Sioux vs Gophers - Sioux invade the John...

Re: Sioux vs Gophers - Sioux invade the John...

Hey all GPLers, Take a look at Big Papa's two posts in this thread. Tell me he isn't the sue equivalent of "sec 16 row 16 seat 16 17" over on GPL. Conversations/arguments are flowing and then they come along and just make random, short posts that don't really pertain to the topic at hand. Only difference is Big Papa seems to understand the use of capitalization and punctuation. :p:D

LOL! Great comparison!

And I can smell a Winner!

UND scalps 'em!
Can't keep a great program down.

Re: Sioux vs Gophers - Sioux invade the John...

Dude, I watched both games this weekend. Plenty of seats that were empty all game. There is a difference between tickets sold and tickets used. The Gophers have had paid attendances higher then what could have possibly been actual attendances this year. So has Wisconsin. No way they had 9,000 people in the Kohl Center either Friday or Saturday this weekend.
No doubt. On the other hand, the UND-SCSU games were sellouts, according to USCHO's records (whether anyone showed up or not) and Minnesota's weren't. I was just responding to your comment about UND not "selling out" it's games.

Re: Sioux vs Gophers - Sioux invade the John...

More interesting, from info I have, one of the biggest reasons Michigan was able to rack up so many NCAA NC in the fifties was they gave out hockey scholarships, and most, if not all, others did not. If you run into any info along those lines, I would appreciate it. like other early college hockey info, it is hard to come by.

I can't say I have come across too much in regards of scholarships. If I come across anything, I will let you know. As you said, anything from the early history of college hockey is difficult to come by, and there generally was not discussions about scholarships. Your best bet is to dig into the financials of athletic departments from that time period and try to deduce which programs were using scholarships and who was not. It's also important to note that several hockey players were multi-sport athletes and perhaps received a scholarship for a different sport than hockey. Also, the GI Bill probably played a large role in this era following WWII and the Korean War. My guess would be that a large % of players in this time period were getting assistance from one place or another. I haven't done the research though to get a conclusive answer.

Gophs for the 1st time since I can remember has had issues the past couple seasons (im 42) and we've had season tickets in the fam since before I came to be.. Its been a shame seeing it like this. Hopefully it changes QUICK.. With that said i've seen a couple other clubs going thru the same recently, both UND and the Badgers.. I remember days when you could go to any Badger game you wanted regardless who they were playing. Not to many seasons like that for the Sioux or the Gophs...

Got it. To which I will respond, the Gophers have missed the NCAA tournament the past three seasons. Are you suggesting that, should I go back and look at the Sue's playoff drought of the mid-to-late 90's, I would still see consistent sellouts? And don't use the canned "crappy arena" response. The Gophers sold out the old John consistently in the 1980's.

Fact remains, you're no more immune to empty seats than we are. Rising prices, bad economy, and crappy product will do that to any program.

why does minnesota have this problem with their larger fanbase and smaller arena?

The old REA wasn't crappy, nor for that matter was old Williams Arena, a place I always enjoyed going for a game.

I'm sure UND had attendance issues in the mid-90's, although I was long gone from Grand Forks by that time. No program is immune to attendance issues.

I wasn't making any accusations against Minnesota fans or their support of their team. You had simply posted a message reprimanding a UND fan about making comments on Minnesota's attendance when UND wasn't selling out it's own arena, pointing to the SCSU series as an example. I just wanted to clarify for you that regardless of the number of actual butts in the seats, UND still had technically "sold out" the arena, at least according to USCHO (who I do not vouch for).

Agreed. I can't speak for the Old Engelstad during the early-to-mid 1990s (remember, the Sioux did win the National Title in '97 and arguably should have in '98 and '99), but even the new Ralph has had a few weekends where there has been fewer than 11k in attendance. Of course nothing was as bad as This Game. :p:D:D

At the end of the day, if you lose for an extended period of time, there will be the natural dip in attendance. If Minnesota continues their strong play, I am sure that by February and March their stadium will be full.

I was referring to the period of NCAA absence the Sue had in the early to mid 90's. Before their titles :)

There are other things to do in town, which is not true of GF.

That and the large percentage of tickets owned by businesses that don't necessarily have someone attending every game. Also, what's the price of a ticket at REA for the Sue? Gophers tix are $35 a seat for every game all year (other than the Mariucci Classic 2 games/day). That's $35 a seat whether we're playing UND or British Columbia.

I love when you guys say this and then turn around proclaim yourselves the epicenter of all things hockey in the U.S.

What could possibly be going on that would supplant a Gopher hockey game?

High school hockey, right?

With so many hockey families in the area, I would think that there would still be 10k or whatever the Mooch holds that would want to go. This in addition to those choosing the local squirt game or whatever you guys will say people do for their hockey fix instead of going to Gopher games.

Okay, back to lurking. You guys sure know how to do a series thread!
