Sioux vs Gophers - Sioux invade the John...

Re: Sioux vs Gophers - Sioux invade the John...

While Mankato fans do finish in hockey knowledge in the same position among WCHA fanbases as where their team will finish the WCHA standings this year, I think there's nothing wrong with Sieving after an empty net goal. How many times does a team pull their goalie and get scored on an empty netter when their squad hasn't given up a goal to that point? The goalie gave up a goal, probably several, to put their team in a position to lose. A sieve is a sieve whether in between the pipes or sitting on the bench watching his empty net get scored on (just ask DU after Friday night)

I'm with Dubbs on this one. The goalie is the sieve between the puck and the net. When the goalie isn't there, there is nothing so it's no longer a sieve, it's just a hole or gap. I was so confused when I heard this chant at KC for the first time. I asked a few badger fans I know of as to why and no one could give a good answer. It was just what they do.

Ok, now that all the pleasantries are out of the way, what do people see as the keys to the game(s) for both the Gophers and the Sioux?

For the Sioux:

1) Consistent backcheck from their forwards. Far too many odd-man rushes by the opponent thus far.
2) Much stronger play from Dell, who has let in too many soft goals this year.
3) More offense from the second line who only managed 7 of UND's 70 total shots last weekend.

Re: Sioux vs Gophers - Sioux invade the John...

I understand what you're saying, but here is my point. If you are going to do the chant after every goal, then it makes absolutely no sense to do it after an empty net goal. If you only do it when a goalie gets pulled, for instance, and then happen to do it after an empty net goal to ice the game, then it would be more understandable.

But doing it after each and every goal, and then continuing to do it even after the goalie has been pulled and a goal is scored, makes zero sense to me.

Ummm... if you do it after EVERY goal then by definition you'd HAVE to do it after an empty netter. What gets me is those greedy ******** chant "We want more" after every goal. Unappreciative *****s. They could be up 10-0 with 2 minutes to go and they chant "We want more." Seriously, who's that unsatisfactory and demanding? I want them to just once chant, "Thank you, you've done a wonderful job, we'll stop *****ing now." Unfortunately that doesn't flow as well in a chant.

That's why you do what I do and sieve the goalie on the bench.

To sieve the empty net or the goalie on the bench. Ahh... an age-old question, but one I feel that has no wrong answer. Why not get creative, and do both?

You made your point. How is continuing to harp on the issue after I said we're trying to move the discussion back to hockey not equally as annoying?

Nobody but you seems to wanna talk hockey. Its Sioux-Gopher week, geez, Scoobs, 444, Slap Shot, have you guys taught your n00bs nothing?

I think I get what you're saying, he's not acting like a sieve in that setting, so why does he get called a sieve. But, he's also just a sieve in general. Take for example, when Red Light Robby is between the types, he's a sieve TO THAT GOAL. But he is still a sieve overall, whether he's in the paint, on the bench or on Jupiter.

Oh, I totally see what you're saying. I just think it's an overuse of the chant to do it after empty netters if you're going to do it after each and every goal. It makes it look like the fans don't actually understand the meaning of the term at worst, and at best it makes it less impactful when it is used. Just personal preference I guess :)

But if people insist upon chanting it after an empty netter, at least point at the goalie on the bench and not the empty net ;)

I would agree on all accounts.

For The Gophs

1) Get off to a fast start, this series will be intense, keep the momentum
2) Back checking has been suspect in games, minimize the Sue ZT
3) Keep your cool, stay out of the sin bin

Absolutely agree. Scoring first is going to be HUGE!

Hockey talk on Wednesday... Bah!

With that said, I feel the key for Susie this weekend will be to keep Rocco from wetting himself from all the perceived debauchery going on around him.

No debauchery happens at the Mooch. But I understand why they left him at home when they went to Madison.
