saint" series. I wanted to hear what he had to say about Mike McKenzie declaring him the most eligible bachelor and a ladies man. He also talked about his film debut, and yes, you can find him on IMDB.com. Check the blog:

Thanks, G6WM. Hughes comes from an excellent athletic bloodline. I saw him play some in high school in CT but didn't really notice him much until senior year. Back then, he needed more muscle and improved offensive instincts. Some ECAC schools passed on him, but they may well come to regret that. I think the year in juniors must have really served him well. Good luck to him.
