Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

Nope. It wasn't a very good season all around, and the weather stank. Too warm, and two days lost to all-day downpours. I did enjoy being in the woods, especially now that my son is old enough to go with us.

That sounds like my photography efforts every season, but being in the woods makes it all worth it. Won't miss the black flies, mosquitoes, etc., though, if I ever walk away from this crazy passion of 26 years. It's nice to shoot in fall/winter when's there's no bugs.

My passion is fading, though, because I absolutely HATE digital despite the countless advantages it affords photographers - in particular during photo shoots. I'd rather shoot with the Nikon FM-2 which was a purely manual film camera (translation: I'm getting old and senile), but most publishers won't look at slides anymore and scanning/converting slides to digital isn't cheap.

No venison for you; no good photos for me. You 'gotta love it.

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

Me, the TL Crew, and Spaceman will be looking forward to seeing Tim and perhaps Dan at the 'Gut. Need to find out from Tim if he has any venison for us??? Am really looking forward to watching some of new guys, or guys who didn't play last year, for the first time (e.g., Child, Flanagan, Hughes).

Nice job by the Saints last night. It looks like we have responded well from the Maine game. This team continues to exceed expectations in my view.

Spent time in the Clarkson RoundTable Chatroom last night. We all kept it respectful and it was fun, especially at the end.:D

GO SAINTS.
PFFTT!

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

On Saturday I will be at the Gut with my brother. Although we are both UVM alums, I will be wearing the Scarlet and Brown.

He says I am a traitor but I, thanks to the good sense of my daughter - SLU '03, prefer to think of myself as a convert!

GO SAINTS!

I have always liked the Vermont program, but next to SLU nothing comes close. The more you know, the better friends you become with people associated with the program, the more you watch them you realize there is something very special about that team. To me, that program captures very precisely what NCAA athletics is all about!!!

An ECAC alum, I bet, also. ;)

It certainly does and then some. I've never regretted for one second being a Saints fan. There's something to be said for doing things the right way, year after year after year. And, yes, I also have great respect for the UVM Program, and for Coaches Gilligan and now Sneddon....and love going to games at the 'Gut. Great, respectful fans and it gets really loud in there.

On another note, I called the SLU Bookstore yesterday and inquired if/when those awesome home jerseys introduced last season might go up for sale. Was advised that they should be available around January and would be added to the website. Can't wait to buy one for me and a few others for my family.

GO SAINTS!

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

:) Got Six, I gather by your post that you watched the game at Cheel and am wondering if you had the same feeling I did as you saw the winning play unfolding. The shot by Hughes, the save, the rebound, the wide open net and Russ Bartletts shot flying over the top of the net? But old Curran didn't let us down. What an asset he's been for the last four years.Russ was also a very good player ,I can't remember if it was his Junior or Senior year that he missed a ton of wideopen nets, just could not bury it.
Also agree with you on Pete Childs and George Hughes, both are keepers.Did you notice that most of their shots are on net, My wife said they remind her of Dale Clark and Justin Harney, when they came in as Freshman.Sure hope they turn out as good. There's a lot of speed on this team,I like that Bogo,Carden and Drewiske line, they all can skate
Now if just one of the goalies would step it up a notch for the second half, this will be a fun team to watch

Pete, you really are a half glass empty guy aren't you!!;) :D I was not thinking that at all. Now if he had missed??? Curran just hit dead center. In fairness to Russ, I don't recall seeing a net that wide open since Pete Stauber came streaking down the slot and knocked the net off in 1988.

Right now Child is way ahead of other guys. Love it when a walk-on becomes a regular. He and Hughes really do seem to have the ability to make smart plays at both ends of the ice and to fire it on net. I am guessing Stratford is struggling a bit too, but I look forward to the day he is in the Clarkson games as he can punish guys with his hitting and toughness.

I hope they keep that line intact of Bogo, Carden and Drewiske....loved the speed and skating ability. That line had some jam. But, I'd be okay if they dropped Drewiske down as a center and moved J. Keller in there too.

You don't get better guys than Vermuelen and Curran. They are two of the most honest, hard-working players of this decade. At Harvard Curran could have been the number one star. He was going into the corner with 2 Harvard guys and coming out with the puck on his stick every single time. Curran is not going to win any skill contests, but he uses what he has so well.

All three of the goalies have been brilliant at times and brutal at times. Petizian had a great game at Harvard and a good game at Clarkson...I think he would want 1 or 2 of the goals back. I feel bad for Moss on Friday...that was a tough game for a goalie. More than anything, I am hoping for good health for the players in the second half. I think we could have an even better record without the injuries / illnesses!

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

It has been nice to see a feisty SLU team this season. I am sure that there were a lot of question marks coming into the season after the departure of so many talented players. Moving into the 1/2 way mark with a record of 8-6-2 (4-3-1) seems to be crowd pleaser thus far.
Even though it would have been nice to collect 4 points last weekend, the Saints played with a lot of passion. It was good to see Hughes, Flanagan, and Cunningham back in the mix. It was also nice to see Drewiske put the puck in the back of the net a few times. Defeating Clarkson on their own home ice in front of their fired-up crowd is always priceless!
Lots of luck to the skating Saints this weekend as they take on former ECAC member UVM. Go Saints, beat the Catamounts!

Holy cow........you finally passed the character test and USCHO let you on here huh???
Welcome Brian....nice to see you and Trish last weekend.

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

Here's the formula for success against UVM:
Brandon Bollig+peace on earth, goodwill, etc.=fewer than 4 PK's
This formula needs peer review, like all formulae, but does have the endorsement of my neighbor, a math teacher at St. Pete HS.

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

Sounded like a disappointing loss, however we still finish the first half of the season with an 8-7-2 record. Sounded like UVM was playing a trap game, which we know doesn't work well with our game (I'm looking at you, Bruno). Hopefully the guys have a good break for a couple weeks now and come back ready for the Denver tournament.

UVM has some really talented guys, Madore was great when he had to be, they put on a decent amount of pressure, and the puck found the net for them. SLU had enough quality scoring chances, and good enough goalie play, to win if the puck bounced their way.

Possibly the two best scoring chances of the game were SLU's - one in the first minute or two off a great pass across the slot for a one-timer that Madore stopped, and one point-blank flurry for McKenzie in the third. I still don't know how he didn't score there. They set Bollig up in the third for two or three good low tips from the edge of the crease that bounced wide. They got some pucks through traffic that Madore got in front of. They hit the crossbar. UVM got more shots to the net (not as many more as the box score says they did), but I still think the game could have gone the other way. UVM's first goal was a shot from the blue line that hit a Saint skate halfway to the goal. The third was obviously an empty-netter. Their second goal was a very nice play. I thought Tisi looked pretty darn good.

This team definitely does not have the firepower of last year's team, and I do remember thinking after the first period that they needed to send more pucks toward the net. They weren't flashy, but they worked hard enough to get some good looks. UVM deserved to win, but the score could be misleading. SLU was right there with them the whole way and on another night might have won that game 2-1.

I agree that 8-7-2 is a good record at this point, and they're only going to get better between now and March.

UVM is always a tough game! Overall, the team has been a pleasant surprise (record is better than I expected). There is nice new talent to complement the seniors and I think they will be tough against divisional foes the rest of the way.

Tim's assessment is right on. The game could have gone either way. It was a fun game to watch in a great place to watch one. UVM has a classy program and tremendous fans - I love watching games there, despite the results the last two visits to the "Gut.

Child and Hughes really impressed, and Tisi played great. Save the RPI aberration last season, I just wish that we could score more when he plays.

No problems whatsoever with the officiating. A couple of calls were missed both ways (e.g., I thought UVM was way offside when they entered our zone about 70 seconds before scoring the 2nd goal, but we couldn't clear it anyways).

We are where we should be so far....a team that works its tails off but isn't going to score much. My only complaint is our propensity to take penalties late.....the last one took away any chance of popping a couple and forcing OT. We need to fix that or we're looking at a .500 season at best.

The trip home today was a bit dicey from Lake George on. But, it wouldn't be a trip to see us play unless the roads were lousy. That's part of the equation IMO. Was great to see everybody, even though Tim left the venison in the woods.:D

GO SAINTS!
