Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

Can't wait to read Got 6's rants on the refereeing. I have to agree :) . Brutal.

You guys are sure riding a wave of momentum into Cheel tomorrow. This one will be a gut-check for St. Lawrence.

Gut check?? It was "gut wrenching" watching a 3-1 lead slip away tonight. Being at the game I probably don't have as much to say about the officiating as those of you who watched it on B-2. It seemed every call was down the other end of the ice or in the far corner where I couldn't really see much of what happened (like the final penalty call on Bollig).

I do know one thing.....deserved or not, brutal or not, we are not going to win many games giving up 3 goals on 6 PP chances. As far as Got6 ranting about the officiating, I don't know if he watched or not but I do know he is down in the Islands somewhere so my guess is he might not have watched.
The one call that was right in front of us was the one on Mobley for interference and it was a shame to take that penalty (but it was interference and in my opinion a valid call).

There were definately some woulda, coulda moments. We just missed scoring a fourth goal into the empty net and a shot near the end went just wide off the outside of the post. And were it not for Drewiske diving to knock the puck away Clarkson very well could have scored in the last 2 seconds.

Pretty tough tie.......we were joking in the car on the way back about the phrase of a "tie is like kissing your sister", but, none of us has a sister so we wouldn't really know!!! :D

A very disappointing night. The phrase of snatching defeat from the jaws of victory comes to mind.

It will be interesting to see the net minding choices tomorrow. Moss honestly wasn't really tested very much, but 3 goals on 17 shots leads me to believe we will see someone else at Cheel. No offense to my Clarkson bretheren but Karpowich did not look very good at all.

My final comment about the tying goal is the whole play as it developed had the exact same feeling and scenario of the awful goal we gave up in Albany to Yale last year when we had the game in the bag.

Very impressed with the talent of Flannagan (he made some beautiful passes on the PP and he really creates opportunities for himself and teammates) and Huges will also be a good one. Some nice rushes and passes to break out.

I'm hoping for better tomorrow night but if we don't win a game where we outshoot them 35-17 I don't want to predict what might happen if that balance flips the other way.

Looks like a wild one at Ingalls???? Yale made a statement tonight!!

Good luck to the Saints tomorrow night.

I have two sisters. Ties are a bummer. However, a point is a point no matter how it is earned and I'll take it.

Special teams are killing us. My previous 20+ win season (if our PK got better) prediction here appears to now be a dream at best.

On to Cheel, where whoever plays goal for us will likely have to stand on his head throughout to give us a chance. Haven't a clue who will be in the nets tonight.

Ordered Bob McKenzie's and Bob Graham's books last night. Will be doing lots of reading soon.

GO SAINTS!

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

Crit, I just thought the officiating was random last night. They called Mobely for interference that was yeah, by the letter of the book interference, but is also something that happens 10 times a game. I was watching the Devils game the other night and watched the same thing happen and the announcers just called it good hockey.

On the other hand, the refs didn't call any stick work whatsoever but they called Beca for a hook in the first that not even the SLU announcers saw. Vermulen's interference call was caused by a defenseman pushing him into the net. Pokuluk got called for a cross check in the middle of a scrum where both teams were very liberal with their equipment.

Then there were the 2 boarding calls. Both deserved a major. Flanagan put the Clarkson player's head into the boards, a clear dangerous play. Then there was Rufenach who basically took a run at the SLU player. I guess they were consistent giving both a minor, but both were dangerous plays.

Tough loss for the Saints last night and Clarkson should be playing with a good head of steam going into tonight. But if I know one thing, a Coach Marsh team will be prepared.

I agree with everything you wrote....however, my gripe with the Interference penalty was in the situation we had "numbers" and while one of our other players was chasing the puck our player could have negated the penalty by using his speed to just beat the player instead of "obstructing" his path to the puck that he really wasn't going to get to first, anyway.

Yes there was a lot of stick work and chopping. And just to edit your post it was a "tie" that felt like a "loss". (We didn't actually lose!!! ;)

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

I saw the whole thing...except B2 didn't fully cooperate for me in the 3rd. I am not going to blame the officiating. They gave us a PP in OT. It was inconsistent as always and I actually think there were three plays where guys could have gotten injured....two of which Fireknight referred to. It is just so inconsistent though. You get Flanagan tripped in the first few minutes. I counted three minors on Clarkson before the first penalty was called (on SLU, of course). Officiating aside and I agree it was brutal and up to the ECAC standards of total inconsistency from game to game, period to period and shift to shift (Stewart is officially an idiot if he thinks they guys are good)!!

On to the game. McKenzie had a good game. He did that toe drag that helped tie the game at UNH two years ago that we won!! He had some nice plays and shots. Flanagan and Hughes are future stars!! BUT, here is the vomitous fact....8 PP goals against on 14 penalties against in the last two games. That is atrocious. That is not going to win games. Anytime a team is scoring 50% or better on their PP chances, you are in deep ****!!! The last goal.....what can you say? Great goal by Clarkson....flash speed and nice move...brutal defense by SLU.

I thought Moss looked okay. I personally would go back with him but I am guessing it will be Petizian!! That is a tough game to be a goalie in!!

That tie felt a lot like Albany didn't it? You just got to play better defense than that and stay the hell out of the box. I mean, if you can't kill, then you GOT to stay out of the box!! Right now, we are not doing either. We also had a ton of chances that we did not bury and finally our PP looks not very good I thought Child and Hughes both had good games. Last comment, I agree with the SLU commentators about Beca....he was way out of control at times and was using his stick liberally. I'd love to see a better result tonight but I am not expecting it. You can't fix your PP and PK overnight...or sometimes in an entire season and right now they are the issue! Evidently you can't fix officiating over 25 years!!:D

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

Well, we take 3 of 4 points against Clarkson when it matters, and it ends 1-1-1 for the season series. Hughes with a huge weekend (1 G, 3 A), Drewiske with 2 big goals tonight, and Petizian getting a win tonight after last weekends massacre. On to UVM next weekend and then holiday break until out at Denver.

The powerplay went 2-5 tonight, while the PK went 1-3. A little better on both ends tonight, but still some improvement needed I'm sure.

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

Last night I got home late in the third period and heard the end of the debacle. Tonight I was home all evening. I lost track of time playing games with my son for a while, and then I decided the best strategy would be to not watch or listen to a single second of the game.

You're welcome.

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

Reserved seat ticket at Cheel......... $13.00
New St. Lawrence hockey jacket ......... $79.99
Watching the Saints beat Clarkson...... Priceless !!!
:)

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

And, now that all scores have been reported, at the end of the fall semester (with Union/RPI this upcoming week), SLU is sitting T-5 with 9 points in 8 games. Given some of the road trips we had, and the layout of the team from last year, I'd say that's pretty darn good.

Edit: Continuing the awesome night in SLU land, Pevs scored the game-winning shootout goal against Florida tonight for a 2-1 Thrashers win.

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

You're welcome.

Well thanks!!!!

An altogether, much more pleasant ending to tonights game than last night!!!! The Margarita's at the Cactus Grill Cantina tasted much sweeter tonight!!!

Certainly a big win in a difficult place to play. Of course our seats were right next to the Clarkson student section so we had to tolerate that as best as we could.....Bushy got pelted with a water bottle and soda at the end from the student section as I guess our celebration was a bit too exuberant.

A big game/weekend from Drewiske!!!! Two goals plus that late dive to poke the puck away at the end of the game last night. Tonight was a much closer game in terms of the evenness of play. Not a lot of shots on goal for either squad.

A nice comeback win too!!! Carden quietly had two assists, Hughes gets a couple of points and his shots on goal from the point more often than not are testers and on net which is so important and low.... which is even better. One of them won the game as Karpowich went down to block it and the easy rebound came to Curran for the game winner. We also did a much better job of staying out of the box. Only 3 penalties tonight.

It's nice to win when your first line basically was shut off the scoreboard which bodes well for the second half.

Way to go Saints!!!!!!!!!!

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

All the interviews and highlights are up on the blog.
I'm traveling with the team to Vermont next weekend and will be providing updates and whatnot from there.

Dan,

Enjoy the Gutterson experience, I've been told it's a heck of a place to see a game. I'm not sure if their students are still in session next weekend or not, but hopefully they are so it will be rocking.

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

A much better result for the Saints. Still not enamored with the officiating. SLU got away with a few on Saturday, but I felt like Clarkson got the better of that ugliness on Friday. There were a couple of calls last night that I am actually shocked were not called. Overall, it is a better game to watch as they didn't disrupt flow. The one that I really can't believe is that no interference was called on Clarkson as McKenzie (I think) skated up the right wing boards and the D-Man through a check with no one near the puck. Didn't see the penalty that gave us the PP at the end so can't comment. And, I will never apologize for Wally and Greg again....man those Clarkson kids were homers and not very tuned in (talking about how we will see a lot of D. Keller to come...even though he is a senior)!! Greg is way more even in his analysis and stomps on the refs both of which I personally appreciate!:D

Drewiske is playing great. I LOVE that line of Carden, Bogo and Drewiske. All three are fast and good skaters. Actually, liked the lines all weekend. Also love that fact that a straight walk-on Freshmen played both games (Dyer). Hughes is a player I have really started to like. He just makes smart plays and moves and seems to have good instincts. At times he reminds me of both Misko and Lapperriere although I won't ask him to fill either pair of those skates just yet. Child also had a very good weekend.

Most impressive point of the week goes to Jared Keller who WCKN showed with an assist from the stands. That is bad news. He is really a key guy and I think he may have gotten a conconcussion on that elbow to the face / interference (non-call) against Maine. Those refs sucked worse than either set this weekend.

SLU was better on the PP, better on the PK and while I think both goalies let at least one by them last night they would want back, in the end no one was going to stop Curran

Huge win for the boys in a couple of ways. We needed the points. We needed some confidence after two stinkers in a row. A win at Cheel is always sweet!

Gutterson is okay. I personally like Dartmouth so much more and miss that road trip pairing. UVM is fast. We will have to skate on Saturday to try to knock them off at the Gut!

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

Great win SLU !! Just wanted to pop in and say that you guys are surprising moi. After losing like eight seniors last year(one of your best recruiting classes ever ) I thought you'd be "toast" this year. Boy was I obviously wrong. Good luck second half...but beat Vermont first !!! Merry Christmas !

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

Good stuff Dan.

I'll look for you at UVM.

Me, the TL Crew, and Spaceman will be looking forward to seeing Tim and perhaps Dan at the 'Gut. Need to find out from Tim if he has any venison for us??? Am really looking forward to watching some of new guys, or guys who didn't play last year, for the first time (e.g., Child, Flanagan, Hughes).

Nice job by the Saints last night. It looks like we have responded well from the Maine game. This team continues to exceed expectations in my view.

Spent time in the Clarkson RoundTable Chatroom last night. We all kept it respectful and it was fun, especially at the end.:D

GO SAINTS.

Re: SLU 2009-2010 Season

Nope. It wasn't a very good season all around, and the weather stank. Too warm, and two days lost to all-day downpours. I did enjoy being in the woods, especially now that my son is old enough to go with us.

Muzzleloader season started today - I don't go, and of course I woke up this morning to about 3 inches of fresh snow. One of these years I'm going to give up on the regular rifle season and buy a muzzleloader - it seems like you just can't count on the cold weather, snow, and the rut until December anymore.

ANYWAY . . . I'm looking forward to seeing everyone in Burlington next weekend. UVM will be a tough matchup. And I've gotta say, last night was a very good win. Not every team could respond to the ***-whupping in Maine and the disappointing tie in Canton by heading to Cheel and grabbing a win on what is Clarkson's biggest home date of the year.
