Sioux vs Gophers - Sioux invade the John...

Re: Sioux vs Gophers - Sioux invade the John...

UND's all-time biggest rivalry is without question Minnesota. I would guess that the majority of Sioux fans would say the same. As for Minnesota's opinion of their biggest all-time rival, I'd have to imagine it would be split between UND and Wisconsin.

As far as current rivalry, for me, the biggest is still Minnesota. Sorry, but nothing is more satisfying than beating the Gophers. Personally I believe UND/UM is head and shoulders above UND/DU in terms of intensity, and even recent memorable games.

That's your opinion. The last "memorable" game against Minnesota was the 2007 West Regional Final. Since then, we've had several races with Denver for the MacNaughton, a couple meetings in the Final Five, including last year's 2OT thriller, and an NCAA Regional Final. On top of that, we had the 2003 WCHA First Round, which was epic, and the 2004 Regional Final and 2005 Title Game. Throw in the Robbie Bina incident, Jesse Martin incident, Gwozdecky dancing on the dash boards, and running out to center ice, and I think the DU-UND rivalry is bigger than UM-UND. FWIW, I don't think the majority of Sioux fans agree with me, but I do think many of the diehards feel the same way that I do.

Historically, I would argue that UM-UND is the biggest. One of the two teams has been at the top of college hockey since forever, and more often than not it is both. Denver basically sucked for 35 years.

True, I will miss all the inbred and toothless Sue fans making their way down to the big city to spend their hard earned meth cash.

You say this with a straight face? Too funny, your whole NoDak world(not you personally I guess) revolves around playing the Gophers. Fact

I'll miss clueless Minnesota fans cheering on Duluth thinking they are the Gophers. :p:D:D

Well, for those that do manage to graduate, it says University of Minnesota on their diplomas, so we can cheer for them. Besides, we know they're not Sue or Skunks so that's the most important thing. :p

Re: Sioux vs Gophers - Sioux invade the John...

I cheer for the Gophers first, then any Minnesota team second. Minnesota Hockey roots run deep.

That's certainly understandable. However, I was referring to Minnesota fans who cheered on Duluth and thought that they were the Gophers. It was pretty funny.

Re: Sioux vs Gophers - Sioux invade the John...

Yeah I read it, surprised you feel that way about the rivalry.

It's not that I don't care about this rivalry. It's really more of a 1, 1a type situation, but I get more excited about UND-DU, and I feel better after UND victories over Denver than when we beat Minnesota. I'll put it this way, I cheer for Minnesota when they play Denver. Well, "cheer" may not be the appropriate word, but I would rather see Minnesota win than Denver.

Fair enough, you must not be a "pure" North Dakotan. :p

Remember when Ballard pulled the jersey over the Sue player's head (Lundbohm (sp) I think) can't find the video of that, but it was great. Someone once had a .gif of that floating around the interwebs.

Born and raised in Minot, ND, went to Bel Air Elementary School, then went to Erik Ramstad Middle School, and then graduated from Minot High School. I then went to the University of North Dakota and lived in Grand Forks for three and a half years before graduating. My paternal grandfather, father and oldest brother all graduated from the University of North Dakota. I'm really not sure how much more "pure" I could be. ;)

Could it have anything to do with the fact that you live in Colorado?

You can call me a liar all you would like, but it's true.

I think you're just a little ahead of your time. I would expect DU-UND rivalry to grow once the conference splits up. Don't worry, eventually the rest of Sue's nation may catch up.
