Sioux vs Gophers - Sioux invade the John...

OK So Mariucci and JDUBB disagree on whether Herb told God to go to UND. But the bible of college hockey authority, SS.com, has said it is so time and time again--and that JP threatened to throw all his old North Star Jerseys in the Mississippi if Zach didn't take Herb's advice.

You may choose to disbelieve, but you shall regret it when that day comes when God himself is handing out penalites.

Both Zach and Herb denied that. And those who knew Herb said that he told Zach to go where he felt he would have the best chance to succeed.

Read the book.

Re: Sioux vs Gophers - Sioux invade the John...

This season, Minnesota hockey icon Herb Brooks was quoted in the Grand Forks (N.D.) Herald as saying he told Parise to attend North Dakota because it had the best coaching and tradition. The backlash: "It was like I threw something at the pope," Brooks told the Minneapolis Star-Tribune.

Brooks has denied the story, as has Parise.

"It was my choice," Parise said. "I did what I wanted to do. There was no outside influences or anything."

Not many college hockey fan bases bigger IMO. There is a reason they have the most games televised in college hockey. I would say the Sue fan base is close to, if not as big though.
Why do you repeatedly try to turn threads into a "which fanbase is bigger" contest? Who cares? The Gopher fanbase is not nearly as loyal as the Sioux fanbase is, and anybody that has eyeballs and has been to Mariucci and Xcel for the Final Five can tell you that.

The excuses may be valid (North Dakota has no pro sports teams, Gophers haven't been good past few years), but that's all they are. Excuses. Gopher fans come out of the woodwork when the team is good, but when the team sucks no one follows them. Quit acting like the Gopher hockey fans are the best in college hockey. They aren't even close.

I didn't turn it into that. I responded to someone who said the, and I quote, "The actual Gopher HOCKEY fan base isn't as big as some think". I disagree with that. Do I not have the right to express that disagreement?

Maybe he says that because of posts like the one you just typed. Not sure how old you are but I sure as heck remember the days when UND fans weren't near what they are currently and games were never sold out... So who's fanbase is more loyal? You can try and sell that tp someone thats only recently started watching college hockey but im not buying that load of crap..
pfffft weak sauce

Not to mention, I whole-heartedly disagree on the loyalty issue too. How old are you? I CLEARLY remember a time when the Sioux were struggling to fill their arena half way and the Gophers were selling out nightly.

And if the Gophers improve the product on the ice and the Sioux struggle for an extended period, it will go back to being that way.

So please, save the Sue fans are inherently more loyal bull crap for someone who doesn't know better.

Re: Sioux vs Gophers - Sioux invade the John...

I have to call shannanigans on this..

Been going to Goph games my entire life (42) and until recently its been a sellout crowd for all those years.. From the northern corners to the southern corners the games have been watched (very large television market for hockey), most of the kids dream of playing for the Gophs (not all) and it easily has the most history... Football, basketball etc at the U is not on the same level nor close to the level of popularity in MN.. Growing up in SSP with the likes of the Woogers, McAlpines, Millers, Housleys etc and everywhere you look you see Maroon and Gold throughout the State, I highly doubt that has anything to do with the football team... The fans have been lulled to sleep, but they're there... To think the Gophs dont have a large fanbase is kind of funny actually.. I'd argue they have one of the largest.. Theres a reason the Gophs brought so much money to the WCHA (television market)
Obviously the Gophers have a large fan base, I didn't mean to discredit that, but they are a huge university, and usually large universities will have large fan bases. They have the biggest TV Market because they're the biggest team in the State of Hockey. They've been around the longest, have the most tradition, etc. Everyone has access to the Gophers, as people in Minnesota will watch hockey, regardless. I know I watch the Gophers if the Mavs are on the road, and I follow them and the Sioux on my computer.

Of course it's not just the cost, it's also:the team sucks, there are other things to do, it's raining out, my back hurts, I had to mow the lawn, I had to take my wife to the airport, I lost my tickets, I was attacked by a bear, I got locked out of my house, my cellphone fell in the toilet, I was reading a book, that was today?, I had to vacuum, the gutters needed cleaning, I'm re-roofing my house, my socks needed organizing, I wanted to watch a movie. The reasons are endless! :)

I thought you swore not to post on this site anymore.

I agree with much of this.

Whoa!;)

Also part of how I see Gopher fans, On years when Minnesota isn't in the Final Five, how many Gopher Hockey fans do you find attending those games just to appreciate the conference hockey? Not very many. This has led me to the thought that many Gopher fans are more so Gopher fans, rather than Gopher Hockey fans. They watch the teams they have at the U when they're good, and tune them out when they're not.

It's different here, as most of us will still watch hockey because we have that obsession to the game. What about the people who fill the stands regularly? Do they truly care about hockey that much, or is the team's success on the ice the predictor of whether or not they watch?

And if the Gophers improve the product on the ice and the Sioux struggle for an extended period, it will go back to being that way.

Who has a bigger fanbase? You were the one that brought it up. When the Gophers success goes away, so do their fans. We aren't talking about 15 years ago. We are talking about now. I'm glad the Gophers are 7-1 and have people paying attention to them, but if they happen to falter a bit, I am sure the Gopher fans will go back into hiding.

You apparently do given the post that followed this question.
The Gopher fanbase is not nearly as loyal as the Sioux fanbase is, and anybody that has eyeballs and has been to Mariucci and Xcel for the Final Five can tell you that.
So what exactly are you basing this claim on - fan (mis)behavior or non-attendance? In the first case, any large fanbase (including UND's) has plenty of dip****s in it (we've all seen that screen shot of a guy flicking off the Michigan player in last spring's F4). In the second case, UND almost certainly endured a period of **** attendance in the early to mid '90s (which was the last time they had a prolonged period of crappy teams). The point? Every program has its down periods which correspond to lackluster fan support.
The excuses may be valid (North Dakota has no pro sports teams, Gophers haven't been good past few years), but that's all they are. Excuses. Gopher fans come out of the woodwork when the team is good, but when the team sucks no one follows them.
It's quite humorous reading such an idiotic claim here. Some of the Gopher fans posting on here have loyally followed the program for 40 years or more. I'm not that old, and I'm approaching 25 years as an active Gopher fan (no small feat since I'm not originally from the twin cities). The simple fact of the matter is every team has a smaller core group of diehards that will pay attention throughout the season year after year no matter how bad the team is and a much larger group of hangers-on that are only lukewarm about it and will do or watch something else when the program falls on hard times. The challenges regarding attendance are numerous here and have been covered many times in the past. I won't waste time dealing with them again, but I will mention the ones that matter to me personally and explain why I don't attend the games anymore at Mariucci. It really boils down to the fact that the experience is not worth the cost. A ticket + parking will run about $50 per game. Given the fact the atmosphere there typically is terrible (due to a number of factors), I just don't view it as worth my money, particularly when I can see the game on a 60" HD screen with surround sound at home for nothing.

But by all means, please continue with your nonsensical judgment of another group of hockey fans. If REA was run identically to Mariucci, you probably wouldn't want to attend games there, either. :p

So you (and a couple others) are picking the last couple years to define the fanbase, can I do the same with UND? Can I pick a couple years and use that to define UND's fanbase? You and thse others weren't singing this tune a couple years ago right...

Anyone who thinks the Gopher HOCKEY fanbase isn't big has lost their marbles or just wants to believe that.. I actually feel a little dumber for having read that.. Its a sleeping giant right now. I cant believe im reading that from a conference foe (Mavs), when the Gophs typically (prior to the past couple seasons) had one of the largest traveling fanbases, one that filled your Mavs stands, UMD etc

No, I didn't bring it up. Go back and read thru the thread. Speaking of learning to read, go back and re-read my response to this exact point you already tried to make.

Your fan base is hardly immune to the exact things you are accusing our fan base of being. It isn't opinion, it is fact. Why? Because it has happened.

What makes this post and the post questioning the size of the fanbase a laugh is these would have been the 2 dumbest posts or suggestions ever made on this or any college board EVER only a short couple seasons ago...

Not only was the Mooch and the barn packed since I was a kid (im 42), nevermind the largest television viewership, almost every Goph road conference game had a large # of Gopher fans in attendance.

Not sure what the hell MavHockey is talking about. I have seen plenty of Gopher shirts/hoodies/hats/etc. at the last couple of F5's.
