I cannot respect the Packer stuff on any level.

And seriously, do you really think that the average Wisconsinite has some latent (or open) hatred for Minnesotans? It's just the teams.

We hate people from Illinois along with their teams.

Well I think thats a funny question with no real way to answer it.. How about this, over the internet during the age of communication a very loud YUP, during a Packer/Vikes game -YUP, during a Gopher/Badger game Yup.. In person and away from all that, nah most of the time they'll have a few beers together not knowing the details.. I lived in Milwaukee for a couple years and enjoyed it..

All of my college room mates and half of my college team mates (bar league) were from Minnesota and we all got on great.

When it came to sports, we were at each other's throats.

Sorry I misread you as a poster... Ditto on what you just said..

And btw, I think its pretty awesome to see the Badgers lean alot more on local talent, I was talking to Dubbs about that the other day.. It does wonders for the local youth hockey and the sport in general.. Nothing wrong with the Nucks, Im just kinda old school when it comes to in state recruiting, I believe in the vision they had for the sport.

Re: Sioux vs Gophers - Sioux invade the John...

-Have you perhaps contacted Nanne, Sonmore or Gilmore yet to ask them if I was correct in saying that the Gopher Hockey program was the driving force of what Hockey in MN is today? I guarantee that if you brushed up on your MN hockey history you'd find that to be true.
Those guys are tens or jacks--queens at best. The Ace of Spades, Herb Brooks, advised the jewel of Minnesota hockey, Zach Parise, to go to a real college hockey program, which he did. Not to say UMinn doesn't have a pretty decent hockey program. Not up there with UMD maybe, but good.

IMO, that is where the disconnect is between our fan base and others. I don't think people realize we value in-state recruiting as much as we do because we were taught that this is what fueled Minnesota youth hockey and is what made Minnesota Hockey what it is today.

If anyone (Gopher fan or not) hasn't had the chance to read that book, I would suggest doing so. It isn't a "Gophers" book. In fact, it discusses the falling out Herb had with the program later in his life. It does, however, discuss what a monumental role Herb Brooks had on hockey in not only Minnesota, but this country in general.

No he didn't. He told him to go where he thought he had the best chance to succeed, and left that for Zach to decide. You need to brush up on your history pal. Start with the book I mentioned.

Silly people with simple minds.. Do you know "why" he told Parise to go to UND (and btw miss out on the 02-03' NCAA's)? This has nothing to do with the program Brooks loved and cherished (The UofM)... Had nothing to do with UND or UMD... He did that for 1 very simple reason and he was never officially quoted on it, theres only 2 people on this planet that could (Parise and Patti Brooks). The reason is speculated to be because of his close friendship with John Gilmore. You would have to do your homework to know more, thats all im tellin ya...

I'm not so sure I believe that one. It has been pretty vicious in my experience.

He never really told him to go to UND though. He told him to go where he [Zach] felt he had the best chance to succeed. Brooks had no loyalties to UND and did not try and convince Zach to go there like many UND fans claim.

You're right though, the reason he didn't try to sell him on the Gophers though was because of his friendship with John Gilbert and what the U of M did to him.

FWIW, North Dakota made the 2002-2003 NCAA Tournament.

Re: Sioux vs Gophers - Sioux invade the John...

So North Dakotans count on their fingers and toes, minnesotans need their state spelled for them on a giant screen. Hello kettle.

One of my favorite (sort of) experiences at Mariucci was after a Minnesota goal, and the scoreboard got stuck on the "N" in Minnesota during that portion of the chant. The e-s-o-t-a portion of the chant was almost non-existent. It would have been even more hilarious if we had not just been scored on. :p:D:D

Re: Sioux vs Gophers - Sioux invade the John...

The actual Gopher HOCKEY fan base isn't as big as some think, IMO. There are a lot of those fans that are just 'Gopher Fans' in general, thus they cheer for the hockey team, because they cheer for all U of M sports.

But, growing up in MN, playing high school hockey here, etc, minnesota people know and love their hockey. Maybe not necessarily Gopher hockey, but they love hockey.

This thread has taken an interesting turn.:p

The reason Susie can fill the stands during this economic downturn is three simple words.

Meth. lab. profits.
Wow! That has to be one of the stupidest things written on the board. There is probably more meth labs in MN than there is in North Dakota. I would imagine you haven't studied criminology.

Speaking of that chant, I love how you guys are starting to copy us. What's with the... D-A-K-O-T-A, Dakota, Dakota, goooooo Sue! ?

Not many college hockey fan bases bigger IMO. There is a reason they have the most games televised in college hockey. I would say the Sue fan base is close to, if not as big though.

I have to call shannanigans on this..

Been going to Goph games my entire life (42) and until recently its been a sellout crowd for all those years.. From the northern corners to the southern corners the games have been watched (very large television market for hockey), most of the kids dream of playing for the Gophs (not all) and it easily has the most history... Football, basketball etc at the U is not on the same level nor close to the level of popularity in MN.. Growing up in SSP with the likes of the Woogers, McAlpines, Millers, Housleys etc and everywhere you look you see Maroon and Gold throughout the State, I highly doubt that has anything to do with the football team... The fans have been lulled to sleep, but they're there... To think the Gophs dont have a large fanbase is kind of funny actually.. I'd argue they have one of the largest.. Theres a reason the Gophs brought so much money to the WCHA (television market)

OK So Mariucci and JDUBB disagree on whether Herb told God to go to UND. But the bible of college hockey authority, SS.com, has said it is so time and time again--and that JP threatened to throw all his old North Star Jerseys in the Mississippi if Zach didn't take Herb's advice.

You may choose to disbelieve, but you shall regret it when that day comes when God himself is handing out penalites.
