Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

Hey guys,

The weekend preview is posted up on the blog. I also have a story about the number of brothers to play together for St. Lawrence running in tomorrow's newspaper. Anyone have a guess?

http://www.watertowndailytimes.com/section/blogs05

Good question. I only go back as far as1984-85.

Pete and Tim Lappin
Chris and Mike Lappin
Derek and Jared Keller
Paul and Mark Wallman
Mike and Sean Muir

Sean and Kyle Flanagan will play together next season.

Who am I leaving out?

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

Pevs. had a PP goal (5 so far on the PP, 8 overall so far) and 2 assists in the Thrashers 5-3 win over the Rangers tonight. The MSG announcers mentioned SLU 8 times and, while mentioning Pevs.' new contract, said, "that everybody from SLU makes lots of money." I think with the comment about the money that they were teasing Mike Keenan who is part of the MSG Team this year, as well as the current/former MSG Rangers Hockey Producer (who was a SLU Grad.) They also went on to say that, "we hope the Predators don't see the tape of this game."

Pevs. was interviewed between the 2nd and 3rd and attributed his success in Atlanta to more confidence from the coaches and increased ice time from his days in Nashville.

Stemmer (a CCT fan and also a die-hard Rangers fan) will probably have a cow if he reads this, but I actually rooted for the Thrashers tonight. It's really neat to watch a guy I've (and probably all who regularly post on this Thread) actually met do so well at the highest level. Pevs. not only sees time on the PP, but he's on the PK and on ice for many big draws. He is having one hell of a season so far.

Noticed on the FSLH website today that the Men's postgame stuff, when held, is at the Hoot this season. Great choice, but was wondering if the Glass Onion has yet re-opened?

The only ones I can think of are Justin and Jake Harney.

More on Pevs., from the Thrashers' Website (note: his 20 pts. rank him 11th in NHL scoring per that Website):

The Slater Brothers never overlapped but all had great careers: Terry, Pete & Mark

And, Tom MacDonald and John MacDonald from Canton might have overlapped one year but I don't think so as Tom transferred in from Canton ATC.

Well, this was before Joe was there (I think they graduated in '78, a season we went 6-26-0), but I'll add the Popiel brothers, Dick and I think Dan.

That was the season I invited 19 other locals to join me in Troy to watch us play at RPI (only me and my girlfriend then, also a SLU grad., of the 20 were rooting for SLU). SLU led 5-0 at exactly the 10:00 mark of the 2nd, and we lost 9-8 about 7 minutes into the then 10-min. OT period. One of the Popiel brothers grazed the post with a rocket on a perfectly executed 2 on 1 just before RPI scored the GWG. Save the loss to Yale last year in Albany and one other game not worth mentioning again:(, that was the maddest I've ever been after a SLU loss.

So far, most of you are right. I'm not sure if the LeRoys overlapped, but I may have missed them in my count. Remember, they have to have played together... or like the Flanagans... on the roster at the same time. I counted the Flanagans because they'll play next year and should have been there this year (both are on the active roster)

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

OUCH ! Flanagan out? I only heard the third period, but it sounded like the first two were pretty ugly. A few less penalties and the Saints win that game in the end. I think Mr. Tisi has earned himself the right to start a game or two.

Didn't get to hear or see the game on B-2. If anyone who was there has a report please let us know what went on. Looking at Dave's post I certainly hope nothing is seriously wrong with Flanagan. I think we are going to be offensively challnged as it is and losing him for any period of time would certainly hurt.

I took in some local action tonight and went and saw Yale take on Cornell. Yale had a freshman goalie start Maricic and he was shaky at the start giving up two goals on three shots. (One was a PP rebound) but he settled down. It was amazing Cornell was still in the game after the first period. Yale came out flying and at one point the SOG were Yale 22- Cornell 4 but Cornell was leading 2-1.
A real contrast in teams. Cornell is big and physical (what's new) and Yale is going to be a handful this year. I'm not sure "fast" is a speedy enough word to use for them. There was some fierce hitting and some stupid penalties. Riley Nash took a double minor late in the game that was costly to Cornell.
For Yale Little, Arcobello, Backman, Oneill all looked great. For Cornell I was really impressed most with Colin Greening. Nash is very talented but if I had to pick I'd take Greening first. Jillson and Scali also stood out in my eyes. Cornell has some trees on defense including a new freshaman, Birch who goes 6'4".

I picked Yale to finish first and tonight didn't change my opinion. Tomorrow night I'll probably take in Q Pac/Dartmouth. Q handled Harvard pretty well tonight and I saw the highlights on TV. Dale Clarkes brother again played well in net for Q Pac.

I think our Saints will have their hands full tomorrow night. RPI is a much improved team with some very talented freshman. Good Luck Saints tomorrow night.

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

Did not see what happened to Flanagan. He left the game and was out of uniform watching the third from the bench.

All I can say about that game is Union was better than us, especially on special teams. I'd guess we fired about 30 shots directly into their players both on the PP and 5-5. We had three PP chances in the first and some good chances and are not finishing. I just don't see much chemistry. Then, our discipline was atrocious. At one point in time we took 7 straight penalties and we negated a 1:40 5 on 3 by taking a penalty. (The officiating was certainly questionable...certainly did not agree with the hold on Torney - he stood the guy up - and not sure about Bollig holding the stick on the 5 on 3...looked like it was Bollig who had his stick knocked out of his hands). But there were also some good calls that went against us....and Union got two PP goals.

We also gave up a 2-0 on Union's 4th goal I think...that was pretty awful.

The goaltending question is getting more interesting. I can make an argument for or against any of the three. My gut tells me it will be Moss or Tisi tonight though. Also, do you sit guys for taking bad penalties. I am not sure we have enough healthy guys to do that, and the best candidate from last night would be Bollig who also had a key hand in both of our first two goals.

This is not a typical Saint team though. So far the discipline and PK needs a lot of work.

I am going to end with some positive comments - McKenzie's skating is dramatically improved. His speed is noticably improved. Ditto for Bollig. I think Carden can actually be a good player for us...he has flashes of brilliance. Flanagan can really pass the puck. Finally, Hughes is really starting to impress me with his poise....I think he will be good.

Need a win tonight against a good RPI team. I guess RPI saved themselves for league play but a 3-0 start....tonight is a huge early game for us.

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

We were fortunate to get a win last night, it's a tough place to visit. The Saints fought hard till the end and I thought it was going to be another 3rd period disaster. Good luck the rest of the way (except of course on your visit to Schenectady ;)). I've also said it before and will again, Joe Marsh is a class act. If you are interested in his postgame remarks to Ken Schott, here is the link.

Hey, thanks for the link. Congrats to Union for a well-played game.

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

Flanagan is going to be done for a while. He hurt his shoulder pretty bad. I'll get an update on that at practice this week. Great come-from-behind win for the Saints tonight, 2-1, over RPI.

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

Great win tonight. We lose Cunningham to injury and still battled. Huge goal by McKenzie and a great game from Tisi. Just what we needed really all the way around. Officiating was frightening both ways. The penalty on Brutlag in the third was awful but so were some calls against the Saints. Big game for Pitsikoulis. Congrats to the Team on a big win. It was a solid 60 minute effort after a disappointing night last night and a great come from behind after putting a lot of shots on net and probably feeling a bit frustrated!

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

Cunningham hurt now too? Wow. Unfortunately I missed tonight's game, but the box score looks impressive. Great job Saints! I would have predicted the weekend to go the other way around with a win over Union and a loss to RPI.

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

Great game for the Saints! The team played hard all game and fought off a 6 on 4 at the end. Fun to watch.
